USAA DriveSafe vs State Farm®

State Farm® offers a more comprehensive and generally user-friendly app for managing insurance, even with occasional technical glitches. USAA DriveSafe, while aiming for discounts, is plagued by persistent inaccuracies in tracking, privacy concerns, and a frustrating user experience.

- [R1] USAA DriveSafe Collects data from Uber and other non insured with USAA vehicles.: The app is absolutely ignorant as to what and when I drive. If I uber on a Mexico vacation it collects data. If I ride with someone else it collects data. If I drive a vehicle insured by State Farm it collects data. At least State Farm has a module in the vehicle that lets them know ONLY when I’m driving/riding in the vehicle
- [R2] USAA DriveSafe Good enough: Does a decent job with limited false positives but tell me why I get dinged for “hands free calling” when I get a phone call but don’t even answer it?
- [R3] USAA DriveSafe Driving: I’m old and don’t drive very far anymore and just noticed my discount just dropped from 6%to 5% and the score went from mid 70’s to 70. I just got home. No phone use or hard breaking. I don’t get it.
- [R5] USAA DriveSafe Finally! Recognition of Great Driving! But the app makes many mistakes.: 60 years of driving with zero infractions. Glad that my driving habits finally get a cash reward. But this app continues to be unable to distinguish whether I am the driver or the passenger. My wife and I are almost always together in the car, sharing driving duties. But the app fails to identify who is driving and I have to
- [R4] USAA DriveSafe Always on: This is the ONLY app on my phone that requires location services “Always On”. It refuses to work with “while using app” & keeping the app open in the background. Always On drains my battery & interrupts my privacy. USAA needs to fix their protocol requirements for this app or I’m going to have to drop out of their drive safe program.
- [R7] USAA DriveSafe Discount is good but app does not track well: Have been using for over a year and you can get a good discount. But app cannot reliably recognize if you’re the driver or passenger. And if you’re driving a work vehicle you have to edit it manually for every single trip. And it can use up a lot of battery running in the background. I would much rather use the small Bluetooth devices that other insure
- [R9] USAA DriveSafe Invasion of privacy?: The idea of the app is not bad. Unfortunately, it tracks every location precisely that you visit. There is no way for you to indicate that your passenger, or a child may have been using your phone while you were driving. This comes back in a review of your driving habits. My safe driving score is compromised because my passenger chose to put an address into our GPS whi
- [R12] USAA DriveSafe Discount: I’ve had issues getting the app to work correctly. The location always & app update keep on not working properly. I’ve deleted & reloaded but it doesn’t change.
- [R15] USAA DriveSafe Slow Service: It keeps stalling when trying to review trips.
- [R27] USAA DriveSafe Not the first time.: I can’t use the app anymore. It has worked fine and recorded my trips up to this point, besides a similar event around a year ago. Today I find it logged me out of the app and once I logged back in, it asked me to turn on accessibility to a “Motion and Fitness” setting that my phone does not have. I’ve looked and searched for it in the past and still can’t find it to this day.
- [R29] USAA DriveSafe Unreliable: The app consistently rates me as the driver when I am a passenger, and for example, on two occasions, my wife as the driver has tapped the brakes and pulled to the side of the road to give way to emergency vehicles, and the app has not only registered me as the driver, which I later corrected, but lowered our rating significantly because of "harsh breaking." Also, the app went off-line
- [R39] USAA DriveSafe Can’t recognize when I am a passenger: While I enjoy the discount I receive, this app is a source of anxiety because it can never tell when I am a passenger, so I have to remember to go through my trips and painstakingly mark them, or I will be penalized. The harsh braking detection is absurdly oversensitive.
- [R55] USAA DriveSafe Driver discount: The program is flawed. Going from a 30%discount to 26% to 1% with zero touches???? My phone stays I my purse. There is no way that I have access to it.
- [R61] State Farm® Needs a lot of improvement: This app is absolutely slow and not functioning well especially the chat feature. You always have to restart the chat with new person and it gets logged out all of sudden and get disconnected in the middle of the conversation.
- [R31] USAA DriveSafe Wrong policy discounts: I want to know why my percentage savings has suddenly gone from 97 or 98% to the low 80s when I’ve had no trip incidents.
- [R81] State Farm® Data trackers love this app: The fact that you have to have location services always on means that this app is following your every movement not something that I like to sign up for if they would change this as well as the fact that it uses your phones, Geo and accelerometer makes it very difficult to get a perfect score. Matter fact I drive a van that has cargo and typically leave plenty of room
- [R120] State Farm® Battery hog: App itself is okay but it’s a huge battery hog with drive safe and save. Averaging 27% per day.
