TransUnion® vs Capital One CreditWise
Capital One CreditWise is the better choice for credit monitoring due to its higher reliability and more consistently accessible features, despite some user concerns about score accuracy and data freshness.
TransUnion® suffers from widespread login issues and outdated information, making it largely unusable for many. Capital One CreditWise, while not perfect in terms of score accuracy and data freshness, offers a more reliable user experience and helpful tools for credit monitoring.

You are looking for a free credit monitoring app that is generally reliable for basic credit checks and identity protection, even if the score provided might differ from other sources .
Evidence note: The evidence for TransUnion® is heavily skewed towards negative reviews, particularly regarding login issues, making it difficult to assess other dimensions comprehensively. Built only from these 120 real reviews (foreign ones translated). Superscripts jump to the quote here. Apple has no per-review links, so [ref] opens that app's reviews on the App Store.
- [R3] TransUnion® Can't Log In on the App: You can see everyone complaining about this. Fix the damn thing!
- [R5] TransUnion® How about some longevity?: What a waste to have to download so frequently. Minor updates as listed in the changelog, make the application completely disfunctional.
- [R6] TransUnion® App Locks When Hackers Hit It: Unfortunately the app has to constantly be reset but it is clearly because fraud hacks occur constantly and TransUnion locks it immediately. Yes it can be irritating, but what’s better, that it locks out fraudsters immediately or that they let a fraudster steal all a person’s information and create loan frauds?
- [R7] TransUnion® Completely Broken: I give this app zero stars. It has never, ever worked for me. I can login just fine via a browser. But the app, it fails every time. Please scrap this and provide an app which works.
- [R1] TransUnion® Update to profile: The app is beneficial however it takes a long time for trans union to update information on your profile. How is it that given today’s technology you take up to 30 days after the reported account to update information?
- [R9] TransUnion® This app is useless: I don’t know where some of these reviews come from, but an app does now allow you to freeze your account or makes you jump through too many hoops is useless. Also, doesn’t accept my username or password. The app doesn’t allow me to edit information. Has my annual income wrong, and states I rent my house. In addition, an only get a stupid chatbot and not a real person. TransUn
- [R20] TransUnion® Useless and missing data: No way to add missing credit information. The data is months behind, not reflecting a true credit history and not up to date. This app is just a way for them to advertise new credit cards and loans to you.
- [R66] Capital One CreditWise Scores different on other CT’s: It’s odd to me that two other agencies my credit score is 820 on one 815 on another. Both my Citibank and USSA have me well above 800 while Capital One CreditWise has me 792. I don’t think they have ever had me above 800. Just strange companies have way too much power over people assuming their credit worthiness.
- [R12] TransUnion® A Must-Have: This app is important to easily monitor your information and protect your credit. Simple, easy and straight-to-the-point layout. Does not pile-up on you unwanted, self-generating-income subscriptions and additional paid services, as opposed to what the Experian app does.
- [R63] Capital One CreditWise Score activity needs work: I don’t mind credit rating feedback but to look at a bunch of thumbs down because activity increased on a credit card is ridiculous.
- [R26] TransUnion® Cannot access app: In agreement with another review where app is not accessible despite being able to access the account on a browser with the same login credentials. Support for TransUnion is non existent.
- [R40] TransUnion® App is Broken: The app will not allow you to sign in. Customer service verified it is broken and did not provide a timeline for a fix. Not very helpful.
- [R60] TransUnion® Deceptive and dishonest: DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER IN THEIR APP!!! I chose the free plan and was having trouble logging in on the app. My password gets locked every time I log out. so the system makes me reset it each time I want to log in again. So I contacted them and they asked me to fill out a form with all my info. So I filled it out. Thinking “ok this is a credit bureau they should be legit”.
- [R11] TransUnion® Cannot log in: I can NEVER log in on the app. I can only log in on the website. It makes no sense!!
- [R15] TransUnion® Doesn’t work: Type in my username/password but always says incorrect even though on the computer it logs me in with those credentials
- [R67] Capital One CreditWise Are Credit Scores held artificially low?: My score on CW is in the mid 600’s and no matter what I do, it will not go above a certain point. My score on Experian is in the mid 700’s. Why the difference, is it because Capital One is trying to push more CC? It makes no sense.
- [R72] Capital One CreditWise Inaccurate score: All 3 Credit scores are higher than Credit Wise by a lot. This is not cool, no way to contact showing them proof they’re off.
- [R82] Capital One CreditWise Out of date: I use to use this all the time to keep up with my credit. However lately I’ve noticed that when I get notifications and I go on to check it, everything but my score itself is correct. I have the actual TransUnion app and it shows my credit score at 630, but on CreditWise it says it 584…. It hasn’t been that in quite awhile. Do better CreditWise!
- [R89] Capital One CreditWise Information is Outdated: Everything is wrong on my report if you compare it to current credit reports and information. My credit score is around 660, My payments are 100% on time. You are hurting my efforts to improve my credit.
