Rocket Money vs Monarch
Monarch is generally preferred for comprehensive budgeting and financial tracking, especially for families and those who valued Mint.com, despite its higher cost and occasional syncing issues; Rocket Money offers a free tier and is better for basic spending awareness and subscription management.
Monarch excels in detailed budgeting, transaction categorization, and collaborative features, making it a strong Mint.com replacement, but users report persistent syncing problems and a high price. Rocket Money provides a simpler approach to tracking spending and subscriptions, with a free tier, though it struggles with bank connections and advanced budgeting features.
Head to head
you are looking for a free app to get a basic overview of your spending and identify potential subscriptions to cancel, and don't mind occasional bank connectivity issues or ads R5.
Evidence note: Both apps have significant complaints about bank connectivity and customer support, making it difficult to declare a clear winner in those dimensions. Rocket Money's free tier introduces friction from users who don't want to pay, which can skew negative reviews regarding value and features. Monarch's reviews are from paying users, who generally self-select as satisfied, but still highlight core issues.

- [R5] Rocket Money Rocket Money Worth Every Penny!: Rocket Money has really helped to organize our finances, see our spending clearly and take charge of how and when we spend our money! Alerts are extremely helpful! If you desire to take control of your money instead of having your money control you, then Rocket Money is a must have!! Absolutely love this app!! 5 stars is not enough!!
- [R10] Rocket Money No rollover: There is a lot to love about this app EXCEPT the one thing that would make budgeting truly functional - the ability to rollover surplus or deficits in budget lines from month to month. They have a savings assistance option that they rolled out that you could use for excess perhaps - like if you are saving for a vacation, etc - but it doesn’t help if you have quarterly bills like water
- [R13] Rocket Money Not worth the money: This app isn't nearly what it advertises. "Unwanted subscriptions" are any payments of the same cost that seem to occur on a near-monthly basis. It referred to my transferring money to a friend a couple times as a subscription, among other things as well as the cost of me frequenting my favorite smoothie place? Speaking of subscriptions, though Rocket Money advertises clearing
- [R16] Rocket Money Subscriptions: I only joined for subscription. review but it said none. That’s wrong
- [R8] Rocket Money No worries about what/when a bill is coming out!: It is a comfort to see at anytime when money is coming out of your account. Right at your fingertips,no searching for a bill - knowing what's coming i out and how much leeway I have for spending without over drawing.
- [R12] Rocket Money I love the app! But-: I really do love the app and the service it offers. However, im frequently getting notifications of "refunds" that were purchases that I have made and I have to report the issue. Hopefully with the update I just did maybe that issue may be fixed but it throws me and the numbers in the app off and makes the experience frustrating.
- [R19] Rocket Money Clunky: Not helpful.
- [R1] Rocket Money So far it’s awful: I had really high hopes for this app and thought it was going to be super helpful but so far it’s kind of useless. It’s only picked up about half my expenses and is telling me I have way more money in my budget left to spend then I actually do.
- [R3] Rocket Money UBS connection broken?! I’m gonna stop paying!: I like Rocket Money I like that it tells me my balance and every morning and things that come through and things that are coming and whatever I’m already on top of my own subscription so that’s completely useless but the most inconvenient thing is the handshake between my bank UBS checking account and I don’t know what they use plaid whatever it is i
- [R25] Rocket Money Not a bunch of banking: I feel like a bunch of people use Cashapp, Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna etc. and for Rocket Money to still not have those as linkable just ruins the app for me. I’m bad with money and that’s why I have rocket money but I feel like it hasn’t helped me past just viewing subscriptions after like 6 payments.
- [R4] Rocket Money Costs me more than it helps: Costs me more money than it helps me save and I’ve keep trying to unsubscribe and it won’t let me… so frustrated
- [R28] Rocket Money *BEWARE* Predatory charging: They will estimate the amount you owe them by how much they save you annually so 12 months and they don’t let you adjust the percent or time frame. So if they save you $50 a month they say they save you $600 a year and they charge you $300 if you set it to 50%. I was under the assumption it with the monthly payment because I plan on moving in 4 months. It’s just weird
- [R33] Rocket Money SCAM: They have charged my card for a premium membership for 6 months and I just noticed today. They did give me a full refund but please watch for any surprise charges to your account.
- [R7] Rocket Money Error: I want to cancel a subscription to ADT just keep getting an error message to try again later
- [R31] Rocket Money No help: I’ve been asking for help to get a money issues solved. And still till this day it’s hasn’t been fix. I’m just told to wait and nothing it’s been three months. And I can’t cancel or resolve the issues so I just have it.
- [R54] Rocket Money Not Helpful for managing subscriptions: Not at all helpful really for anything. It will cost you much more than you save. Cancelling a subscription is a joke. Much simpler to just do it yourself. The app is confusing and hard to use. Now I gotta figure out how to cancel it!
- [R34] Rocket Money Useless App: Thought this was supposed to make it easier to view and cancel subscriptions. They want you to manually input every single subscription. Kinda defeats the purpose, no?
- [R46] Rocket Money They want to help you cancel subscriptions by signing you up for a new subscription.: I was hopeful and now I am very disappointed. They want to help you cancel subscriptions by signing you up for a new subscription. There were no surprises in the list of subscriptions that Rocket Money had, and subscriptions that I expected to see were missing. Waste of time for me so far.
- [R62] Monarch Best budgeting app: I’ve been terrible at keeping up with our transactions and seeing where all our money goes. The categories and roll over ability for each month is flawless. Would definitely recommend. Yes it’s a bit pricey but worth every penny. Quality is fantastic only thing I’d recommend is an offline form to see your budget you have to be connected or have signal to view the app.
- [R80] Monarch The most pleasant app I have been used after mint shut down: Compared to other apps, it does everything I want. A lot of other apps I used has tiny issues, e.g. Fidelity full view or credit carma. They had issues importing one or two of my accounts such as Morgan Stanley Stock Plan or HSBC. But Monarch does all of them right. Feels so good to see all things again.
- [R83] Monarch Look no further: I used to like Mint. Everything else I’ve tried since never satisfied me. There was always things missing or clunky. Until Monarch. It’s literally perfect. I’ve never had a moment where I thought “man it does not do that?” Nope. It does it all and does it in an easy to use and intuitive user interface. Well done. Non reason to look at any other option.
- [R86] Monarch Mint but better: Just like the mint I used to love
- [R30] Rocket Money Navy federal: Rocket money will not let me log into my account with navy federal whatsoever
- [R56] Rocket Money Save: I have been trying to save money, but it won’t link to my account. It’s linked to my account, but it won’t pull every time. I try to put something into the savings. It won’t let me it keeps showing a negative.
- [R74] Monarch Great for families: My husband got us started on Monarch and at first I was skeptical. Why are we spending money to track our money, but it has really helped us see where we are spending irresponsibly and then make changes. We are saving for a house so knowing where we can cut costs and see our spending habits is a game changer!
- [R95] Monarch Worth Paying For: I’ve tried a bunch of personal finance services, and Monarch is by far the best. I use it every day and am happy to pay the subscription.
- [R108] Monarch Obsessed: Obsessed with Monarch - well worth the money.
