CharmPass
CharmPass is generally convenient for purchasing and using MTA tickets, but recent reviews highlight significant issues with app reliability, ticket management, and customer support, contradicting the lifetime high rating.
CharmPass by Maryland Transit Administration allows users to purchase and activate transit tickets digitally. While many find it convenient for daily commutes, recent feedback indicates persistent problems with the app crashing, tickets disappearing, and a lack of responsive customer support.

Who it's for
CharmPass is for Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) riders who prefer to purchase and manage their transit tickets digitally, especially those who commute regularly and find the app's quick purchase process convenient R1R7. It is particularly useful for MARC train commuters R4. However, it is not for users who rely on consistent app functionality, require robust customer support for ticket issues, or need features like senior/disabled discounts, Apple Wallet integration, or reliable offline access R2R11R80R130.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew significantly negative, with a high proportion of 1-star ratings. This contrasts sharply with the lifetime rating of 4.87587. The negative trajectory suggests a decline in app performance or user satisfaction over time, despite the developer's recent 'Bug fixes' update. Many negative points are supported by multiple, distinct reviews.

- [R1] CharmPass: Quick & easy so convenient. I love the MTA!
- [R7] The app!!: This is my first time catching the bus in over nine years. My coworkers told me I should download the app. I never knew this app existed. It is so easy to use and always on point with arrival times. It makes catching the bus and the train so much easier. I think I’ll put off buying that new car for a while.😇
- [R8] Good: This is very fast and efficient to buy ticket online
- [R10] The best part of the MTA: This application is truly the best of part our MTA.
- [R23] Very convenient!: I can buy tickets anywhere on my phone and without pressure of understanding the ticket buying process on an unfamiliar automated ticket issuer. I don’t have to worry about having proper currency in my wallet.
- [R40] Super y facial: Una muy buena aplicación así ya no sufro teniendo monedas o estar pagando en la máquina de bus lo recomiendo 👍🏻🙂
- [R65] LE: Convenient, easy to use and I like not having to search for cash or tickets! Easy and quick to refill!
- [R67] Very convenient: I like that you can buy all passes with this app including Marc train tickets. You don’t have to worry about losing a pass (unless you lose your phone which is a bummer). Now just wondering if the buses with ever be fitted with machines to scan your passes 🤷🏽♂️ but the app is great!
- [R13] So considerate and community forward: Honestly taking the train was always anxiety inducing but now that the Marc has implemented student 50%off tickets I feel much better about train tickets. It’s so helpful as a college student especially in this tough economy! Ty Marc
- [R3] Terrible app: There’s an unknown error that’s not letting me access the app.
- [R4] Works 70% of the Time: Overall, it works okay as a way but is love if the MTA could join SmartTrip from WMATA. I’m a MARC commuter. MTA instructs riders to open and activate tickets as the vehicle approaches however there are regular instances when the app doesn’t open and reports an internet connection is not available despite other internet enabled apps being able to be used.
- [R5] Sucks: Glitchy and doesn’t work like everything else in Maryland
- [R11] Can’t load app: I get stuck on the loading screen whenever I try to open the app. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but nothing seems to work.
- [R2] Quick to charge card, no support after.: So I downloaded and installed this app for a quick trip to DC. I accidentally clicked the outgoing ticket and it activated it with no way to deactivate it. Call the support number, sent an email, snd no one got back to me. So it seems I would have to buy another ticket. It was only 13 bucks but still, it’s not right. Deleting it from my phone now.
- [R12] Misleading purchase page: After I thought I had made a purchase successfully, when I returned to the app later it brought me to the purchase page with the same cart. I assumed the purchase hadn’t gone through so purchased tickets again. Turns out the purchase did go through and now I have multiple tickets I do not need and will not be able to use.
- [R20] Cheated: I purchased a three day pass and only got two days. I was charged for three day on the 9th of March and the pass expired on the 11th of March at 2:59am.
- [R26] Tickets: I lost my tickets and I don’t see history of my purchase.
- [R42] Steals money: Deletes your tickets as soon as you buy them or your saved tickets disappear. The support is no help and basically says they can’t help and steal your money.
- [R69] Been down for 4 days: Every time I have been trying to use the app for the pass 4 days it keep popping with an error code and nobody can tell me what it means have no problem changing star rating but I can’t use the app
- [R88] worst app ever: will leave you on hold just to not take your call and hang up on you. doesn’t let you buy round trip tickets. SCAM
- [R80] Disappointed: This app does not offer Senior/Disabled fare option. It only has mobility options for one trip not disabled daily passes so seniors are forced to carry cash in this city…
- [R96] Senior Discount: Senior discounts are not available on this site so at age 70 I pay double.
