HID Mobile Access
HID Mobile Access is a free app that aims to replace physical access cards with mobile credentials, but recent updates have introduced significant reliability issues, battery drain, and privacy concerns, especially for iPhone users.
HID Mobile Access allows users to unlock doors and gain entry using their smartphone, intended as a convenient alternative to traditional key cards. While some users find it effective, a recent surge of negative reviews highlights frequent connectivity problems, inconsistent performance, and issues with the app requiring constant location access and interfering with Apple Pay.

Latest update · v4.11.0
What the developer says changed (the verdict above weighs this against what reviewers report):
HID Mobile Access App 4.11.0 introduces Single Sign-On (SSO) support, allowing users to securely sign in with their organization's identity provider and simplify the credential provisioning process for app-based credentials. Note: SSO support is available for organizations using the New HID Origo Management Portal for Mobile Access administration."

Who it's for
This app is for organizations that have implemented HID Mobile Access systems and require employees or residents to use their smartphone for entry. It might be suitable for users who prioritize mobile access over physical cards and are willing to tolerate occasional inconsistencies and privacy trade-offs. It is NOT for users who value consistent, seamless access, strong privacy controls, or reliable Apple Watch integration.
Evidence note: The recent reviews are heavily skewed negative (75.1%), which contrasts sharply with the lifetime rating of 4.7. This indicates a significant decline in user satisfaction following recent updates. Many negative points, particularly regarding Apple Pay interference, location services, and the need for the app to be open, are recurring and strongly supported across numerous reviews. The developer's notes mention SSO support, but no reviews directly address this feature, suggesting it hasn't impacted the core user experience issues.

