FamilySearch Memories is a highly-rated app for preserving family history through photos, audio, and stories, but recent user reviews highlight significant issues with syncing, stability, and navigation, contradicting the developer's claims of bug fixes.

Who it's for
This app is for individuals passionate about family history who want to digitize and preserve photos, audio recordings, and written stories for their descendants R2R3R4. It's particularly useful for those who appreciate the convenience of capturing memories on the go with their phone R5R18. However, it is NOT for users who require a highly stable, fast, and consistently functional app, especially if they have a large volume of existing memories or need reliable syncing across devices R10R19R38.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew significantly negative, highlighting numerous bugs and performance issues. This contrasts sharply with the lifetime rating of 4.8, suggesting a recent decline in app quality or user experience. The developer's notes claiming 'improved stability and fixed bugs' are directly contradicted by multiple recent user reports of crashes, freezing, and data loss R8R10R25R29.

- [R1] Peace of mind!: With all of the terrible wild fires in the West this year… I have peace of mind … knowing that most of my precious family photos, certificates, letters, are safely copied and stored in Memories at the FamilySearch website!
- [R2] EXACTLY what I was looking for!: For many, many years, I fretted over the idea that all of the fun things we had done as children would not be told to future generations. Sure, they would know our names and would know us as adults, but they would never know who we were during those form of the years. Our family used to sit around and talk about these stories as a means of entertainment when the li
- [R3] Blessings from: Family Search Memories is a great way to record experiences of my life for the benefit of my posterity
- [R4] I delayed writing my history until I turned 83.: So far, this is quite easy and I would recommend it to anybody to begin to write their history before they kicked the bucket.
- [R5] On the Go: I love that I can use this app wherever I am. We visited my mother-in-law in her assisted living center and were able to record some very special memories.
- [R7] Such a gift: I appreciate all the work done to make this available and user friendly.
- [R18] So easy to use!: I love this app. I can take a photo of a photo or document with my phone and upload it to each person and then edit it and leave it or use it in books I am making. It is so much easier than scanning and uploading and naming and then trying to find them on my computer etc. and the photos turn out great! ❤️
- [R70] Fabulous app: This app makes it so easy to capture family history memories and photos - I am so grateful and that it is so easy to use!
- [R22] Great integration: The integration to FamilySearch Tree is amazing, but once I open the photo viewer, it won’t let me close it.
- [R30] Wonderful: So many tricks you do with this app that will sequence with Family Tree.
- [R60] Memories app: Memories is a great app as it allows me to add pictures to FamilySearch. An example was couple weeks back was in a museum that had books for sale. The book was about local service people that served and or died in WWII. There was a picture of my mom’s sister’s husband that was KIA in WWII, had not previously see. I was able to instantly add to FamilySearch and give credit to the b
- [R95] Journaling has never been easier: I love writing things down here and putting pictures onto the app, knowing that they will be safe.
- [R10] Content Sync Issues: There are major sync issues with this app and it’s very inconsistent from the website functionality. There’s also a file upload limitation that I didn’t know existed until I was on the website troubleshooting the syncing issues.
- [R41] Most of the time it doesn't work: Once in a while it actually shows up on my memories of Family Search. But mostly it doesn't work
- [R268] Perfect, until your composition is erased: Spent a whole hour writing on a story, then when I had to briefly switch to another app, everything was erased when I switched back! This is not the first time it happened to me. Husband had the same experience where some entries were deleted after syncing data. I hope this can be fixed. Autosave or warning prompt, or anything. Memories are written diffe
- [R8] No way to move from the memory to the person. loses attached memories for months with no resolution: Some people’s memories disappear and never come back. The IT department is ignoring the issue. The memory does not link back to the person, and the ID number associated with the memory is not tagged in anyway. So it’s just memories floating around randomly.
