Magic vs MTG Life Counter App
MTG Life Counter App is the superior choice for tracking life totals and managing game states due to its reliability and extensive customization, while Magic struggles with critical login issues and a degraded search function.
Magic, the official companion app, is plagued by frequent login problems and a recent downgrade to its advanced card search, making it frustrating for many users. In contrast, MTG Life Counter App is highly praised for its robust and customizable life tracking features, including support for various game modes and commander damage, despite a few minor bugs.
Head to head
Pick Magic if you absolutely need the official companion app for event registration and integration with Wizards of the Coast services, and are willing to tolerate significant reliability issues and a degraded card search function R7.
Evidence note: The reviews for Magic are heavily skewed towards negative recent experiences, particularly concerning login failures and search functionality changes, which may impact its lifetime rating. MTG Life Counter App has a strong positive sentiment, with most negative reviews pointing to specific, often fixable, bugs rather than fundamental flaws.

- [R2] Magic Cards not in the system: Super convenient for deck building but I don’t understand why secret lair cards don’t show up in the database and some of the options in the advanced search don’t yield any results, such as rooms.
- [R3] Magic Issue with locator: Every time I open the app and I go to the locator, nothing appears. I have to close the app and immediately reopen the app, go to the locator, and only then Will shops and events show up. Can you fix this?
- [R6] Magic Restore Card Versions: Why in the world would you make the app have less functionality? I really miss seeing all versions of a card once I have looked it up. Bring that feature back. Also, in advance search allow users to quickly filter out digital only versions.
- [R9] Magic Why: Hey uh I agree with the other person. The old advanced search was better than this new one. Please bring it back. If you do I will edit this review and give 5 stars
- [R8] Magic Messy: Messy layout. Frequent redirects to websites, added to a mail list.. I just want to register for my local game.. why all the trickery?
- [R10] Magic wish is was better: navigation is clunky and unintuitive, frequently lags out loading matches etc. could be great with some focus on the tournament / play features.
- [R41] Magic Artifact- app, common 0️⃣: Works well for tracking games, and it’s essential for joining events at your local retailer, but it would be nice if it allowed you to tap & hold for life gain/loss rather than having to repeatedly tap for each point. And looking up cards is rather clunky, you can’t see both faces of dual-sided cards and the advanced search isn’t as easy as Scryfall or Archidekt.
- [R45] Magic New search is trash: The old search functions were a lot better and easier to find keywords. This new search function makes it really hard to narrow down your search. What used to give about 80 searches now makes it to where you HAVE to sift through 2000 cards.
- [R1] Magic I can’t log in: I’ve been using the app for years but it won’t let me log in now. I deleted and redownloaded the app and it is still broken
- [R4] Magic Recognize Your Union: Wizards companion app is not a great app. Crashes a bit but the real issue is wizards of the coast would rather pay for union busters rather than invest into their work force
- [R7] Magic Can’t Log In: I’m at the Regional Championship attempting to play side events and I cannot log in to the app. When I enter my username and password it very briefly loads and then nothing happens. This app ruined my day.
- [R14] Magic Overall good: Good for keeping track of games and events but too many ads
- [R42] Magic Badly designed app: Unfortunately, it’s mandatory to use this stupid app. It loses track of you, dropping you out at times. You also have to sign back in every couple of weeks.
- [R92] MTG Life Counter App Seems great and completely free with no ads?: Love all the features. There’s counters for everything. There’s even a little monarch token you can drag to whichever player has the special hat.
- [R95] MTG Life Counter App Best FREE commander app: My group used carbon for years until a friend insisted we try lotus. It’s free and NO ADS 😲 huge A+. All the features it provides, for the price you cannot beat it!
- [R13] Magic Won’t let me login: I’ll type in my email and password, tap the login button, nothing happens. I’ve reset my password too, nothing changes and I always get the same result. There was supposed to be an update in order to fix it, got the update and nothing happened, login still doesn’t work.
- [R49] Magic Advance Search Issues: App has completely nerfed the ability to use keyword search functions in the card advance search lookup. Additionally, app has literal ads for product but not a single way to report bugs or complaints directly to the development team.
- [R51] MTG Life Counter App Bug makes this app nearly unusable…kinda: Recently it stopped working well. Whenever someone takes commander damage, the app doesn’t visually show the damage, until more damage or health is gained, lost. So what happens, player takes commander damage. Then we have to add 1 and subtract 1 of normal damage to get it to update. It’s such an inconvenient thing where I’m exploring another App. Reinstall
- [R53] MTG Life Counter App New Bugs: Please update the app. It is great and very streamlined but there is a current issue with adding commander damage that doesn’t update until you change life totals manually.
- [R12] Magic Please bring back the old advanced search options: I would give five stars but you actually made the advanced search function substantially worse with this new update. I don't understand removing the 'or' option, let alone removing the option to have multiple things selected on any one box. The worst change you made was to the rules text box itself. There are too many card effects in general for u
- [R15] Magic New search function is subpar: I used to use this app daily. This recent update to the search functionality removed key features that allowed for custom search options. Now it's super basic and pretty useless. Bring back the custom search parameters.
- [R84] MTG Life Counter App Best Life App I’ve Found: I love that this app supports so many features such as plane chase and arch enemy. Tracking Commander damage is easy as pie, and I love the death quotes that pops up when a player lose this game. I’ve also use this app to track points for other games.
- [R90] MTG Life Counter App The Only Counter You Need: one of the best and most intuitive counters for any MTG game style you are playing! My group loved to use the commander counter settings, load our backgrounds with the commanders we are using, even toggle to different game modes if we are waiting something crazy for our game. This app packs so much and is ready-to-go for old and new MTG players alike!! This app needs to
- [R18] Magic Cant log in: Still cant log in due to issues with the app. I can log in to every other service just fine even after multiple password resets
- [R96] MTG Life Counter App Feature Rich and Elegantly Designed: Probably the only app I’ve found for an MTG life counter that is both fully featured and visually appealing. I don’t understand why this app is free.
- [R101] MTG Life Counter App Best life total app: Doesn’t get any better than this, absolutely no ads and the best layouts available.
