BitePal vs Lose It!
For reliable calorie and macro tracking with a larger, more established food database, Lose It! is the better choice, despite its recent paywall changes; BitePal struggles with accuracy and significant billing issues.
Lose It! is a highly-rated, long-standing calorie tracking app praised for its extensive food database and ease of use, though recent changes have moved key features behind a paywall. BitePal offers a gamified experience with AI scanning, but users frequently report inaccurate calorie counts, app glitches, and serious unauthorized billing problems.
Head to head
Pick BitePal if you prioritize a gamified, fun calorie tracking experience with a virtual pet and are willing to manually correct AI inaccuracies, and if you are confident in managing subscriptions to avoid reported billing issues R2R8.
Pick Lose It! if you need a robust, established calorie tracking app with a large food database and generally reliable tracking, and are prepared to pay for a premium subscription to access key features like barcode scanning and avoid frequent ads .
Evidence note: BitePal's reviews are heavily skewed by severe negative feedback regarding unauthorized charges and poor customer support, which significantly impacts its overall standing despite some positive experiences with its core functionality. Lose It!'s negative reviews largely focus on recent feature paywalls and aggressive ads, rather than fundamental app failures or billing scams.

- [R2] BitePal Love<3: I live this app so much I was 187 lb now I’m 154.8 still going but if it wasn’t for this app I wouldn’t be where I am now 🙏🙏🙏
- [R3] BitePal Not quite what I expected: Honestly, I would’ve been better off just staying with a free version. I’ve seen so many reviews and videos on this and thought it was the way to go. Thinking that this is an AI app I figured it would be over the top with help figuring all the nutrition for foods and boy was I wrong. Unless you’re actually scanning the label which is a nice option you’re not gonna get ac
- [R8] BitePal Just started, seems great: I’m on day 2. The raccoon does start harassing to leave a review the moment I downloaded the app. It’s gotten some of the food ai tracking stuff wrong, but it lets you go in and correct the information as needed. It’s better if I take a picture of the nutrition label. I think it’s been fun and I’m looking forward to using it more.
- [R9] BitePal Limited Options and AI Has Errors: This app is okay, and I’m going to give it a shot for four weeks. I’m on day 5. The frustration I have with it is the limited options for tracking nutrition outside of macros and total calories. There’s also no way for me to set independent macro goals, monitor fiber, etc. Also when you enter food- either with the photo or text option- it enters all food as ounce
- [R12] BitePal Cute but not accurate: I do enjoy the cute animations of the app however 90% of the time I enter a meal (whether I type it exactly as the branded label or take a picture of the product) the AI is very much off regarding the Calories / protein / fat. Most of the time I spend editing this stuff. If the AI was better I would give the app a 5
- [R14] BitePal Fast: Takes seconds to track
- [R17] BitePal So easy: I love this! It helped me stay committed. I wish I downloaded it sooner!
- [R1] BitePal SCAM: This app is a scam. I signed up for a free trial, decided I did not like it and canceled the subscription, and it wouldn’t even recognize my email as having an account afterward. However, for two months I have still been getting two $9.99 charges to my card from Bitepal. I went through hoops trying to cancel it and they told me to cancel through Apple. I talked to Apple Support and we both c
- [R4] BitePal Scam subscription BEWARE!: Beware this app does nothing special but charge you lots of money(not through Apple) in hopes to get more money off you!
- [R13] BitePal Will continue charging: I deleted my entire account and they are still trying to charge me. I’ve blocked future payments from my bank but beware! There’s no response to try to rectify this
- [R16] BitePal Unauthorized charges: Unable tocancle beware!
- [R6] BitePal Paywall for everything: Why did it say my max calories for a day was 2000 even though my nutritionist told me 1400? I couldn’t even change it without paying to change it.. now how am I, a 5’7 female who weighs 185, supposed to lose weight eating 2000 calories a day? Be for real
- [R11] BitePal Amazing: The virtual pet is so cute but the one thing I get annoyed with is the fact you have to pay to get everything you need
- [R10] BitePal Try shortest trial first: I did a longer trial to get the best value for my money because i felt pretty confident i would like this app, but the ai scan and other tracking methods for meals isn’t accurate at all and doesn’t work most of the time. The first several times i tried to scan a meal it errored out, and it has no way to help clarify what it is looking at. For example, i could have two sli
- [R61] Lose It! Restricted so much content!!: I’ve used this app for as long as I got into fitness 4-5 years ago you could scan items look at protein carb and fat of what your eating and all that good stuff. Recently just opened the app to find these features are all gone! I get the camera scan as that had been taken away probably ab 3 years ago now but now you can’t even look at the grams of protein fat and carb
- [R76] Lose It! Free version used to be good: Lose it was a great app until the company got greedy. They began taking all the features you could use for free for years and transitioning them to the paid only. The best feature was being able to scan barcodes. This is no longer an option for free users and it definitely takes the app from perfect to trash.
- [R79] Lose It! Used to be perfect: This app used to be exactly what some of us needed in an app. Now that the barcode scanner is only available on the paid version it gets a 1 star review.
- [R85] Lose It! Disabling the barcode scanner on the free version is a deal breaker: Looks like I (and many others) are back to using a good old notebook and spreadsheet for this. Thanks for keeping my brain healthy by putting your best feature behind a paywall.
- [R63] Lose It! There is a permanent ad for GLP1 on your dashboard: Also they pop up ads for ozempic when you open the app sometimes. Crazy.
- [R66] Lose It! Why?: This used to be a simple go to way to keep track of everything. Now you have added ads. It was great the way it was.
- [R72] Lose It! Pop ups: There are way too many pop ups to promote signing up for premium. It causes me to not want to log on the app.
- [R82] Lose It! Do you need the $10 that badly?!: You have to stick the ‘give us $10’ every time we make an entry. It used to be nice using your app. Now you’ve added these interruptions that just make it worse. Do you need to make it so frustrating to use?!
