Google Arts & Culture
Google Arts & Culture offers a vast, free educational resource for art lovers, but it is currently plagued by significant technical issues and a controversial push towards AI features that detract from the user experience.
Google Arts & Culture provides extensive free access to high-resolution art and cultural information, praised for its educational content and engaging exhibits R38R66R97R117. However, the app is frequently reported as buggy, crashing often, and suffering from poor navigation and a lack of landscape mode on tablets R1R9R35. Recent updates have also introduced AI features that many users find intrusive and devaluing to human art R2R5R16R26.
Free vs paid
The app is entirely free, with no explicit paid tiers or in-app purchases mentioned in the reviews or product page. All features, including access to high-resolution art, educational content, virtual exhibits, and games, are available without cost R25R38R66R90. However, some users report that certain features, like the 'search your selfie' or 'Art Transfer' features, are not available in all regions or on all devices, despite the app being free .

N/A, as the app is free.
You should skip this app if you are looking for a stable, bug-free experience, especially on iPad where landscape mode is often missing and navigation is clunky R9R14. Users who dislike AI integration in art-related content should also avoid it, as AI features are prominently displayed and cannot be easily removed R2R5R16R26.
Evidence note: The evidence is heavily skewed towards technical issues and negative feedback regarding AI features, which is common for recent reviews of apps with new, controversial updates. Positive reviews often predate these issues or focus on the core content despite the bugs.

- [R38] You need this app!!!: This is the first time I’ve ever been moved to write an app review. Google Arts & Culture has fully changed the way I use my phone and consume content. This app is full of incredible educational information and learning experiences, everything from fascinating interactive virtual exhibits on the da Vinci codices to articles on history, art galleries, and so much more. I recen
- [R66] Amazing App: I’m in love with this app. Many art pieces take advantage of ultra high resolution scans so that one can zoom in and observe fine details. Another feature I love is the stories feature. The stories are detailed, well written, and inspiring. To me this app is like a museum within an app.
- [R90] I Love It: The opportunity to see art from home. Also knowing it’s for real pictures of art in museums. The way it allows for easy discovery of different museums and what they offer. I love it! P.S. I’ve had this installed for awhile. I just now rediscovered it.
- [R97] invaluable: this is my favorite app for art inspiration. endless resources and high definition images of paintings, carefully tagged by artist, period/style, medium, and much more. there is so much intention put into this app and i am so grateful for everyone who has worked on this :)
- [R24] Greatest app in history of apps!!!!: This app brings me endless joy and wonder! Extremely engaging visual appeal that is so intuitive and easy to use. I love getting lost in their maze of learning! The various ways to learn/search for content, are so smart and fun. Thank you Google!!
- [R118] Excellent App: This app is wonderful. Anything you’re interested in, you can spend hours finding out more & more about it. Places you’ve never seen before, you can see them here. I never imagined I would learn so much from this app. The games are fun too, and a good way to get involved with the subject. I hope this app continues to exist forever, and that it continues getting updates. This a
- [R114] Enlightening and Uplifting: I welcome my online visits each day. As an aspiring painter all my life, I find inspiration here. For the multitudes who don’t have the opportunity to explore first hand, this sight is a blessing. I’ve shared it with many.
- [R117] For the curious only!: The absolutely astounding amount of fabulously prepared resources available at one’s finger tips in this app is mind bending. Whether it is just the casual browsing of vast collections of museums from all corners of the world, the casual immersion in random topics which just serve the purpose of testing one’s interest to intimate exploration of a epoch - be prepared to be
- [R25] Love the concept: I haven’t gotten too deep into using this app but just from my initial impression, I love the idea of a free app where I can discover and learn about arts & culture. My only request from the app developers is to please add a feature to mark if you have seen the famous artworks in person. So to add them to my “collection” and learn more about them as well.
- [R1] Broken App: This app has failed to work for the last two months. Opening it shows “app error” every time. It’s not a network connection as all my apps work properly except this one.
- [R35] Not opening: Mine doesn’t even load past the starting screen. It’s says that there was some connection error but everything I search for says to power off my device (already tried) or my data settings. I haven’t got past the loading screen. And it’s definitely not my internet. Will update if it works!!
- [R37] Won’t open: It won’t ever let me open the app because it says there’s an error. There’s never a problem with my connection either. I want to use this app, but I’ve never been able to get it to open
- [R41] persistent error: a network error prevents me from accessing the app on my IOS. I have no actual network connection problem. I have no location tracking issues. I dont know where this problem is coming from.
- [R9] Terrible App: No landscape mode is honestly laughable coming from the biggest conglomerate. You’ll implement a bunch of useless tacky (ai) functions without even having a basic working system that allows for landscape mode. The search system makes it impossible to narrow down subject matter. Crashes all the time. When you’re looking through archives and go past a certain point it will crash and yo
- [R14] Landscape support for ipad: App is great but please update to support landscape support for iPad. It will only work in portrait mode.
- [R18] No landscape support: Works fine in portrait mode but desperately needs landscape mode.
- [R20] Support IpadOS LANDSCAPE MODE please: and i can not access this app with VPN meanwhile website version I could
- [R2] Good potential, but ditch the AI: This app has a lot of potential and I was really looking forward to using it as an alternative to mindless scrolling. Unfortunately Google is leaning into AI way too much, including having soulless AI-generated podcasts that “discuss” art. What an insult to humanity! I had to immediately uninstall.
- [R5] ai everywhere: the fact there is a large ai box on everything is so annoying it obstructs the view and is just so frustrating. why does ai have to be literally everywhere i turn even when im trying to learn about art. at least make an option to make it go away
- [R16] AI features are a miss: I think this app is a great resource in general for art fans. But these AI features being pushed upon the user base are a huge turn off. Why would a fan of visual art, likely an artist themselves, want to listen to an AI character podcasting about Starry Night? I think the AI audio stuff is downright useful in Notebook LM, but here? Just feels like a devaluing of human expr
- [R26] AI garbage: I downloaded this hoping for a fun way to connect with the actual art world and escape the infiltration of ai slop in every single thing on the internet. Two seconds into using this app and I’m prompted to try an AI drawing experience. Lose the ai trash. It’s not art and it doesn’t belong in the art world.
- [R106] Has room for improvement: This app is amazing, but… it does need some fixer-uppers. For example, it needs a back button for not only the street view tours. Also needs more availability to certain activities, like 360 view. There needs to be more museums. A LOT of landmarks, but only 3 museums for certain pieces of art. Other than that, great app!
- [R113] Good app: Really nice app but very buggy and slow. Can you bring it up to date and improve it's performance? Back button is inconsistent and you have to completely find the list again instead of pressing back. When you zoom in on a picture can't zoom out and read the text
- [R115] Can we get a back button please: Why is this not a thing. It's a pain in the butt to navigate through the app without it.
