Turo vs Avis
Turo offers a wider variety of unique vehicles and a more personalized rental experience, while Avis provides a more traditional and often more reliable car rental service, despite some app and customer service frustrations.
Turo, a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform, excels in offering diverse vehicles and a personalized experience, though it struggles with host cancellations and customer support. Avis, a traditional rental company, provides a reliable service but faces issues with app functionality, hidden fees, and occasional car unavailability.
Head to head
You want a unique car or a specific model not typically found at traditional rental agencies, and you are comfortable with the peer-to-peer model's variability . You prioritize a personalized rental experience and direct communication with car owners .
You prefer a traditional car rental service with established locations and generally helpful counter staff . You value the convenience of express pickup and return options at supported airport locations .
Evidence note: Turo's reviews include perspectives from both guests and hosts, offering a more complete picture of the platform's strengths and weaknesses for all users. Avis reviews are primarily from renters.

- [R1] Turo Turo Rental for Vacation: I had purchased a car, was in communication with me all the way until pickup. There wasn’t a car and host had to cancel.
- [R4] Turo Host cancelled day before and Turo didn’t cover cost of new rental: Host cancelled rental 12 hours before pickup for no good reason. I had booked six weeks in advance. Was refunded but had to pay substantially more to get a similar vehicle on short-notice. Turo completely unhelpful in covering this difference
- [R15] Turo Hit and miss: It depends on the host. So far 1 great experience, another ok and the third one was a disaster as my host cancelled me 30 mins before my trip, which costed me money and stress. So let’s see
- [R17] Turo Turo never disappoints: I am very satisfied with Turo. You guys always provide the best of the best cars for our trip. Prices are always affordable. This is my third time using Turo. Shout out to Joey. He was our host. Excellent customer service. Five stars!
- [R2] Turo Car rental made easy: Never knew how easy it would be to use Turo it was made nice and easy very understanding and also communication was amazing I would def recommend and also rent again
- [R22] Turo App crashed: App got stuck and crashed multiple times during process. Totally froze during identification process and was co fusing whether it went through. Afterwards we weren’t able to get the car we originally wanted.
- [R26] Turo TURO app was REALLY SLOW , If & when it responded. It was Unable to respond for several hours.: I really like the concept of TURO. Had this been a business trip, being on time would NOT have been possible. TURO app lacks ability to respond OR help 1st time users. Dayna Gillard Burton
- [R27] Turo Easy as Pie: Makes renting a vehicle easier.
- [R5] Turo Great Service: Denise was amazing very helpful when come back to town I’ll definitely be using this ride again.
- [R10] Turo Avoid using: Disputed a charge and instead of investigating, Turo banned my account with no other explanation. Would avoid using this service
- [R14] Turo Rental car: The host was very professional and I will rent from him again when I come back to Delaware. THANKS RONNIE · translated
- [R7] Turo Guest vs host: Things are constantly changing in favor for the guest and not the host. Forced to book non refundable trip. Car gets returned trashy and guest aren’t held accountable. Creating way more work for us as hosts. The percentage Turo collects from hosts is high. Monopolizing on our income.
- [R9] Turo Not the best option for hosts but still a powerful platform.: The app is quite useful and well designed except the calendar and pricing functions which are a hassle. For hosts the platform has become consistently worse over the years and is still getting worse with higher fees, unfavourable policies and non-existsnt support. Hopefully other providers such as Hiyacar will gain market share but for
- [R13] Turo Turo will steal your money: Turo will auto cancel your reservation if you don’t meet the fine print of their cancellation policy terms and charge you anyways. Called, no refund. Feels like a scam and a lawsuit waiting to happen. Will never use their service again.
- [R42] Turo Don’t change your booking: I changed my booking because I was getting the dates figured out and they charged me a late fee of $191 on a rental that was only supposed to cost me $300 and it end up costing me $500
- [R56] Turo Hidden Fees: Lots of hidden fees delivery fee for vehicle that was supposed to be there, services fees Late fee if you 10 mins late that are 1/2 the day are Was over 100$ if undisclosed fees customer support zero help the. Then they Just ignore you
- [R63] Avis Disappointed: I reserved my vehicle several days in advance or my pick up date. When I arrived this morning, I was told there were no vehicles available. I questioned why and was told “this happens all the time and the next vehicle wouldn’t be available until about 11a”. My pick up time was scheduled for 8:30a. How is it possible that NO VEHICLES are available?!?! Never again will I frequent this
- [R76] Avis Disappointed In Avis (No Cars): This first time renting with Avis for a personal trip. I made a reservation for a car, and no cars were available. What is the point of having a reservation? Will rent from Hertz from now on. They always guarantee a car when reserving with them
- [R46] Turo Been hosting for a couple years.: Hosting cars on Turo is getting worse by the day with changes that we don’t need or want. Used to love this app/side gig.
- [R58] Turo HOST experience: This car rental service is great in concept but for hosts they are straight thieves. They charge at every turn and when something happens they don’t want to pay anything. If anyone is doing a class action lawsuit please contact me ! I have receipts.
- [R61] Avis Continuous forced updates and password reentry: Every time I open the app it is forcing an update, with no option to skip, this is just bad software development, bc never is the app getting better. All I want to do is check my rental!
- [R73] Avis Weekly forced app updates SUCKS: What more is there to say. Stupid.
- [R84] Avis Horrible: Constant re-login requirements
- [R86] Avis Terrible: Locks you out too easy and you have Face ID set up but then it just automatically quits using it. Awful. Look how easy nationals app is and copy it
