BookBuddy
BookBuddy is a highly-rated app for cataloging personal book collections, praised for its ease of use and barcode scanning, but it faces significant criticism for its strict 50-book limit in the free version and recurring issues with barcode scanning accuracy, especially for older or indie books.
BookBuddy is a popular app for managing personal book libraries, offering features like barcode scanning, manual entry, and loan tracking. While many users find it incredibly useful for organizing their collections and preventing duplicate purchases, a common point of frustration is the limitation of the free version to only 50 books, requiring a one-time payment for unlimited use. Recent reviews indicate ongoing issues with scanning accuracy for certain book types and some users report data loss or syncing problems.

Who it's for
BookBuddy is for avid readers and collectors who want a dedicated app to catalog and organize their physical book collections, track loans, and prevent duplicate purchases R1R5R13R15. It's particularly well-suited for those willing to make a one-time payment for the full features R5R14R20R22. It is NOT for users with very small libraries (under 50 books) who are unwilling to pay, or for those primarily interested in reading e-books within the app .
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew negative, primarily due to the 50-book limit and scanning issues. However, the lifetime rating remains very high, suggesting that many long-term users are satisfied, especially those who have paid for the full version. The developer's notes mention 'bug fixes and stability improvements,' but recent reviews still report issues like crashes and data syncing problems, indicating these may not be fully resolved for all users.

- [R1] The best book inventory app: BookBuddy is a wonderful app and it allows for me to maintain a clean inventory for all of the books I own. Once in a while I need to manually add in a book that it doesn’t recognize, but it’s an easy task to do. I highly recommend the app.
- [R5] FANTASTIC APP: I love this app - I can scan barcodes or enter ISBNs in manually, take photos of covers that don’t automatically apply, and even keep track of which books I’ve leant out. First 50 books are free to scan, then a one time and lifetime price for $10. I’m using this to keep track of my 300+ books and as evidence for any insurance needs!
- [R13] GAME CHANGER!: I love, love this app. I do a lot of thrifting and secondhand shopping for books. This keeps me from buying duplicates (unless it’s a really good book, then I buy an extra copy or two to share.)
- [R15] Exceptional!: I need a home library to all so I knew what I had. I could quickly search by title or by author I can tag by genre or whatever my tag mind can dream up. I just used it at the bookstore to make sure I was not buying duplicates. It’s easy it’s intuitive. It does not have extras or ads. I do have the paid version, which is very much worth the price.
- [R2] Love this app: I’ve been using this for a couple years now. Very easy to use. I have had maybe a handful not scan and need manual input. I will say I wish I could also track my book sub boxes with this! It would be so much easier
- [R8] Great Inventory Tool: This app is my go-to for keeping inventory of my home library and those books I loan to others. I love all the filter features, ability to simply scan barcodes with my phone camera and have the books’ data automatically upload from the web including cover pictures, plus being able to find-tune presets and wanted/unwanted fields. The best part is being able to add individual t
- [R14] Fantastic!!!!: This is an amazing app for a voracious reader / collector such as myself. Super simple to use, wonderful customization. Best $10 that I’ve spent in a while that wasn’t on a book of course. 😎 I can’t recommend this enough, love it!
- [R23] Perfect for keeping track of my books!: I love the way I can quickly locate my books and it helps me find them in my library at home. Allowing me to loan out books without worrying that I will forget who has them has been a great help!
- [R35] Love!: I love this app! It makes it easy for me to keep track of the books I already have, and the ones I wish to find! And the reading statistics part is great for keeping track of how may I have read each year.
- [R36] My Favorite Book App: This is my favorite app for tracking my reading progress, viewing my reading stats, and for cataloging my library. There are numerous widgets you can display, which was something I haven’t seen with other reading apps. I also love that this doesn’t require a subscription and you can unlock all of the features with a one-time fee.
- [R7] Best app for personal library management: Obsessed with this app and all the ways I can keep track of the books I own. I love the tag feature, changing how the books are sorted, the reading status, all of it. Amazing app!!
- [R12] Better links to current books.: App is good but would be even better if the scan feature didn’t fail with Amazon books more then store bought books. You can add by looking up but seems limited. Needs better connection to romance section specifically for me. Can add manually. Plus sign. Can choose you art cover on the books. Add tags and other tricks to sort them. Mark them read or not and if some
- [R20] Very good: You can buy it outright instead of a subscription. Annoying number of in-app alerts. Update: it is asking for a review every time I complete an action in the app. I’ve updated my review to reflect this, as it renders the app unusable
- [R22] Perfection!: This app literally made my life so much easier. After only a one time payment you can scan in over 50 books. I spent hours scanning in all my books. It’s such an amazing way to keep everything organized. So much better then any app I’ve ever tried.
- [R10] book limit: only let me add 50
- [R38] Paid app: Wasn’t happy to start scanning and then be stopped at 50 books and forced to pay to continue.
