Magic: The Gathering Companion is essential for in-person tournament play, offering reliable life tracking and event management, but it is frequently criticized for its buggy card database, poor UI, and lack of historical data features.

Who it's for
This app is for Magic: The Gathering players who regularly participate in local or official tournaments and need a tool for event registration, pairings, and life tracking R9R13R84. It's also suitable for tournament organizers managing small to medium-sized events R94R55. Players primarily interested in a reliable card database, deck building, or comprehensive match history should skip this app R1R12.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew significantly negative (39.6% negative), which contrasts with the high lifetime rating of 4.69. This suggests a recent decline in user satisfaction, possibly due to new bugs or unaddressed long-standing issues. The developer notes mention a refreshed home screen and easier event access, but reviews still report login and event-joining issues, suggesting the update did not fully resolve these problems R4R7R15R56.

- [R9] Necessary for Tournament: If you want to play in the store you have to use this app. Sometimes a little glitchy on the tournament organizers end though especially for 2 Headed Giant.
- [R13] Came back to Mtg. This helped a lot.: So I stop playing MTG back in 2005 and decided that today is day to jump in FNM at local game store near work. They had me download this app before started FNM While playing the players told me how to use this app and keep track. Big help big time. I’m glad they had this app to help out and it’s free. I do recommend to download it and use for next MTG eve
- [R43] Companion: Very helpful when entering tournaments
- [R84] Good tool for any Magic Player: Finally a good official app to help with your games, both at home and at your favorite store!
- [R12] Great in person experience bad in app: App works great for local tournaments for reporting keeping life and checking standings. Unfortunately you can’t go back to check standings once TO closed tournament which is minor but would be nice. Major problem is double face cards just are not in database. Even if you want to see front side it sometimes has issues but the back sides just don’t work at all
- [R79] Actually good: I mostly use this as a life counter and it’s great. They have some small features that really make a difference. Tracking commander damage, floating mana, infect, etc. is just one swipe away. Most other apps have a really clunky process to get to these features but it’s quite smooth in the companion app. When you subtract life, the screen shows another number that counts up which ma
- [R86] Worth the wait: This app tracks a ton of things no other app I’ve seen tracks. It can track life, of course, but also tracks commander damage, poison counters, energy, commander tax, the amount of mana of each type in your mana pool, and even your storm count. Combine that with helping make tournament life easier, this app is totally worth it. All that work they put it is much appreciated.
- [R87] Magic Companion: I been playing with the life counter for for every format absolutely gold Amazing. Gain life top mid lose life button mid. Easy for commander damage and poison looks good very happy. Can’t wait for a tcg player addon or articles addon the future bright.
- [R94] Useful for tourneys but tricky to navigate: The Magic: The Gathering Companion is a mobile app which helps its users host and/or join local Magic: The Gathering gaming events in various formats, from one-on-one Standard duels to battle-royale Commander matches. For players, this app is useful for entering tournaments and tracking life points during matches. For hosts, this app is useful for mana
- [R55] Helpful app but…: The code generator is awesome, but other UI work is needed such as removing events you are hosting easily and giving you aggregation capabilities. Also, a “judge” nomination would be nice, so they can go in and modify results, issue warnings, etc. Oh, and the life tracker should be linked to the results/score for integrated result submission.
- [R6] I have enjoyed it: Super simple and user friendly to have it all in one place
- [R89] Great For Any Magic Fan: This is amazing if your a Veteran at the game or a Beginner. Provides easy score keeping during events or releases. 10/10
- [R1] Good enough: The app is good enough. There have been several glitches that I have experienced, but it is overall a good app. When looking at cards in the cards tab, it straight up doesn’t show cards with adventures, double faced cards, or cards that flip.
- [R19] Double Sided Cards: When viewing double-sided cards, you are unable to see the back side. Please fix. Makes helping a new player build a werewolf deck impossible.
- [R10] Latest update broke Card Database: I’m sure many people have multiple reasons for downloading this app, but for me it’s easy accessibility to the expansive Magic: the Gathering card database. I downloaded the latest update, hoping they would fix a few issues. Most notably, in my case at least, is that you can’t flip over a transform card in the app, which is something you can do on their website a
- [R7] Very Unreliable, wish there were better features for match and event history: The app is very unreliable. It will frequently lose the context that I am in an event, and I must rejoin most rounds before I can see pairings. It wouldn’t take very much investment to track historical data about matches and games played. Event Date, Location, Format, Record each round and Name of each opponent. You co
- [R11] Make it better: Can’t manual enter entrants if tournament crashes. Constantly buggy. Hasbro worth a billion but still can’t make a decent product.
- [R32] App/Server issues: Stopped working during local store neon dynasty prerelease events. Please fix stability issues
- [R33] The app breaking lost me my prize packs: I like the apps visuals and the features, however the apps instability caused an entire lgs prerelease to shut down after the second round. Sucked.
- [R4] Awful ui: Hard to believe apps in the 20s can be this bad. It also logs you out before every event and won’t let you log back in. Apps useless tbh
- [R5] This is the most frustrating app I have ever had to endure: You are horrible get some real programmers
- [R15] Can’t log back in: That’s why I give it 4 not 5
- [R22] Still feels like beta: Weird navigation issues. Two headed giant event didn’t set life counters to 30 by default.
- [R17] Good, but missing key feature: I use this app to play tournaments at my local game store. It’s nice to see the standings updated every round, but they go away so quickly. You are not able to view the standings the next day or ever again. I want to see how I did the past few times that I played. Also, I got second place at my local game store which meant I got a free entry the next time, but I went
- [R23] Pretty good but could use some improvements: As above, but I wish I could see old standings
- [R48] Companion App; room for improvement: The app keeps a record of tournament gameplay only for a very brief period before erasing it (seemingly under 24 hours), and if you navigate away from the score page after a tournament is complete it is impossible to return to the page. I’d say the app would be infinitely more valuable if you were able to access tournament records to track your progress and the
- [R34] Needs work: 1. Need a way to delete tournaments from the list. 2. Need a way to un-register from events. 3. 2HG just needs work. Ran into an issue where the client both recognized a team as a team, and said they weren’t on a team. The team could not be dissolved, as there is no option to do so, and the client could not dissolve a team. It just kept telling the players to dissolve the team and re
- [R56] Can’t even register an account: No matter what I do with whichever email I try to sign up with I am met with an error it’s beyond annoying Seinfeld I can’t even join events properly and always have to go as a guest.
- [R62] Broken app: The app wouldn’t let me register, so I registered on the website. And now the app won’t accept my valid credentials.
- [R74] App is krap: Unable to login with my old or new Wizards account. Unable to create a new account within App - dob selector is stuck on today’s date 1-20-21. I had to select 1-20-21 as my dob (which it is not) and pressed continue and app crashed.
- [R18] Can’t view dual faced cards: Cannot view dual faced cards. When clicking on one, there is nothing where the image would normally be. On the android version, this works just fine.
- [R8] Would be good: Could be good if there was a save search option or a better way to keep decks together better.
- [R44] Okay but could use a few more features.: I Like the app. But if it had a timer and could keep track of my progress across tournaments, it would be a lot better.
- [R59] Great All Around: One of the better / best life trackers available. The card search functions just as well as the online version. And it’s free.
