Who it's for
Voice Dream is for students, professionals, and individuals with reading disabilities who need a robust text-to-speech tool to listen to books, articles, and documents across various formats R21. It is particularly useful for those who want to multitask while 'reading' . It is NOT for users who expect a free app, are unwilling to pay for a subscription, or who are looking for a simple, intuitive interface without potential bugs R7R17R30.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative, particularly regarding the subscription model and app stability, which contrasts sharply with the high lifetime rating. Many positive reviews are older, praising features that are now reportedly buggy or behind a paywall. The developer's notes mention improving summary & chat features, but recent reviews do not focus on these features, instead highlighting issues like crashing and voice quality, suggesting the update did not address the most pressing recent concerns.

- [R2] Almost perfect: This is my most used app on my iphone. And have been using it for years. But it has some issues. First, the search function has changed. It no longer presents the list of found items with the extra information such as the folders they are in, etc. now it’s just a list. This has made my use of the app tedious. Second, I have all my docs synced on iCloud to iPhone iPad and compute
- [R13] Amazing!: I've been using this app for over a year and it's the most affordable & consistent reading app I've come across. The voices are realistic and you can even use your own personal voice for reading. I would highly recommend!
- [R14] Best One By Far - EXCEPT Voices: By far the best test to speech app out there. Mostly because of all the amazing features and ease of importing files. Losing Pocket sucked but that’s not this app’s fault. So brining in web articles is a bit more difficult, Instapaper helps a little bit. I know ppl complain about the costs and everything but I promise it’s worth it. I have a ton of epubs and te
- [R21] Voice dream analysis.: Voice dream has helped me over the years become more engaged in, books, reading, and ultimately writing. I have used voice dream on countless occasions for study. Voice dream has helped me grasp storylines better and to obtain a deeper knowledge about many subjects. Thank you very much voice dream. Sincerely, Samuel Scown.
- [R57] First Class & clearly the best: Absolutely impressed with this app. Worked straight away. The default UK voices are brilliant and the purchased voice of Bridget is extremely difficult to decide whether it is synthetic or not. Generally very happy and impressed with this app a definite enhancement to an iPad or iPhone especially with all the facilities like Dropbox etc. and the ability to read out
- [R63] Awesome!: 5 stars and I am a harsh critic! Best text to speech app, with a great default voice. Recent updates keep the app up to date. Finally a text to speech engine I can actually use productively!!! Please add Neospeech Kate and my app will be complete. UPDATE: Thanks for adding her voice!!! The app is now officially complete as far as Im concerned, I have no idea how it could be better :
- [R65] Can't praise it enough!: Love it to bits. I bought 7 extra voices shortly after trying it. Can import doc files with no problems. This is the best, absolutely!!
- [R59] Fab: Great App does what it states and customer service is excellent :-) Only niggle is the App reformats my Uni PDF files which is a little distracting but I can live with that as other text reader Apps don't even open the PDF files.
- [R61] Excellent Support: On the basis of existing reviews, decided to buy this app. Not disappointed! Had a problem downloading the British Bridget voice, but Winston from Voice Dream Reader provided terrific and really fast support that solved the problem.
- [R70] mr: easy to use works very well with Voice Over.Excellent support.
- [R79] superb app: The voice is similar voices on £50+ pc specialist software. You can customise background and text colour, size, font etc to make it easier to read along as it reads if this is your preference. I did have a slight bug on the app, but Winston was very quick in responding and help me resolve the issue great service. Highly recommended, whether you have a vision or reading difficultly w
- [R43] Is great if you don't use AI voices: Voice Dream is great. I use it all the time, the only thing I would recomend is to not use the AI voices. They don't sound right, and they do mess with your voices. I was using Voice dream reader with an older phone and had used the AI enhanced voices, and it was causing all kinds of problems, but with the new iPhone 16, there aren't as many. Stay away from AI
- [R53] Absolutely brilliant!: Love this app; scrolling, timer and text to speech is excellent, as is bookmarking, plus that you can upload books from Dropbox. Haven't tried all the features, but am thrilled to find the app I was looking for all these years. Thank you! :-)
- [R1] I have to give it a bad rating: You switched to the subscription model. Fine. But when I downloaded this app again and fired it up, it told me I can restore my purchases with an email address. I don't know that email address. None of the ones I've tried have worked. What do have is my entire history of Apple receipts showing purchases made within the app and, in total, I've probably spent north
- [R22] Horrible developers: I paid for this app when it was a one time fee. Now I can’t even access my account. It’s been deleted, and apparently lifetime purchase has been cancelled.
- [R34] Why am I being charged a subscription for access to voices I already paid to download two years ago?: What happened to this app? I opened it on Sunday and cannot access the voice I’ve already purchased and been listening to for years. Now it is prompting me to pay monthly/yearly for something I already paid for once! The voices themselves have also changed - my favorite AI voice now slurs its spee
- [R49] Do you know what life time means!!! They canceled my lifetime purchase!!!!: I can believe they decide to make more money and simply cancel everyone lifetime purchase and make it unusable for all to functions we have and now want to get us to pay for a membership!
