Who it's for
Smartify is for art lovers, students, and museum-goers who want to learn more about artworks and artists while visiting galleries or exploring from home R3R4. It is particularly useful for those who appreciate detailed descriptions and audio guides R72R79. It is not for users primarily looking to identify personal art pieces or less famous works, as its recognition capabilities are often insufficient .
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew significantly negative (0.63 recent-negative), primarily focusing on the unreliability of the scanning feature and database limitations. Positive reviews often highlight the educational content and museum experience when the app functions as intended. The lifetime rating of 4.5 suggests a more positive historical user base, indicating a recent decline in satisfaction, likely due to the issues with core functionality.

- [R3] Klimt - the Kiss: Truly informative and educational! Try love this app !
- [R4] The classroom: Truly like being in class at a major university
- [R15] Joy of art: So amazing to be able to identify paintings that give such joy
- [R51] Great for us non-art people: My wife is an artist. When we go to museums or art galleries she knows all about the paintings. For me, this allows a simple way to find out about the art.
- [R7] Super cool!: I am new to this app but I really like it already - what an awesome way to explore lots of cool places, exhibits, and experiences! Only suggestion - I wish you could search by location (e.g. “London”) and have everything come up. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out where things are located (e.g. there are several “National Gallery” listings and it’s hard to figure out which is in Londo
- [R24] Very cool: I used this to scan a oil painting at the Musée d Orsay and it gave me a description and artist. Works beautifully!
- [R28] Good job dev team 👏: I like this app! The scanner works, I get to save my favorite paintings and artists… many paintings come with a blurb, even shows where they’re on display, plus the app looks good :) The search function did take me a few tries to figure out. Say I look up Monet, then Fragonard, the app would search for Fragonard in Monet works 😅
- [R58] Taliesin West: Just used it today with an iPhone 12 and Bluetooth earbuds and it worked perfectly. Also in my group was an iPhone 11 and an Android, both with connected earbuds/headphones. None of us had any issues.
- [R52] Many works and artists missing :(: I love the concept, I love the interface, but unfortunately so many works and artists that I would like to favorite are not among the collections on this app. For example, I just recently saw a wonderful exhibit with a hall of María Berrío works at the ICA in Boston, but I could not find them here.
- [R88] Simple to Use and Accurate: Very friendly app and works nicely with good information of the arts
- [R119] Met your: U feel like Ure there!
- [R1] Keep losing the scans and having to rescan.: Keep losing the scans and having to rescan. Favoriting is and holding onto museum is hard. Keeps sending me back to new museums in other parts of the world when trying to be present. not obvious. Poor UX
- [R2] Lovely when it works: Very cool when it happens to have a painting in its database, which it usually doesn’t. E.g. some paintings in the Yale Center for British Art, but none of its Canalettos.
- [R5] Can’t identify a lot of paintings: Corn poppy kees von dongen and a mattise with a cat i have could not identify
- [R10] Won’t recognize anything: Attempted to identify a painting I have had for years. Using the scan it just states cannot recognize. So I used it on some well known paintings and artists, get the same response.
- [R13] Absolutely worthless: I scanned several oil paintings that had been previously identified by appraisers and authenticators and this app did not ID a single one of them. Don’t waste your time. It’s a joke.
- [R18] Unable to scan: Unable to scan. Unable to download a picture to fine information on it.
- [R33] Why.: I am not the type of person to go traveling or anything, I just wanted a function that can have access to your photos and knows it’s name from my photos gallery, the fact that this app doesn’t have such a feature is kind of depressing, developer please add such a function.
- [R48] Completely useless: Tried scanning an oil painting to try and determine the artist and age of it. Gave up after waiting and waiting and waiting some more. It would be so much easier if you could upload a photo and see if it at least get a hit.
- [R50] Disappointing: I was excited to download this, as there is a piece of artwork that I really want to find out the artist on. Unfortunately, I tried several times to scan the image, and it never would scan it, even though it was completely clear. Also, why in the world do I need to stand for 5 minutes holding my phone perfectly still?? Why is there no option to upload an image? That’s a huge design
- [R11] Will work great: Idea is great. Software will be neat when it works more than once or twice
- [R35] A GRM - lacking: The Smartify integration at the Royal Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England is atrocious. It is horrible. It would be better if it didn’t exist. There are insufficient QR codes (as such, when the app crashes, you have to go hunting for a QR code… possibly at the main entrance). If there are bar codes - they don’t trigger a specific chapter, but rather set you to the start again
- [R45] BROKEN: Totally broken app. The tours never finish downloading. Burned up 2GB of mobile data. DO NOT USE. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.
- [R22] Who knows where the audio tour is: Finding the app less than intuitive.
- [R25] Not What I Hoped For: When I visit a museum, I normally purchase a book and pick out what I want to see, and then plan. I thought this would help, but it doesn’t. I would like it if I could pick the museum and then the artist and have the app list the artist’ works in that museum. But, it lists the works all over the world. I love the favorites function but wish I could group by museum.
- [R16] Not feed back: After 2 hours trying, opening and account, paying for audio tours I have nothing and nobody help with results
- [R59] Audio re-routed away from AirPods at each station: Used at Taliesin West - headphones are required for the audio tour, but the app would switch the audio from AirPods to speaker when it switched “tracks” at every station. Maybe the app tried to force set set wired headphones even though we were using airpods?? Happened 16 times on both my iPhone 12 and my wife’s SE v2 - we each have AirPods Pro (v
- [R8] Widgets?: Where are the widgets?
- [R57] Worthless: No way to take a photo for the app to scan. A green circle appears, but it doesn’t do anything. No shutter button. I don’t know, but I suspect it has a library of images and if you’re trying to ID something that isn’t in it, you’re out of luck. Doesn’t seem to look for style, painting technique, color handling, or brushstrokes to match a likely painter. Nothing I can’t do with
- [R72] Victory of Lord Duncan: Re: Smartify app: Nice to not have to walk to the wall to read the explanation about the paintings!
- [R79] Fabulous way to see a museum: Don’t forget your earbuds or glasses. Includes kid presentations.
- [R188] Excellent app: Especially in a crowded gallery where it’s hard to read the boards, or the print is too small - or you want to know more about a painting, Smartify is brilliant.