- [R12] Game Changer!: This app is priceless! Secure, friendly and full of features! Kudos for modernizing the way we work
- [R45] Easy and reliable: Great way to ensure no unauthorized access to office. Phone is always with you.
- [R56] Works great: We installed the system and it has been wonderful not having to pull out my keys
- [R145] Perfect for a digitised future: So much more convenient than using a plastic card as I always have my phone with me and much more secure using Face ID to unlock the device before my ID will work. I’m really glad my company is forward thinking and embraces the latest technology and has removed plastic cards from our swipe card system.
- [R52] It works, period!: I don’t understand all the bad reviews about this app. I have used it since day one and I have not had any problems. I have about 32 card readers at my site and I love the way it just unlocks the doors when I get near the card reader. The only thing I would love to see is if we could label the favorite readers. Other than that, it’s a great app!
- [R194] Great app!: Works even when the phone’s screen is locked. In some rare occasion when app does not work when the phone is locked, open the app and it started to work again seamlessly in the background.
- [R154] Much improved: Previous versions could sometimes be slow but newer versions showing obvious improvements
- [R159] Major Improvements in Latest Release: The App is much more reliable for me now, it works with Tap and Twist and Go every time!
- [R2] Generally doesn't work well: Slow to detect and give access
- [R17] Not User Friendly: It works, inconsistently. If the phone is *unlocked* with the app open, it generally works 90% of the time. If the phone is *locked*, it either takes a while or doesn’t work at all about 90% of the time. My usage is for my residential building, elevators and exterior access inside the garage. Whether it has a good internet signal or not seems to affect performance. The Appl
- [R20] Takes forever to open a door: I’ll be standing outside of my office for 15 minutes some days for the app to connect to the device to open the door to my work. It’s so frustrating.
- [R81] Very Poor: This app works well only when your phone is unlocked, turned on, the app is open and on top. These things are exactly the opposite of the selling points of this product. This needs to be fixed in order for me to consider this a functional product.
- [R1] Inconvenient: I agree with other reviewers. Switched from android to iPhone and now it wants to do Apple Pay every time I use it. With android I did not have to open the app but with iPhone the app has to be open. Just not convenient. This needs to be fixed and I can certainly revise my review then.
- [R10] Inconvenient: My work requires me to use this and I don’t see the convenience in it. Because of whatever Bluetooth functionality it works through, iPhones assume you are trying to use Apple Pay unless you have the app open and ready. It’s necessary to have the app open in order for it to work, and even then it sometimes takes several tries. Going through multiple locked doors on the way to my work
- [R18] Most recent update nerfs functionality: Used to work fine. After the most recent update, app doesn’t work unless you open the app. It triggers Apple Pay and won’t work unless you dismiss that. Used to be seamless now is a nuisance
- [R36] Sometimes brings up wallet instead: Randomly the NFC activation brings up Apple Wallet instead of using HID to open the door. It then doesn’t open the door and need to start the whole process again
- [R4] No need for always on location: Should be no need for the app to always have location services on.
- [R31] Remove requirement to Always access location: The app does its work, but its a privacy risk as it only works when its given permission to always have your location data, not limited to while its being used. Which should be the correct way as this app is only needed twice a day when coming and leaving from office. Why does it need all day location data? Its either the dev team is lethargic or the m
- [R34] Requires Location ALWAYS ON!: I don’t understand why this app requires my Location setting to be ALWAYS ON. This is unacceptable and seems unnecessary. Please change the app to accept the Location information to WHILE USING the app.
- [R41] No location access while just using: Will drain battery because you can’t keep location sharing to just while using. If you turn off location sharing then turn it back on, you’ll have to reset your card with your building.
- [R44] Apple Watch: Needs stand alone Apple Watch functionality. What’s the point of including Apple Watch functionality if you still need to have your phone as well.
- [R48] Hot trash: You gotta open the app for the work you look like an idiot every time you use it it makes me wanna have a physical badge so bad. The watch app just seems to be there to exist. Doesn’t actually work.. If this is the future, I don’t want.
- [R70] Bad Mobile App: After the update recently everything has gotten so much worse. My phone is much less likely to contact the reader when trying to scan in and the Apple Watch app has become completely useless.
- [R19] Needs Apple wallet card: This app would be great if they let you add your access card to Apple wallet. When the tech gurus of HID add this feature, 5 stars. As of now, you have to bypass Apple Pay every time you want to enter a building and it can be quite the pain :/
- [R27] It is difficult to run: I does not always open the door I have to stop open the app then the door opens I would like to be able to add the card to my Apple wallet but the app does not have that option. It should.
- [R55] Apple Wallet Integration: Instead of forcing us into third-party vendors to integrate into Apple wallet, this should be done by HID.
- [R69] Stick with the key fob.: Thai app is a big peace of crap. I won’t even go into all the quirks and problems. Cause if this huge company doesn’t t Know what they are by now. All I can say is I wish I could give them negative stars. The fist BIG problem. Apple setup electronic keys in wallet. And yet this app doesn’t Apple the key to be added. Oh and I’m getting to work reliably in backgro
- [R21] Another “update” another fail: Recent update to 4.10 has rendered the companion widget useless. The widget no longer recognises any nearby readers and tapping on the “ACCESS” icon (the lock) does nothing. When the full app appears it also does not function and I have to restart the app several times to cause the app to recognise readers.
- [R37] Cannot twist and go without opening the app: Twist and go stopped working unless I have the app open about 3 weeks ago. Please fix
- [R40] Widget not working: All is good except when I create the widget it doesnt work by tapping once. You must press and hold and then once you get a remove or move the widget message then you can go back then it works by tapping on it once.
- [R72] Broken after 4.0 update: Twist and Go stopped working on version 4.0. Also It now forces you to have location services turned on all the time. Battery consumption has gone they the roof. They managed to go from a so so app to a complete failure.
- [R5] Doesn’t work so well: Often has poor connectivity to unlock doors
- [R8] Works sometimes: It’s always an adventure when trying to use this app. Sometimes it works as it’s supposed to and sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled number of times. Sometimes turning off Bluetooth and turning it back on works, but not always. Great idea, marginal execution.
- [R11] Inconsistent app: Mobile ID is very inconsistent almost all the time Twist and Go fails. When you get up to the reader, you have to read it four or five times before you can never get in.
- [R3] New Update Drains Battery: The update launched 6/29/26 is causing the app to use 24% of my battery. Please investigate and fix this issue.
- [R9] Erratic: Inconvenient especially when carrying bags, boxes, babies or bundles
- [R24] Could be better: The app works somewhat, but the “shake your phone to activate” is frustratingly poor UI. Just give me a button in the app, don’t make me shake my phone.
- [R65] Very Poor User Experience: The app is not user friendly at all. Even the basic design principles of modern UX have not been followed . Example - after you add invitation code, the app brings you back to the same page asking for another code. You have no idea if your code was accepted or not. There’s no way to exit that screen. It’s frustratingly unprofessional.
- [R15] App: I have to open the app in order to work
