BookBuddy vs Fable
BookBuddy is better for users primarily focused on cataloging and managing their personal book collections, while Fable excels as a social platform for discovering books and engaging with other readers.
BookBuddy offers robust features for organizing personal libraries, including barcode scanning and loan tracking, but has a strict free tier limit. Fable provides a Goodreads-like social experience with book clubs and reading streaks, though it struggles with technical glitches and content availability.
Head to head
you want a reliable, easy-to-use app primarily for cataloging your personal book collection, tracking loans, and avoiding duplicate purchases, especially if you have a large library and are willing to pay a one-time fee for unlimited entries R2R11.
you are looking for a social media-like experience for readers, enjoy joining book clubs, tracking reading streaks, and discovering new books through community interaction, and are willing to overlook occasional glitches and content limitations R62.
Evidence note: BookBuddy's reviews are heavily skewed towards its cataloging features and the free-to-paid transition. Fable's reviews highlight its social features and frequent technical issues. The lifetime ratings are similar, but recent negative reviews for Fable suggest a decline in user experience due to bugs and content moderation issues.

- [R1] BookBuddy Disappointed: I originally wanted a different app. The one I wanted does not show up on Apple App Store. This was top of the list as a close related app. Was disappointed that half my books I scanned. I had to go back and enter in manually anyways save yourself the time in trouble and just get Handy library from Google.
- [R2] BookBuddy The best book inventory app: BookBuddy is a wonderful app and it allows for me to maintain a clean inventory for all of the books I own. Once in a while I need to manually add in a book that it doesn’t recognize, but it’s an easy task to do. I highly recommend the app.
- [R5] BookBuddy Love this app: I’ve been using this for a couple years now. Very easy to use. I have had maybe a handful not scan and need manual input. I will say I wish I could also track my book sub boxes with this! It would be so much easier
- [R11] BookBuddy FANTASTIC APP: I love this app - I can scan barcodes or enter ISBNs in manually, take photos of covers that don’t automatically apply, and even keep track of which books I’ve leant out. First 50 books are free to scan, then a one time and lifetime price for $10. I’m using this to keep track of my 300+ books and as evidence for any insurance needs!
- [R15] BookBuddy Family Sharing Feature Need: The app should be configured to better support libraries of families
- [R19] BookBuddy Can’t share with my spouse: My husband has paid for the service and has scanned our library. But when I download the app to access OUR library, it wants me to pay and scan in everything again! Why do I need to pay $20 and then scan for both of us to access the same information! You need a household option!
- [R62] Fable Goodreads Be Damned: Such a superior app, it cannot be overstated. EVERY reader should use Fable. I only wish it was easier to find newer reads, but the UI/UX is just fabulous for tracking your own reading and that of your friends.
- [R63] Fable Glitches: Can’t add friends easily, when share profile it takes them to web browser/make an account. Accidentally marked a book as read and it keep saying that I read it on my stats when I even removed the whole book from my information. Also annoying how when swipe back on book groups it takes you all the way back to search results of group have to click arrow instead. Bad glitches!
- [R3] BookBuddy Love it! But have request for change 🤍: I have been using this for years and absolutely love it!! So many awesome features and easy to use! I do ask for 2 things to be changed/updated - 1. Please add the ability to search by personal tags 2. Please add multiple tag categories that can be personalized - for example, I would love to have Topic Tags, Person Tags, Timeframe Tags so that I can go th
- [R9] BookBuddy Seems nice enough: Update: so there is the workaround but it’s not as slick as you’d expect: you have to switch to list view, change the order and then go back to cover view. Seems nice enough, was hoping it would allow drag and drop for manual sort order in the thumbnail view. It’s great that you can sort by lots of criteria, but my moods on what to read next shift and I’d like to sort and reso
- [R14] BookBuddy Great App: I definitely would recommend this app for anyone looking to catalog their books and track their collections. My only complaint would be that I have to manually create and add books to the “series” filter. This can be frustrating when you have large book series or a lot of different series. It would be nice if it would automatically gather this information online and create them for you.