- [R110] Trip planner: I wish the trip planner was within the app itself, going to a separate app with different user interface is tedious
- [R178] Needs to add support for Apple Wallet: Lack of Apple Wallet support really hinders this app’s usefulness.
- [R33] One day pass: The one day pass doesn’t last 24hours.
- [R55] Make it known how long the tickets last: This was my first time using the app and it was not obvious that the one way ticket would only last for the rest of today. I bought one so I could use tomorrow. The website also says it’s non refundable. If you are going to make it non refundable, make it clear what the expiration date is.
- [R101] TICKET PACKAGE SCAM No Reply from Customer Service: I purchased a 31-day pass, but the app does not inform customers that it is a consecutive day pass including weekends and holidays the trains do not run! The app only informed me about the expiration date after I activated my ticket. There is no description (expiration date or consecutive limitations) of the ticket package on the purchasing page.
- [R14] Mindfulness: Is it any way the app can update the public when a bus was taking off line ?
- [R22] Location issues: Always saying it’s coming in a certain but don’t also make it later then what it is
- [R35] Pink Line: The pink used to be the most reliable bus. Now it’s its one of the worse. It doesn’t come on time. Sometimes not at all. An when it does come. It flys by you like it didn’t even see you. All the bus lines are bad. But dang. We pay good money for our rides. More than half of us have jobs to get to. I’ve personally been fired twice because of it. It’s not fair to the riders that count on
- [R36] Bogus: This app is bogus at times. It says that a particular bus is 4 minutes away but in fact it’s 30 plus minutes away and at times it’s a longer wait time than that. I have seen 2 buses leave one after the other while the app says only one is tracking. This issue needs to be addressed so that elderly passengers and myself and others won’t have to be in extreme elements for a long time.
- [R63] Not accepting my card: This app isn’t accepting my card anymore, and I want that to be fixed, because I have cards that are working but none of them are getting added, so just for that this app gets deleted and no starred.!!!!!!!! Well 1 starred
- [R77] App is broken: Won’t accept any credit or debit cards rendering it virtually useless.
- [R115] Card decline: Trying to download but it keep saying card declined and I know there’s money on my card
- [R137] Great App BUT...: I think it’s stupid that you can’t use a Visa card to pay for a pass like as long as the money is coming out of my account it shouldn’t matter how I’m paying.
- [R29] Trash: The app continues to sign me out for no reason when im trying to use my bus passes and then it refuses to allow me to sign back in. Straight garbage, better off getting physical tickets. Would give 0 stars if i could.
- [R79] Its a good app but its inconvenient sometimes: The app will randomly sign you out or make it appear that your passes are deleted THEN sign you out. I havent had to log in for months and use my pass everyday but today but ive missed 5 buses because I couldnt get back into my account when I shouldnt have been sign out in the first place.
- [R246] Touch ID not working because of last update: This is a great app. However, the most recent update has caused Touch ID not to work for logging in. I had to log in with my password. Please fix the app again, so that you don’t have to login with password each time.
- [R247] Mostly good: App mostly works fine & it’s great no longer trying to get an MTA ticket kiosk to read credit cards, but lately the app won’t keep me logged in, have to re-enter login credentials every time the app opens.
- [R50] Honestly not using this again: Honestly, I wasn’t even going to write a review, but this app is OK but not OK at the same time you cannot use the app for two phones cause if you do they going to lock out your account
- [R87] Wasted ticket: I had got a all day buss pass and then when I sign out to let my boyfriend used it it said I don’t have no ticket rip off never again using this nd they need a customer service number don’t have one also
- [R130] Problem: You said that we can still access our passes on this app even without wifi or cellular connection. But what you didn’t say was that after a while if you don’t have internet or cellular connection the app times out, which means I can’t use the passes without internet or cellular. Please help me understand and fix this issue
- [R176] Can’t use my tickets on devices: I don’t like how I can’t login to my devices and use my tickets. I should be able to use them regardless of device I use.
- [R9] Poor screen design: It is too confusing looking at current tickets, stored tickets, past used tickets to quickly get to the ticket you need.
- [R15] No dark mode: Extreamly difficult to read without dark mode option. Stunned it does not have this.
- [R94] Not bad: I just wish they put active train schedules on here
- [R185] CharmPass opinion: This App is helpful in some ways and not in other ways. Helps avoid having to carry cash. Downside is if your cellphone powers off you have no proof of payment. If you have a reduced fair card you can’t purchase your pass online. Once most of the glitches get worked out this will be a good app
- [R38] Taking away my paid bus pass: I had a 31 day pass that dose not expired into 9/1/2025. I go on my app and it is no longer there. I also had a 7 day pass that I have never opened but it is no longer available when I know for sure I did not use it because I was using the 31 day pass.