- [R34] Gone: Terrible, years of work is now missing
- [R13] It needs to be easier to use with the iPhone format: I have to do way too much work to get a photo on onto my individual ancestors account on the iPhone. Seriously the only reason I got it was because the website is not formatted to use iPhone. So it’s frustrating that I can’t upload and tag and it goes automatically onto those ancestors memories I have to go in individually and hope the website w
- [R25] Best photo upload app, but having problems: I love this app! I have used it for years. And use it to teach all the time. But after the last update it’s not functioning. When I edit and tag a picture I’m not able to exit out of the picture to the main gallery of pictures in order to work on the next one. Instead the upper left corner shows “Cancel” not a back arrow or exit. If I click on “cancel” i
- [R29] Great tool: This is a great tool for managing media uploaded to FamilySearch. Something is broken in a recent update. When editing the metadata on a photo or file there is no way to return to the gallery of all files. The cancel button in the top left doesn’t work. You can swipe left or right to change files, but you can’t get back to the list of all files without quitting the app.
- [R45] Hard to deal with: Can’t easily tag. Gets lost if pdf. When put into a “story” hard to work with adding photos, tagging, finding only as a story in amongst all the memories. The photos and pdf documents used for the story get lost in the rest of the memories. If wanting to work with documents or photos attached to a story, the story is not what is being used, just separate items in another part of
- [R16] Can’t reset my password: I can’t reset my password and I can’t find any help resetting it.
- [R24] Can’t sign on: When I click to sign in with either church account or username, it opens a new window/dialog, but no space to enter username or church login. Force closed, uninstall/reinstall, no luck. Just a non-functioning app. :(
- [R27] E mail: Have requested verification e mail 3 x’s now. Nothing yet
- [R31] App is terrible: This is the most unuserfriendly app I have ever tried to navigate. You would think you were protecting gold at Fort Knox. Some x pentagon nerd must have developed it. I have tried hundreds of times and I just keep going in circles. Please sign in again and again and again. Definitely not happy. What are you trying to protect with all the layers of security.
- [R38] Slow: I have more than 20,000 images. Organizing them into albums or folders in Memories takes ages. At the rate I’m progressing, I’ll die long before I finish. As the only member in my family , I’m alone in my love for family history work. The hard copies will be tossed into a dumpster. I wish I could find the help I need. Some of these things are important historical materials that should
- [R19] slow memories: I have 30,000 memories. Abouty four months ago. They really slowed down. I think it's good for 5000 memories like it says somewhere it works great but I miss the snappy quickness. I can't delete these memories because I would be deleted in memories of other people.
- [R105] Poorly Optimized: The App has presence & is just generally ok, my experience is it’s slow, clutzy & in need of major retooling. It appears that Managers want something more appealing & “sexy,” (oops church managers probably find that vernacular a no go but even so that’s what they want, but someone’s not getting sufficient resource to make it happen)!?!?!?! Best to fix it as it give’s Geneology a
- [R263] Useless without WiFi: I thought we were supposed to be able to access some of this App without having to use the Internet. How can I record my Father's stories when he doesn't have WiFi? Or add information he has given me? Without this feature this App is useless to me. It would be wonderful if you could add this - for us who travel a lot and collect family stories. Thanks
- [R125] Missing memories. No filters.: Doesn't show all memories. Only the most recent probably 200 or so. Also doesn't have filters to show "not tagged" or "no title" like you can do on the website. The website also needs to adopt the same circular tags and auto-face-circles as the app so everything stays consistent. Very Disappointed. Also people I can tag in photos in the Tree app don't show up in the
- [R53] Signing in: I don’t like to have to sign all the time. Never had to until recently.
- [R97] Freezing: Occasionally gets hung on a blue upload screen while I am browsing photos that I can’t click out of. I am not uploading anything when that occurs - it does not allow any upload either. Screen can’t be dismissed. I usually log out and come back later.
- [R23] Videos: I love memories, but I really, really, REALLY wish I could submit videos
- [R67] Great functionality to record family history memories!: I love this functionality and look forward to video upload functionality!
