Big Bus Tours
Big Bus Tours offers a convenient way to see cities, but its app and service reliability are inconsistent, making the paid experience a gamble.
Big Bus Tours provides hop-on, hop-off bus tours with an accompanying app for navigation and bus tracking. While many find the tours a great way to explore cities, frequent complaints about inaccurate bus tracking, missed stops, lack of AC, and poor customer service suggest inconsistent value for the price.
Free vs paid
The app itself is free to download and use for route planning, bus tracking (though often unreliable), and viewing attraction information R12R15. However, to actually ride the buses and experience the tours, users must purchase tickets, which can cost around $49 for a single ticket or up to $340 for a family pass R26R55R16. The paid experience includes commentary, WiFi on some buses, and the flexibility to hop on and off at various stops R29R76R85.
Value complaints
- Many users feel the high ticket price is not justified due to long wait times, missed stops, and buses being too full to board.R7R14R26R55
- Customers report issues with refunds or reissuing tickets after losing a physical copy, even with proof of purchase, leading to a complete loss of money.R16R45R47
- Some tours lack basic amenities like air conditioning, making the experience uncomfortable, especially on hot days.R4R13R24R25
- The app's unreliability, particularly with bus tracking and stop information, makes the paid service less effective and can lead to wasted time and money.R10R23R40R49
Where it delivers
- The tours are often praised as a convenient and informative way to see a city, especially for first-time visitors.R29R76R81R87
- Many users appreciate the commentary and the ability to hop on and off at various attractions.R29R76R85
- Staff, including drivers and sales representatives, are sometimes highlighted for being helpful and friendly.R41R43R71R90
- The app's 'locate me' button and bus tracker (when working) are helpful for navigation.R12R75
Evidence note: The lifetime rating is high, but recent reviews frequently highlight significant issues with app functionality and service reliability, suggesting a potential decline in quality or a disconnect between the app's perceived value and the actual tour experience.

- [R7] Unacceptable waste of time and money: We are writing to request a refund for our hop on hop off San Fran experience. Yesterday, my family of four took the big bus tour which explore San Francisco. We only were able to make it to one stop. There was no hop on/hop off. We boarded at 10:30 at stop 1. This is after having to wait for 30 minutes because the bus that arrived originally was filled.
- [R14] Waste of time: We had a group of students in London, we thought this would be a good option for getting around town. It was terrible! The buses are fine but the schedule is awful! We spent more time WAITING FOR BUSES than we did riding! The other bus companies had multiple buses come and go multiple times while we stood and waited. The attendants just lie to you about how long it’ll be until the b
- [R26] Service is not good: Paid $60 per ticket for hop in and hop out service. They took 1 hr 20 mins to just reach 5th stop. By the time I reach, I have already crossed my reservation time.
- [R55] Worst bus service. Cheating people: Don’t try this bus service, 100% waste of money. I paid 216$ / day for 4 adults. They promised bus service for every 20 mins. I waited for 1 hr for bus to arrive at one of THEIR bus terminal and bus didn’t arrive. AGAIN DON’T TRUST THIS COMPANY.
- [R16] Scam: We bought a two days pass in DC for a family of 5 (340$) and lost the paper ticket on day one. Despite a picture of the ticket, and confirmation of payment. They didn’t allow us to use the rest of our ticket. This is criminal.
- [R45] DO NOT PURCHASE TICKETS IN ADVANCE: Purchased tickets online then went to the stop in DC and the kid walking around with a scanner scanned my phone and printed out a ticket. Never said the busses were delayed. Waited over an hour. Never got on the bus, we had to be in a different state. The kid told us to chat with someone to get a refund. It has been weeks and the only response we get is, the bes
- [R47] Horrible customer service: I’ve lost the printout as no one explained significance of the paper copy., I’ve asked to reissue the ticket., but got copy of service agreement instead. 90$ lost., horrible service
- [R4] No AC on Buses: These buses do not have AC, and I wish they fact was more visible on their website. Had I known it, I would have been more prepared or chosen another option like one of the city buses or an Uber. It was a hot day in Las Vegas and it felt like driving around in a microwave oven. They can’t control the weather, but they can control the information they share prominently in their prom
- [R13] NY TOUR HAS NO AC: 99 degrees they dont even have windows
- [R24] Not Intuitive in San Francisco: The app is not particularly intuitive. It was hard to see the sight markers because the bus icons were in the way. The maps that the bus driver handed out could have a little more information. The driver passed the first stop before everyone could figure out what was happening. Several on the bus had wanted the first stop. The audio took 4 stops to sink up with the
- [R25] London: No a/c. WiFi didn’t work 4 hours into the tour around London. Drivers were nice. London was packed. Drivers were amazing with all the traffic
- [R10] Terrible App and Service: This company is just terrible. The app is not accurate at all for the bus stops and the buses don’t follow the routes either. They completely skip major stops without and notice or communication. Attempting to contact their “customer service” is a waste of time and a joke. Don’t waste your time or money with this company.
- [R23] Not responsive enough to be useful: BigBus London. App is fine for route planning, but real time bus info is useless. Ended up having to switch to public transportation, making the fee for BigBus a complete waste of money.
- [R40] Bus tracker doesn’t work: Decent app for tracking your location and bus stops, but bus tracked doesn’t work. Either fix it or remove tracking from app.
