Voice Dream
Voice Dream is a powerful text-to-speech app highly valued by many users, especially students and those with reading disabilities, but it faces significant criticism regarding its pricing model, AI voice quality, and technical glitches.
Voice Dream is a highly-rated text-to-speech app, particularly beneficial for academics and individuals with reading difficulties, offering features like bookmarking and highlighting. However, recent changes to a subscription model and issues with AI voice quality, along with reports of billing problems and technical bugs, have led to user frustration and a mixed perception of its current value.
Free vs paid
Reviews indicate that Voice Dream has shifted from a one-time purchase model to a subscription service, with many users complaining about being forced to pay for features or voices they previously owned R3R33R38R97. Some users report being unable to use the app at all without a subscription or trial payment R7R14R16R36. While some reviews mention a 'free service' R22, the prevailing sentiment is that core functionality and quality voices are now behind a paywall R7R14R16R18. The paid version offers advanced features like bookmarking, highlighting, and exporting notes, which are highly valued by academic users R4.
Value complaints
- Many users who paid for lifetime access or individual voices in the past are now forced into a subscription model, losing access to previously purchased content.R3R33R38R97
- The app is perceived as expensive, with prices up to $80, and many users feel it's not worth the cost given the quality of voices and reported glitches.R5R18R20R34
- Numerous complaints about deceptive free trial offers, automatic annual subscriptions (up to $80), and difficulties canceling or getting refunds.R6R17R25R34
- Some users report being unable to use the app at all without paying or subscribing, even for basic functions.R7R14R16R36
Where it delivers
- The app is highly valued by students and academics for its ability to read textbooks and research materials, with features like bookmarking, highlighting, and exporting notes saving significant time.R1R4R9R55
- It is considered a 'lifesaver' and 'life changer' for individuals with reading disabilities, dyslexia, or legal blindness, providing essential accessibility to written content.R9R22R24R29

- Some users praise the customer support for being responsive and resolving issues quickly.R46
It is worth paying for Voice Dream if you are an academic, student, or someone with reading disabilities who relies heavily on text-to-speech for long documents, research, or textbooks, and you find the app's specific features like bookmarking, highlighting, and offline access to be critical for your workflow R1R4R9R55. It is also worthwhile if you are a legacy user who still has access to previously purchased features and voices, and you find the app stable and functional .
You should skip Voice Dream if you are looking for natural-sounding AI voices, as many users find them robotic and inferior to alternatives like NaturalReader or Speechify R5R10R11R48. Also, skip if you are sensitive to subscription models, as many users report issues with deceptive trial offers, shadow charging, and being forced into annual subscriptions R6R17R25R34. If you experience frequent glitches, freezing, or crashing, it may not be worth the investment .
Evidence note: The reviews show a strong negative skew from users experiencing monetization changes and technical issues, especially regarding AI voices and subscription models. Positive reviews often come from long-term users who found the app transformative for their reading needs, particularly before the shift to subscriptions or those who still have access to legacy features. There's a clear divergence in sentiment between those who value its core functionality for accessibility/academics and those frustrated by its current pricing and voice quality.

- [R3] Early adopter- punished: I paid for lifetime access prior to the integration of AI and now the voice I paid for does not work anymore. Waste of money
- [R33] Scam: They removed voices that I payed for in the legacy version. New version voices are awful. I suggest readest, ghost reader, and AI Reader. Much better and free as of now.
- [R38] Can no longer restore purchases for voices I've had for years: Have used the app for years but upon switching to new phone I don't have any of the voices I've purchased. I try to use the restore purchase option but it does nothing. If I try to use my voices I just get promoted to pay for a subscription.
- [R97] Purchased Voices GONE: Why have the voices disappeared, why are we being asked to pay again? When I paid the first time nothing was mentioned the fact that the voices that I paid premium dollars would be deleted from the the app AND then I would have to pay again (a second time)(for the exact same thing), and on top of that, do you want to get paid monthly, for the same thing I already paid fo
- [R5] Sounds terrible: This sounds awful. DON’T BUY! I purchased it for a month and even the paid versions are terrible. NaturalReader was much better and I’ll still with that. If I could , I’d give it a zero.
- [R18] No sample: Very expensive app that doesnt allow you to test it first. I'm not going to pay 70 dollars for something I haven't even tested. That's garbage.
- [R20] Disappointed: Overpriced ai voices. Only one tolerable. Selling this as A.D.A. Is a stretch. Free programs using artists exist. Uninstalling.
- [R34] Bad, tricky subscription: The trial period is only 3 days, hardly enough to evaluate. Renewed automatically for a year at 79.99. I unsubscribed to avoid another charge in a year. My bad. Unlike most apps, it will not honor the license until the subscription runs out.