- [R7] Not free: The app is free but it doesn't work without paying for a subscription.
- [R16] Paywall: Can even use the app with a paywall
- [R17] Deleted within 2 min: This app is impossible to use casually to get to know it. From the moment you open they are hard selling you on features you don’t care about when you just want to see the basics. It wastes time to get you to the actual start page where you can’t even sample one read without paying first. I found this the lest appealing of 5-6 apps in this category I downloaded today.
- [R18] I wish I could rate it zero stars: Do not get this app is it is a complete scan. I literally tried to use a book on it and read it but he tried making me pay for a subscription so I can read a book.
- [R11] Customer of: I’m not very happy for the update… I now have lost all my data I have worked on for several years apps I paid for don’t work now! Can’t down loaded the app
- [R26] Latest version crashing for me too: I love VoiceDream. Long time user. Unfortunately, latest version is crashing on my devices too. Please fix soon VD. Love your app to much to not be useable right now.
- [R29] Crashing: This app keeps crashing on my iPhone Pro Max after today’s update June 17, 2025
- [R3] $79 dollars for this? Really?: Okay so this app or at least this app on my phone is just bad. I mean really bad. I’ll download a voice and it sounds great then it begins to read and within 2 minutes the voice starts glitching. Speeding up, pitch changes. Sounds more robotic. It got so bad I just deleted the app canceled trial and wrote a review. It was either that or throw my phone. I can live wit
- [R6] AI Voice: The AI voice isn’t that great it’s all right what I do love about this app is if I’m on the web I can click share and everything will be transferred to Voice dream that’s awesome But I don’t really like the voice how it sounds I was expecting something like The app NaturalReader I really do enjoy listening to that one the AI voice is amazing
- [R9] Feels 1999 technology: Kind of a waste of time, very unnatural clunky sounding like any text to voice reader from 20 years ago. You can change the voice, although it’s a clunky mechanism, because you think you already did, and then have to fiddle around with obtuse interface. Plus, I don’t need 100 different voices, if they all are going to be in a jarring Stephen Hawking robot staccato.
- [R12] Easily the worst AI reader I have ever used: I see all the good reviews, and I’m sitting here scratching my head absolutely baffled. This is the most robotic broken, sounding AI. I’ve ever heard when it comes to these reader apps I feel like AI technology is so advanced. I don’t know how something this far back has such great reviews. Maybe ChatGPT just spoiled me with how fluid their voices are b
- [R15] Tough to cancel: They make it really difficult to cancel your account
- [R25] Need help? Too bad: I need help. I can’t send a help request unless I read faq first??? Developer who does give a duck.
- [R19] Not good for scanning: I use text to speech apps when I don’t feel like reading parts of my books. This app reads the words out of order…it’s very strange. Maybe because it can’t identify the curve of the page? I don’t know…Speechify doesn’t have the same issue.
- [R76] Waste of £6.99 so far: Some really nice features. Unfortunately currently absolutely useless for reading my university PDF books as it just strips out all the figures and diagrams. Adding this feature would easily mean 5/5 stars. Fingers crossed it comes soon.
- [R90] Can't read between the lines: I've tried to set the margins within which the app is to read. No matter what the margins says the app keeps reading the page numbers and other footer and header details. So frustrating
- [R94] Could be better: For how expensive this app is ($13), and the fact that you have to pay extra if you want additional voices, I had higher expectations. The UI is buggy and doesn't look very polished. There are free apps with much better UI. I uploaded a PDF and it reads the footer and URLs. I would prefer if it didn't read the footer. Also the voices sometimes do have awkward pauses making it
- [R35] Works great, just one bug: I’ve been using Voice Dream for almost a decade. It’s pretty solid for text to speech and has plenty of features. I spend a lot of time driving and it’s great for reading long documents. There’s just one problem. In 2019, it started defaulting to German for documents that I load into it. These files are in English. I reached out to support and they said there’s no way to
- [R30] Impossible to use: There is no backspace. Like you get to a menu that you don’t wanna be in … you just have to close the whole thing down? You can’t copy and paste text? Who designed this thing? What did you design it for? Definitely not human beings.
- [R27] OCR Fixed!: Update: VoiceDream Team fixed a big issue - so the app is back on top as the best reading app! 🎉🔥🧚♂️
- [R52] Brilliant!: This is a great app and I use it everyday on my commute to work to listen to journal articles. The bookmark feature works perfectly unlike other apps. The only problem I have is that it doesn't seem to support documents with images such as graphs very well. Could be just some of the PDF documents I'm using though.
- [R32] Not "Free": Requires a free trial subscription just to use TTS features in the first place. You would have better luck using their free voices (which are sourced from other services like Amazon or Microsoft) though a webpage in your phones browser.
- [R31] Horrible: Spent an hour scanning a book into this only for the app to freeze and the whole thing to delete.
