Ameriprise Financial vs Amex
For managing credit cards and general financial transactions, Amex is the clear winner due to its user-friendly app and strong customer service, while Ameriprise Financial's app struggles with basic functionality and security features.
Amex offers a highly rated, user-friendly app for managing credit cards, payments, and rewards, with many users praising its ease of navigation and excellent customer service. Ameriprise Financial's app, while appreciated by some for its financial advisor support, is frequently criticized for its clunky interface, problematic two-factor authentication, and limited functionality compared to its website.
Head to head
Pick Ameriprise Financial if you prioritize a strong relationship with a dedicated financial advisor and value personalized financial guidance, as many users praise the excellent support from their advisors R5R11.
Pick Amex if you primarily need a reliable, user-friendly app for managing credit cards, making payments, and accessing rewards, as its app is consistently praised for its ease of use and functionality .
Evidence note: The reviews for Ameriprise Financial frequently conflate the app's performance with the quality of their financial advisors, leading to some 5-star ratings for advisor service despite app issues. This makes it challenging to isolate app-specific sentiment.

- [R1] Ameriprise Financial Vastly inferior to the website: Has trouble with my login (says I’m trying to change my user name) and once I’ve wrestled my way in, the information is disorganized and very poorly presented graphically. Used it once, deleted it. It added nothing the website didn’t do better.
- [R9] Ameriprise Financial How to make deposits: Don’t know how to make deposits through app yet. I don’t see where I can do this plainly listed in the app. Any icon or anything?
- [R14] Ameriprise Financial Easy to use App: I really enjoy using the app for all things financial. I’m also really enjoying the OmniView feature!
- [R21] Ameriprise Financial Good…could be better: This App is pretty darn good. Works pretty much just like a normal web interface. My only pet peeve is the orientation of the App. On an iPad it HAS to be landscape mode. I never use my iPad that way and find it cumbersome and inconvenient. I wish the developers would add the option for portrait mode. Then I would give it 5 Stars.
- [R4] Ameriprise Financial Trash 2FA implementation: Doesn’t remember trusted devices, doesn’t support authenticator autofill for iOS passwords app, doesn’t allow pasting authenticator codes, and doesn’t support Plaid integration. Cannot opt out of 2FA. Garbage.
- [R6] Ameriprise Financial Some Limitations: The app requires MFA but frequently the text message with the code doesn’t get sent. You can’t withdraw money direct to a bank account as you can with E*Trade or other financial apps. You have to call your advisor. These two limitations make the app less user friendly.
- [R7] Ameriprise Financial 2-Factor Authentication: I don’t want to use this app primarily because of the log in process. I have 2-factor authentication activated and for years I have been waiting for the ability to automatically insert the verification code from the iPhone Passwords app. For some reason, the developers make us have to open the Passwords app, search for the Ameriprise login info, copy the verification code,
- [R12] Ameriprise Financial App 2FA Needs tags: The 2FA is lacking the metadata for my password app (Dashlane) to recognize the field should be filled in by the 2FA value. The keyboard is also set such that it won’t allow the password manager app to show so now I have to manually go out and enter the 2FA
- [R2] Ameriprise Financial Only One Device at a Time: I like the app very much now. But if you specify your iPad as primary device you can't use it on your iPhone. This is stupid. Only financial app I have that does this. Fix.
- [R3] Ameriprise Financial Shareholder Documents link gone: I can no longer access shareholder documents in either newest Android or iOS versions of the app.
- [R13] Ameriprise Financial Mortgage Access: Literally the worst app ever there’s no clear way to access your mortgage documents, pay your mortgage or do anything related to your mortgage, even though it directs you to this app. As a developer myself this app is just trash for anything mortgage related.
- [R10] Ameriprise Financial Bad upgrades: I had my accounts set up like I wanted them. They do an upgrade and I lose all my accounts I had attached to Ameriprise.. lousy service
- [R19] Ameriprise Financial Work in Progress but progress needs to come a little faster: Let’s be more consistent about getting out app updates
- [R5] Ameriprise Financial Great service: Tanveer has been a professional financial advisor.
- [R11] Ameriprise Financial Mr. Pallazo: Neil Pallazo has done a great job handling my affairs at a difficult time for us. Much appreciated!
- [R17] Ameriprise Financial Very Helpful: I had a very helpful and patient helper today! Thank you for providing great guidance.
- [R23] Ameriprise Financial Top-Notch Business: We have been with Ameriprise for several years now. I find the employeees to be professional, efficient and personable. I always get my questions answered in a timely manner. Joe Enders has been terrific at guiding us through this new financial endeavor. A++
- [R15] Ameriprise Financial Fix tax lot info: In the past, I could look at unrealized gains per equity and it would show tax lot information, purchased date/cost basis etc. It only shows the additional tax lot info now for realized gains. Please return the full information so I can make informed selling information on the unrealized gains equities.
- [R18] Ameriprise Financial Suggestions: The app works well, but the graphs that are available could be more user friendly, and more information regarding holdings should be available. You cannot find how much you invested in an individual holding without scrolling back through the activity of your account.
- [R35] Ameriprise Financial Terrible Investment App: Can’t even easily get a chart of how your individual stocks are performing. As others have said it takes about 10 clicks just to get some basic information. This is one of the least user friendly apps I have used. If I wasn’t forced to use the garbage app I definitely wouldn’t. Stay away from this if you can!
- [R75] Amex Payments: Amex is effectively monitoring transactions and they’re contacting the customers with questions. Great service!
- [R83] Amex The Very Best: American Express is the very best in terms of service, benefits, flexibility and usage. Satisfied customer for nearly 60 years.
- [R87] Amex Awesome customer service: Customer over 25 years, AMX will never let you down!
- [R109] Amex Chairman & CEO Sir. Jonathan Brown: This company is so amazing at helping all their clients / card holders. They go above and beyond.
- [R25] Ameriprise Financial App Issues and Thievery: Ameriprise and this app are not good. Definitely go elsewhere for your financial needs. App constantly has 2FA issues.