- [R7] BookBuddy Confused: I do love this app, I paid the $10 for a lifetime membership. It’s not correct on which month I read the books in. It stopped editing in April
- [R12] BookBuddy Ok I guess: Was super excited for this after it was recommended by a friend. It does alot of things I wish goodreads did. However, there’s practically no indie author books on here. I tried various methods and keywords to try and add books to my shelves and so many indie authors just don’t show up. Even worse is I paid $6 to be able to add more than 20 books only to discover this afterwards and th
- [R16] BookBuddy Not for Older Books: I collect vintage paperbacks 1975-1995 and this app does not work with those UPC codes. It only works with new books with ISBN codes on modern books.
- [R4] BookBuddy book limit: only let me add 50
- [R6] BookBuddy I don’t really know: App seemed great at first, however after adding 50 books to my shelf I was hit with a fee if I wanted to add any more books.
- [R10] BookBuddy Very good: You can buy it outright instead of a subscription. Annoying number of in-app alerts. Update: it is asking for a review every time I complete an action in the app. I’ve updated my review to reflect this, as it renders the app unusable
- [R42] BookBuddy AVOID!!! DELETES ADDED BOOKS: I have complained about this for years and it continues to happen. I am meticulous with my books. Added the correct cover. Record the box. Add isbn numbers etc and over and over books I have added are just erased. I have over 1500 books but this app is worthless, the response from customer service does nothing… it seems like each update removes data. Looking elsewhe
- [R54] BookBuddy Fidgety: It’s too easy to create duplicates and too difficult to remove them. The support option is too limited.
- [R61] Fable Stopped syncing: 1 star because I bright it to their attention and they dismissed me as it was just busy and needed more time to sync. It stopped syncing with goodreads about a week ago. It doesn’t have you in to goodreads, it just has the syncing page that says 2-3 mins, and then it doesn’t sync. It’s not that serious, but it’s the way I was blown off and dismissed when reporting a bug. Also, the
- [R76] Fable Terrible Customer Service: If you have any issues with the app and submit a request, expect to be met with little help and attitude from the customer services representatives.
- [R21] BookBuddy God but has some faults: This is a great app to log books in and reminds you who you have lenses your book to but I have about 150 books and it only lets me log 50 unless you pay for the premium package. Great app but not quite right for me.
- [R85] Fable I wanted to like this app but it’s a waste of time.: Things were working decently until I tried to use the import Goodreads feature and sync my data. Well it turns out that COMPLETELY messed up my entire page by making duplicates of every book and review, and somehow messing up my stats by adding random numbers. I tried fixing it by deleting the import and that did nothing, so I tried deleting all
- [R100] Fable Butchered my goodreads imports: I don't even have that extensive of goodreads data but the import was completely messed up. Books from my want to read marked as read, weird place holder books in my library instead of the actual book, books missing, 5 of the same custom list with one book from the list in it? I probably won't be using this app.
- [R73] Fable Used to be great.: This app was amazing a year ago. Sadly now politics has taken over. You can’t scroll your feed without reading hyper political content. Reading the app description you’d think you’d be in good company for rambunctious literary debates/reviews. Nope. You’ll have to read about topics from ICE and the existential threat of climate change. There are countless apps/groups that are a
- [R88] Fable Disappointingly hateful: I wanted to like this app. Even tried a month of premium to see the extra features, I was so excited! Goodreads can be a bit dull after so many years so I was looking for an alternative. I was immediately impressed. A whole app for book lovers?! With added features for TV and movies. Dream come true! But like with every app with a social media aspect, the hate I starte
- [R91] Fable Bullying & Harassment: I was bullied & harassed on this site. Fable appears to condone this behavior. Very poor service.
- [R118] Fable Woke Trash App: This app is run by a bunch of shills paid by the smut Romantasy publishers. Bug-ridden app with one of the worst social media implementations out there. They bust people for responding negatively to overtly Leftist and racist (against Whites) posts, punishing the responders instead of the original poster. Tired of seeing the worst people in the Feed. I didn’t sign up for this trash
