OnSkin

Value score / 100 Worth paying? No Skip it

OnSkin offers valuable product analysis for skincare, but its aggressive paywall and high subscription costs make it difficult to recommend paying for, especially when free alternatives exist.

Free + in-app purchases seen up to $40 4.7★ lifetime (32,982) since 2022

OnSkin helps users identify harmful ingredients and suitable products by scanning labels, which many find quick and helpful for improving their skincare routines R1R4R5R11. However, a significant number of recent reviews indicate that core features, including scanning and accessing routines, are locked behind a paywall almost immediately after installation or after a few uses, leading to frustration over high weekly subscription costs R17R30R31R46.

Free vs paid

The free version of OnSkin initially allows users to scan products and receive information on ingredients and suitability, with some users reporting decent access R26. However, many recent reviews state that the app quickly restricts functionality, requiring payment for basic features like scanning, viewing suggested routines, or seeing product matches R17R30R31R34. The paid premium version unlocks unlimited scans and access to all features, but its cost is a major point of contention R17R46.

Value complaints

  • Many users report that the app forces them to pay for premium almost immediately or after only a few scans, locking essential features like scanning and routines behind a paywall.R17R30R31R34
  • The subscription cost, particularly the reported $10 a week, is considered excessive for a simple app, especially when compared to alternatives.R23R46
  • Some users are unable to pay for subscriptions or feel they should not have to pay to simply check if products are good.R28R30
  • The app's requirement for Apple sign-in is a barrier for some users.R8R16

Where it delivers

  • The app is quick and easy to use for checking harmful ingredients and informing purchases, saving users research time.R1R4R5R45
  • It helps users, including teens, identify products that are good for their skin type and avoid irritation, leading to improved skin.R11R18R21R36
  • The app's ability to scan labels or product faces, rather than just barcodes, is convenient.R1
  • It provides clear and understandable information about product risks and matches with skin types.R2R18R40
Worth paying if

It is worth paying for if you are deeply committed to thoroughly analyzing every skincare product you use, find its specific database comprehensive for your needs, and are willing to pay a high weekly subscription fee for unlimited access to its scanning and analysis features R1R4R5R11.

Skip / stay free if

You should skip paying for OnSkin if you are on a budget, are not allowed to have subscriptions, or expect to use the app for more than a few scans without encountering a paywall R17R28R30R31. Users who find the app's database incomplete for their products or who prefer alternatives with more reasonable pricing, like Yuka, should also skip paying R10R15R46.

Evidence note: Recent reviews R17R30R31 are heavily skewed negative regarding the paywall, contrasting with the high lifetime rating and older positive reviews R1R4R5R11 that praise the app's functionality, sometimes mentioning free access . This suggests a recent change in monetization strategy.

  1. [R17] 3/5 · AU Do and don’t like: I love the app and it works really well and helps a lot but I have only used this app for 15mins and now it isn’t allowing me to use or do anything without paying for premium. It wont let me scan unless I use premium, and it wont give me my suggested skincare routine without premium and with won’t even let me see if it’s a match without premium or use the skin helper WITHOUT PRE
  2. [R30] 1/5 · AU OnSkin the app is soo bad!!: This app is so bad because u have to PAY to use it like all I want to do is see if products are good!
  3. [R31] 1/5 · AU No access: You can’t actually open or look in the app unless you buy a weekly or yearly access passes. I found this weird because you don’t know if you’ll like it unless you’ve seen it but I guess everyone is different.
  4. [R34] 4/5 · AU Onskin: I am OBSESSED with this app and I would recommend it however the subscription restrictions are a little bit extreme because to find a suitable cleanser I would only get to se the top product and nothing else
  5. [R23] 4/5 · AU Amazing: It’s giving great results but I would honestly prefer that the pro could be slightly cheaper but all in all it’s amazing
  6. [R46] 1/5 · AU Great app at first, then they try to make me pay $10 a week: This was a great app at first, told me exactly what skin care products would harm my skin and which wouldn’t. Then after a few scans of products they tried to make me pay $10 a week for unlimited scans. $10 a week for a simple app like this is ridiculous. If you want a good app download Yuka, their pro version is $20 a year
  7. [R28] 2/5 · AU (: Please make ads I’m not allowed to have subscriptions
  8. [R8] 1/5 · AU Update is weird: I used to have this app and was able to use it perfectly fine, but now I have to use apple sign in to even get into the app. None of the phones I’ve ever had can actually use apple sign in, it makes the app much less accessible for people.
  9. [R16] 1/5 · AU Account: 🎀✨I liked the app but I don’t want my Apple account to be on there😫✨🎀
  10. [R1] 5/5 · AU Love it: Has almost every product i needed to check for harmful ingredients , not having to scan the barcode (just the label or product face) makes it a lot easier to find the exact product.
  11. [R4] 5/5 · AU Loving this app: So quick and easy to use. I have used it to clean out a number of products in my home and to inform my purchases.
  12. [R5] 5/5 · AU Wow!: I just used it for 5 minutes and already so impressed!!! I usually spend hours researching a product and now it can be this instant??? Insane!!!
  13. [R45] 5/5 · AU Quick respond: Very good app to find out about the high or low risks ingredients in cosmetics products.👍
  14. [R11] 5/5 · AU I love OnSkin: I used to have acne all of my face and then I looked at all my products and I realise that only a few of them was doing me good so now I only have a short and simple skin care routine and the only products that I use are over 90 on the app
  15. [R18] 5/5 · AU I love it: It shows me what is harmful and not harmful to my skin Ty the best app in the world .
  16. [R21] 5/5 · AU Been really helpful: It’s really helped me narrow down some really amazing product that don’t irritate my acne prone skin! Thank you!
  17. [R36] 5/5 · AU I loveee this: This helps a lot I am a kid and I still need to take care of my skin five stars all the way
  18. [R2] 5/5 · AU Great information and easy to understand!: Recommend this app to everyone
  19. [R40] 5/5 · AU Amei: Além de mostrar o risco do produto ainda mostra se dá match com teu tipo de pele
  20. [R26] 3/5 · AU Absolutely Amazing: The scans are quick and you have decent access in the free version of the app but you shouldn’t have limited scans because it’s a scam in my eyes, but lost of this is accurate
  21. [R10] 2/5 · AU Not worth paying for: It doesn’t have data on 70% of the products I use (they aren’t so rare) and they got my skin type wrong
  22. [R15] 3/5 · AU Great app: Being in Australia, it doesn’t have all the brands I would love it to have but otherwise it has a lot and is very helpful
  23. [R14] 5/5 · AU Was good not any more: This app allows crowd sourced opinions meaning it is no longer accurate at all. One product can have 10 different ratings so you have no idea which one is correct and also allows companies to input incorrect data about their products
