MTB Project vs AllTrails
AllTrails is the better choice for most users due to its superior reliability, broader appeal, and more consistent user experience, despite its aggressive monetization and higher price points.
MTB Project is a free, community-driven app specifically for mountain biking, but it suffers from severe stability issues and a dated interface. AllTrails, while having a free tier, pushes users towards its paid subscriptions with robust features for a wider range of outdoor activities, offering better reliability and a more polished experience.
Head to head
You are a mountain biker looking for a free, community-driven app with detailed trail information and are willing to tolerate significant stability issues and a dated interface R2R38. You prioritize a free experience over advanced features and reliability R2R38.
You need a reliable app for a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, running, and biking, and are willing to pay for premium features like offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation R65R92. You value a polished user experience and extensive trail database, even with aggressive monetization .
Evidence note: MTB Project's recent reviews are heavily skewed negative due to pervasive crashing issues, while its lifetime rating is higher. AllTrails has a very large number of reviews, with a significant portion of negative reviews focusing on monetization and recent UI changes, despite its high lifetime rating. The free vs. paid asymmetry is notable; MTB Project's issues are impacting its core free functionality, while many of AllTrails' negative reviews stem from friction with its paid tiers.

- [R2] MTB Project Amazing App: Made by the same creators of Hiking Project, this is an amazing app. No big companies asking for their $30 premium for the most basic of features. No ads, only just pure trails and community help. Please let me marry these developers.
- [R9] MTB Project Needs One Feature For Me: MTB Project is a good app for mountain bikers but it misses out on one key feature I need. There is no field for eMTB. A huge number of single track and some double track in my state (Oregon) is off limits to eMTB. Bummer, because we respect the trails and other users. MTB Project offers nothing helpful to eMTB riders.
- [R23] MTB Project Better and Better: This app has it all for MTB enthusiasts. Accurate and easy to read. A must get app!!
- [R33] MTB Project Garmin: Most MTB’ers use some type of external Garmin computer to map. Make your app work as good as Komoots with integration. Having your phone on a real ride is not safe. Phones are safety devices and should be packed in a safe spot not strapped to the bike.
- [R1] MTB Project Unstable: Crashes often, UI is hideous and text runs into graphic blocks. Borderline unusable.
- [R10] MTB Project Nothing but crashes: Used the app for years with no issue, but using it with low service now and it continuously crashes. Very disappointing and makes the app completely unusable. Also please update your UI for Liquid Glass, the app looks terrible
- [R18] MTB Project Reviews: Could not figure out how to read reviews. Really disappointing
- [R21] MTB Project Crashes frequently and…: And it is really hard to click on just a trail segment without getting some recommended route. Other than that, I am trying to get away from Trailforks and Outside magazine, etc..
- [R3] MTB Project Works ok with a few major bugs: I love this app for planning rides, but for usinig it to navigate it has several major issues. The first is it constantly pops up a spammy window for Onyx mapping, somtiimes this window will not close on my phone. It happens constnatly. The other issue is when I'm trying to use the app to navigate on a ride, if I use my phone for a brief time to take a photo, I co
- [R6] MTB Project Keeps crashing: maps keep crashing on iphone when you try to zoom in or out.
- [R7] MTB Project Glitchy and Paywalled: Ever since combing with onx the app just crashes out when loading longer routes. They need to put more development resources into it if I am paying for it with an Onx account.
- [R38] MTB Project The only option: Let me just say that it is not as complete as other apps, but I don’t have to pay a monthly subscription to search for trails. They are not about making money, they are about mountain bikers having fun.
- [R45] MTB Project Used to be reliable: I’ve used this app since it came out and appreciate the downloadable maps with good info. It’s been getting some updates lately that have made it appear to have a paywall or require an account with another company, and it crashes so often that I can’t even use it. Bummer, but I suppose you get what you pay for.
- [R5] MTB Project Great app, needs some love: This is definitely the best app for mountain biking, but I wish OnX would put a little effort into making sure it doesn’t crash, and add a feature to sort/filter by condition status.
- [R22] MTB Project It used to be amazing!: It crashes all the time now. They are only keeping it around to drive people to OnX.
- [R25] MTB Project Getting worse: Was great before Onx bought it. Now it’s laggy and crashes often. Never crashed before Onx ruined it
- [R61] AllTrails Greedy: Ads every 3 photos. I used to be able to see my time and pace for a trail completed which is now locked behind a pay wall. All it shows now is that I did the trail and no other info.
- [R67] AllTrails Outdoor Lens Notifications Might Make me CANCEL my subscription!!!: I used to love this app - and I pay for premium. And it still has a ton of great features to track trails, and notify you if you’re off the trail. But the new Outdoor Lens feature is SO ANNOYING I might just find another option!!! Now, when I’m trying to take photos during a hike, it assumes I want to identify the species of th
- [R69] AllTrails Great App but it’s a money grab: 80 dollars is ridiculous for the peak subscription. I feel like it’s a money grab, I also hate how they show features that you don’t have access to and you don’t realize you don’t have that feature until you click on it. The peak features should be part of the plus subscription.
- [R70] AllTrails map is buggy: it’s good other than the map being extremely buggy. it’s frustrating. i often lose where i am and the screen goes white.
- [R65] AllTrails Great App for all kinds of outdoor activity.: Best investment you can make in outdoor activity planning.
- [R86] AllTrails The best way to find new trails: Unrivaled
- [R92] AllTrails One of my favorite apps!: I use AllTrails all the time! Paid version is worth it