- [R6] Shadow Charging: I was charged even though when I did free trial; I did not have a charge card attached to the account. After I added the card, the subscription section had no Voice Dream app listed as being due for Annual Subscription. So if person does a free trial, and there is no credit card attached; it will go into hiding and drag along for who knows how long. The fact that there is no card
- [R17] Sleazy: I was offered a 7-day trial. That was mysteriously changed to 3-days. Then I see a note that says you must cancel 24-hours before your subscription expires. I like the app, but that is simply to sleazy. I’ll find another solution.
- [R25] Beware: The app has some redeeming qualities, as an app it’s not terrible per se. The big problem for me, and the reason why I’m giving it one star, is that because when trying to cancel my trial. The app would not allow me to. What’s worse, is that there’s this convoluted login process that doesn’t allow you to simply log into the app or even access a subscription through Apple and cancel it. An
- [R7] no.: why do I need a subscription to unpause it?? I can’t even read with this app.
- [R14] No Free Option: I would use any bottom of the barrel voice to read my PDFs, but this app doesn’t even offer a free version. I am not going to pay for something that should be free and can be gotten elsewhere. I am deleting the app and won’t come back if a free option isn’t available.
- [R16] Not free: Not free
- [R36] DONT DOWNLOAD THIS!: They force you to do the subscription before doing it. So if you want a full life trial. It won’t let you!
- [R1] Vision and great resources: This is one of them. This program on my phone got me through a very rigorous graduate level program with honors. I was able to listen to all textbooks and articles with ease. I could adapt the speed the color. The print.
- [R4] Beats Speechify for academics!: Got this to read my research material for my PhD. Was working full time and taking care of my family. Voice dream’s bookmark and highlight feature allows you to tab sentences while on a run or a drive and lets you export only your tabbed text into a single txt file with the push of a button! Saves me weeks of time writing notes, trying to find them for papers/diss
- [R9] Just my experience: I’ve struggled with reading my entire life, in school, trying to keep up with classmates, and later at work, trying not to fall behind my colleagues. I tried so many reading apps over the years. Most were expensive, and even then, they still couldn’t do what I needed. Voice Dream changed everything for me. The first time I used it, it felt like a locked door finally opened.
- [R55] I use VoiceDream Everyday of my life: I use VoiceDream everyday of my life. It is the single most helpful accommodation that I use for my dyslexia in order to succeed in school. It has empowered me to not let reading fatigue get in the way of my learning. I love VoiceDream.
- [R22] Thank you: This app is a lifesaver. And that they continue to offer this as a free service is radical in today’s landscape of subscription apps. Thank you, Voice Dream!
- [R24] Awesome: Truly a life changer-- and this is the first review of an app I've ever written. Thank you VoiceDream !!!!!
- [R29] Voice Dream: Being legally blind makes it next to impossible to read a regular book, but Voice Dream makes it totally possible! Thank you
- [R44] Use it a lot: I pull books, articles, web pages, emails even my own stuff into Voice Dream and read it back to myself. My favorite app!
- [R60] Thank you: Your App has provided me the tools to continue learning. I have been teaching for more that 42years and reading material is often very time consuming and making the time is often difficult . Your app has helped me review material by listening. Some of my volumes are 1000 pages or more and your app has no problem storing the PDF and reading it to me. Thank you. As I am now 78 your app ha
- [R71] Great: Anytime I have the long PDF to read. It goes into this application.
- [R78] One of my Favs: I love this app. I have been using since their first release. I use it all the time for books and papers, super boring office white papers. It's easy to load into the app, as it comes up as a option to transfer. Selecting audio cadence, highlighting, book marking pages and making the text larger are easy. This is definitely one of my favorite apps next to shazam and spotify.
- [R68] Offline access: I used Speechify for over 2 years and it has never worked well offline. My job is in a remote location and has spotty cell service. Voice Dream provides perfect offline operations for my audiobooks. Thanks for making an app that meets my needs.
- [R46] Amazing Support Team!!!: I reached out yesterday evening about an issue I was having. They responded back to me this morning and by 12:48 pm, my issue was resolved. I will continue to use this app because of how great it is. I am so happy to know that their support team will work quickly on any issue that I may encounter!
- [R10] Quality: Very poor quality vocal and annunciation. Nickname not chosen by me???
- [R11] Not natural: This is so far from being a natural reader. Almost any other piece of AI software these days can generate natural sounding audio, so I was shocked when I pulled in my work and had it read in a stilted robotic voice. Really disappointed.
- [R48] barely ai-enhanced??: Except for Rhona, I found the voices grating & unnatural & Rhona had no inflection nut at least sounded less creepy.
