FamilyAlbum vs PhotoCircle
FamilyAlbum is better for long-term family photo sharing with print options, despite recent privacy concerns and print delivery issues, while PhotoCircle is a simpler choice for event-based sharing, but is heavily impacted by ads.
FamilyAlbum excels as a private photo and video sharing platform for families, offering print services, but faces recent backlash over AI integration and print delivery problems. PhotoCircle provides a straightforward way to share photos for events, but its user experience is significantly hampered by intrusive ads and limited video functionality.
Head to head
you want a dedicated, private space for long-term family photo and video sharing, are willing to pay for premium features, and understand the recent privacy policy changes regarding AI R5R8R23.
you need a simple, free way to share photos and short videos for specific events or temporary groups, and are prepared to tolerate frequent and sometimes inappropriate ads .
Evidence note: Recent negative reviews for FamilyAlbum heavily focus on the AI privacy issue, which skews the perception of its overall functionality and long-standing positive aspects. PhotoCircle's free-to-download model means many negative reviews stem from ad-related friction, which is a common trade-off for free apps.

- [R5] FamilyAlbum Big fan!: What a great was to share pix without having to send to everyone individually or post everything on FB.
- [R6] FamilyAlbum Increasingly a Money Grab: When we first started using this app, it was great! It was a wonderful way for us to privately share pictures with family and friends. Over the years, the pop ups and ads for products and paid versions of the app have gotten increasingly annoying. For me, the worst part is when they took away the already limited “on this day” slideshows to give you only one each day. I u
- [R7] FamilyAlbum Money grab: Used to be a great app overall but recent updates have put previously free features behind paywalls. Like the “on this day” recaps. Seems a bit shady to try and make money by putting previously free features behind paywalls instead of adding new features and charging for those. People notice these kind of things. Truly hope they reverse this decision as I will do my part in letting peo
- [R8] FamilyAlbum Best Family Album Ever: Great way to share photos and videos with family members and close friends. Love getting to see pictures and videos my grandkids daily. I also love the fact that I can get the 11 pictures every month for $ 3.99. there are usually so many good ones I end up getting more than my 11 every month.
- [R2] FamilyAlbum Still waiting on ordered photos: Enjoy being able to see all the photos. I have had trouble receiving the photos I have ordered the last few months.
- [R3] FamilyAlbum Love the app, but…: I love being able to share photos in the app with family, but I bought photos in April and May and I still have not received them. While sharing photos is awesome, if you want them printed, you’re better off ordering them through your local photo printing place like Walgreens or Walmart.
- [R4] FamilyAlbum Worried: I love the app. I truly do but recently my orders have not showed up. My address is correct and yet the photos still say shipped but they never deliver. It scares me because I don't know where my photos are going and they are pictures of my children. I keep getting replacement free photos and they also don't show. I just feel super uncomfortable that I don't know where my personal photos
- [R9] FamilyAlbum Needs multiple uploads: Need to upload multiple times for pictures to get in there. States that upload failed 😣
- [R1] FamilyAlbum added ai into the mix: why can’t we just enjoy sharing photos without the use of ai to protect our children from ai & to have clean WATER for them! AI is not more important than our children. we dont need to search for photos that’s what our eyes are for 😵💫
- [R13] FamilyAlbum Not fully secure: I love the idea of this app as I have some relatives who will post pictures without my permission. However these same relatives were able to buy hard copy print outs of my pictures without out my approval even when I turned off reminders so the people stopped getting emails regarding them. The app doesn’t even inform you that someone you shared pictures with through them bought y
- [R23] FamilyAlbum Exceptional: I have absolutely loved having this app and being able to still share my children with friends and family! We love privacy and this app is wonderful. I do wish you could load videos without paying BUT still a win.
- [R25] FamilyAlbum Sharing my private photos with AI companies: It is a sick and twisted betrayal to take private, intimate photos intended for family only and sell them to an AI company (Anthropic). The whole selling point of this app was to share baby photos with family exclusively to shelter them from prying eyes. Evil, evil, evil company. Beware
- [R15] FamilyAlbum Taking away features: I’ve loved this app for the past three years, especially the “on this day” feature. But I updated the app and that feature has been taken away unless I pay, which is ridiculous.
- [R19] FamilyAlbum Pop ups every use: The main functionality is good. But even with the paid app, every time I open the app they try to upsell something else. It’s beyond aggravating.
- [R10] FamilyAlbum Don’t order pictures: I ordered some pictures and was charged but never received.
- [R42] FamilyAlbum Great for photo sharing but don’t order prints: Brilliant app for sharing photo’s of our newborn with the family but print & album ordering not as successful. I ordered a set of prints & an album nearly 2 months ago and have not received them. Didn’t realise, before I ordered that they come from China. I’ve tried to contact twice to find out where they are & request a refund but have had no resp
- [R49] FamilyAlbum Poor customer service: I have made two purchases from the store. The second one came with a cracked handle. I sent multiple emails with no response from customer support. I will never purchase from them again. The sad thing is the cups with photos are very cute.
- [R28] FamilyAlbum Deceptive privacy policy update sends to AI: We used this app for years specifically because they weren’t harvesting/training on *childrens photos*. It was aimed as being private. They recently started sharing - I assume - photos with Anthropic as a footnote in their privacy policy update for “enhanced search”. No thanks.
- [R31] FamilyAlbum Would rate zero: Added AI under Anthropics in the new privacy policy. Disgusting. Obviously doesn’t understand the majority of their audience or care about protecting children from AI.
- [R61] PhotoCircle Too many Ads: Ads pop up too many times. Sometimes you can’t get out without killing the app and restarting.
- [R64] PhotoCircle Hardly usable: So many ads that it is hard to even use it.
- [R70] PhotoCircle Ads, ads everywhere: Unable to skip ads, ads get stuck on and never end. Only way to get out of the ads is to force quit the app. Not worth it
- [R72] PhotoCircle Ads are a killer: They’re always inappropriate and stuff
- [R63] PhotoCircle Love it, but…: I was using this right? And it was so nice being able to see the photos. But now I can’t anymore cuz I have to have IOS16.0 and I can’t go that far guys… I know this is a just me issue, but what id like to understand is why it requires such an update? It worked perfectly for me before. I thank you for taking the time to read this.
- [R67] PhotoCircle Only good for cell phone?: I just paid for this app so I would have flexibility for my group to download each others photos. After paying, I found out that the app is not available for use on a computer! What’s that about? My older eyes struggle to see images clearly on a cell phone. What a waste of my $10.00!
- [R103] PhotoCircle Nothing Original: Got the premium version of this app to run on desktop to have my business submit photos to be displayed on a big board at an event party in a slideshow fashion. The app doesn’t have this functionality - this is just a less functional Google Photos - which is what I had to go to after downloading all the photos. I don’t see the point of this app.
- [R113] PhotoCircle Now requires iOS 16. My old tablet maxed out at 15+: This app has upgraded beyond my ability to use it on my iPad. The forced update won’t run so I have no other option but to uninstall. Why not leave a copy of the old app available, with security caveats, or whatever? Or make a web version; I use other former apps on Safari, e.g. eBay, AirBNB, now my old tablet isn’t supported by the app.