- [R49] Disinformation: The app does not track the timing or the expectation of timing of the uptown bus in NYC. It says frequency every 30 min when it’s really every 60. Then the estimate that is supposed to track when the next bus is coming is ALSO inaccurate. We waited close to an hour in the sun with little kids waiting for the Blue route bus bc of tha false information given by this app. Extremely di
- [R29] Great experience: I went on big bus in both Paris and London. I had a great time as it was an interesting way to get to know the city. I especially enjoyed the commentary and free WiFi. I used it to get around a lot and would definitely do it again.
- [R76] A must do!: My husband and I were able see everything! We stayed on the bus the whole cycle, then rode again and jumped off where we wanted! The commentary comes in many languages as well. You won’t be disappointed!!
- [R81] Best way to see any large city: Washington DC - great because of the different lines and the area they cover. The DC Metro is great but you don’t have the views or the commentary. New York - You get to see so much without getting caught up in the crowds. Perfect for a first time visit. When you go through a quaint neighborhood - hop off and walk around. Perfect way to get to Macy’s. Barcelon
- [R87] Big Red BLAST in Dublin!: We really enjoyed the service and the staff with a Big Red Bus in Dublin. We bought the three day pass because of the cool weather, and used it as our primary transportation around the city. With that three day pass you also get a night tour to see the Christmas lights and the docklands and an amazing tour up to Howth to see the Irish Sea. We think that it was completely
- [R85] Great way to see NY for the first time: Loved the commentary, easy to understand. Hop on/hop off. Only complaint…. The bus didn’t have any heat… at all, and the entire state of NY experienced the artic freeze…. Hey, winter happens….. Other than missing some heat, I give it 2 thumbs up
- [R41] Sisters trip: Thank u to Casandra (Times Square) for giving us the info and service we needed. She explained the process in a professional manner and gave us her # in case we decided to buy tickets. The other sales people were too too pushy and aggressive. We were completely turned off. Casandra was fantastic in her approach to selling the tour. We came back next day to find her and book w her. Sh
- [R43] Excellent tour and service: The tour was terrific. The guides were knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The best part was the service. Everyone was most helpful. They made the experience very enjoyable. I highly recommend Big Bus Tour in Dublin.
- [R71] Big Bus Chicago: We have been on Big Bus in several cities and have loved them all. We rode again today while in Chicago. This was our first time taking our son who is 3. He had such a fun time and our driver Candice was fantastic! She was so fun to listen to and was awesome with our son. Riding a double decker bus (like Peppa Pig) was the highlight of his trip and Candice made it even better. She
- [R90] Great staff!: Staff super helpful navigating the how-to’s of taking this awesome trip!
- [R12] Needs Improvement: Used the app in Paris. Positives: The “locate me” button is very helpful as is the bus tracker. Opportunities: Add audio option ON THE APP to use your own headphones. Far too many portals on multiple Paris busses did not work. Add a list feature with each stop vs the clunky way of finding them via locating the number on the map and clicking it.
- [R75] Ap with his tracker: The bus tracker is nice.
- [R3] Routes not accurate: We waited at a stop and saw the bus coming our way and then it diverted. Someone then unrelated to the company informed us Big Bus wasn’t stopping at this particular stop today. It was diverting. Would have been a huge help if app showed that stop closed for the day.
- [R8] Bus tracking: Bus tours are great with good information but bus tracking is not accurate and makes waiting time very long. It doesn’t show all the buses so it makes hard to plan for when to finish at an attraction to get the bus without having to wait 45min for a bus.
- [R15] Rating the APP not the SERVICE: To be clear, this is in no way reflects on the Big Bus Tour service as it was fantastic in London. My gripe is with the app itself, specifically the bus tracking feature. With multiple routes overlapping each other here in London, the map is incredible hard to use and to tell which direction a certain route travels. If you zoom into the map, the routes look like the
- [R2] Missing a state: Bought a ticket for a tour of Philadelphia but the app doesn’t have the state as an option. Confused how I was able to get a ticket but the app doesn’t have the state listed.
- [R18] Where is Philadelphia?: I downloaded the app after purchasing my tickets on the website to find that when I switch my cities to Philadelphia is not offered as one of your big bus tours on the app.
- [R19] Munich missing: The app is great generally but bought some tickets recently in Munich and was frustrated to find there was no city option for Munich despite there being buses there, is this a mistake?
- [R61] Philadelphia is missing on app: Just downloaded app and was asked to chose a city. Either user-interface is bad or Philadelphia isn’t on there.
- [R58] Paper Ticket Seriously: So I booked online on the app but instead it f having me download the reference on the app, they print me this paper ticket that I now have to keep for two days. No way to reverse
- [R234] App and Bus review: First and foremost don’t forget to keep your ticket because the phone is “just a voucher”. They won’t allow you to ride without the ticket even though my phone shows the date time and I can prove my identity. What a crock. We had to Uber home. If you are going to Bondi just Uber. It’s cheaper and less of a hassle. As far as the app it was ok. It had trouble pin pointing the bu
- [R20] Guide: It would have been 5 stars if you still had live guides. The pre-recording is disappointing
- [R335] Big Bus London: Having taken this tour a previous year I really preferred the live commentary rather than current recorded commentary. With a person the experience is more interactive, they can easily point in the direction of approaching landmarks etc. I felt this isn’t as dynamic although the drivers were all very friendly considering the traffic congestion they drive in.