- [R41] I don’t really know: App seemed great at first, however after adding 50 books to my shelf I was hit with a fee if I wanted to add any more books.
- [R87] Good App: This is a good app but the limitation to only 50 books is a bit annoying. I am all for pro versions to the free versions but for people like me who only have 50ish books it doesn’t excite me to want to pay only for a few more books. Now if it were a 100 or more books I had then yeah, that would make sense. Would get the pro without hesitation but I don’t own that many so I’d rather save
- [R3] Disappointed: I originally wanted a different app. The one I wanted does not show up on Apple App Store. This was top of the list as a close related app. Was disappointed that half my books I scanned. I had to go back and enter in manually anyways save yourself the time in trouble and just get Handy library from Google.
- [R16] Pretty good: Using it to catalog and organize our home library. Some features are a little clunky, and some genres (like Romance) are not recognized and clumps them into Fiction. About half scanned bar codes take, which saves a lot of time, but makes the rest require manual input. I hope there’s continued improvement or development for long term use
- [R50] Not for Older Books: I collect vintage paperbacks 1975-1995 and this app does not work with those UPC codes. It only works with new books with ISBN codes on modern books.
- [R86] .: search online feature is unbelievably bad (scanning bar codes isn’t much better especially for older books), made adding my library to this app an awful experience. once i was finished the app was helpful
- [R9] Almost perfect: Please add the ability to sort by last name! This would make it a perfect app.
- [R43] Almost Perfect: I love this app so much. I’ve been using it for years, it helps me organize my books and I’m almost at 500 now. The only feature I wish it had was the ability to sort by author last name. My books are organized on my shelves this way and it would make everything so much easier when it came time to shelve books.
- [R169] Poor sorting options: It’s kind of crazy you can sort by author’s last name, only first name since alphabetically by last name is the standard.
- [R172] Good but could be better: I wish the authors could categorized by last name instead of first
- [R59] Can’t share with my spouse: My husband has paid for the service and has scanned our library. But when I download the app to access OUR library, it wants me to pay and scan in everything again! Why do I need to pay $20 and then scan for both of us to access the same information! You need a household option!
- [R100] Family Sharing Feature Need: The app should be configured to better support libraries of families
- [R160] Synch books disappeared: I made a list of 89 books. After Synch, the list is disappeared.
- [R165] Comparability: I’m a little disappointed that it’s not compatible with my MacBook Pro. I would have thought it would work seamless between my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro.
- [R153] Needy app.: This app kept asking for me to submit a review when I was trying to use it. It was annoying. One star.
- [R241] Annoying pop up: I don’t like leaving reviews for apps, this app is making me.
- [R244] I’d give it a five but: I am continually interrupted by This nonsense.
- [R6] Great App: I definitely would recommend this app for anyone looking to catalog their books and track their collections. My only complaint would be that I have to manually create and add books to the “series” filter. This can be frustrating when you have large book series or a lot of different series. It would be nice if it would automatically gather this information online and create them for you.
- [R25] Love it! But have request for change 🤍: I have been using this for years and absolutely love it!! So many awesome features and easy to use! I do ask for 2 things to be changed/updated - 1. Please add the ability to search by personal tags 2. Please add multiple tag categories that can be personalized - for example, I would love to have Topic Tags, Person Tags, Timeframe Tags so that I can go th
- [R34] Needs a few more features to be perfect: Can you please add a statistic for “total money spent”, and can you PLEASE allow more than one genre to be added to each book and autofilled online, these features are in the “bookshelf” app but I love the list view and menu customization in this app way better so if these features were available then this app would be 10000% PERFECT. PLEASE!
- [R51] The best book tracker on the market!: I’ve been using this for a few years now and I love it. It’s easy to use, you can add as many custom specifics about each book that you want. The only thing I wish they’d add is a way to track the series, so you know which series you have all the books for or how many books you might be missing. But as a book collector, it’s a great app! Highly recommend!
- [R11] Confused: I do love this app, I paid the $10 for a lifetime membership. It’s not correct on which month I read the books in. It stopped editing in April
- [R126] AVOID!!! DELETES ADDED BOOKS: I have complained about this for years and it continues to happen. I am meticulous with my books. Added the correct cover. Record the box. Add isbn numbers etc and over and over books I have added are just erased. I have over 1500 books but this app is worthless, the response from customer service does nothing… it seems like each update removes data. Looking elsewhe
- [R240] Passable at Best: Cons to this app are that it won’t have a lot of the books in the Amazon catalog, so they must be entered manually. The most annoying thing about this app is that it crashes about half the time when you’re manually entering or updating a book’s information. This has been a constant issue regardless of which app version I’ve used or what device I’m using. They’ve never been able t
- [R277] Purchased upgrade but not working?: Purchased upgrade 2 weeks ago and still not working. Not able to upload any books.
- [R104] Have to pay to add more than 50 books: Have to pay if you want to put more than 50 books in there
