Head to head
Pick Steer Clear® if you are a new driver specifically looking for educational modules and quizzes to review driving information, and if your primary motivation is to potentially receive an insurance discount, provided you are willing to tolerate significant inaccuracies in driving score tracking and potential app glitches R2R11R14R24.
Pick Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen if you are a parent or family member seeking a reliable app for accurate live location tracking, detailed driving behavior monitoring (speeding, phone use, crash detection), and driving logs for teen drivers, and you are willing to pay for a subscription for these features and responsive customer support R62R84.
Evidence note: Steer Clear® has a much larger number of reviews, but a significant portion of them are negative, focusing on the app's core functionality (driving accuracy). Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen has fewer reviews, but a higher proportion are positive, particularly regarding its tracking and safety features. The free-vs-paid asymmetry is relevant for OtoZen, as negative reviews often stem from features becoming paid-only after a trial, which is common for apps offering advanced services.

- [R1] Steer Clear® Terrible tracking: This app said I had not 1, but 4 “rapid acceleration events” while I was in the middle of getting off a highway while my foot was on the brakes (because I’m getting off of the highway). Anyways this app doesn’t help you unless you’re not on the highway because the tracking is so stupid and sensitive.
- [R3] Steer Clear® Useful but sensitive: This is useful for new drivers however it can rate driving with too much scrutiny with acceleration, braking and turning. My son was marked down for sharp turning into our driveway.
- [R8] Steer Clear® Driving in itself was a hassle: I drive to school every day but it’s not registering anything at all every time that I do it… I thought I needed to get the gps my mom has in her car but I see that wasn’t the case and now I’m truly lost on what the issue is…
- [R10] Steer Clear® The most problematic app I’ve ever owned: I have no doubt that this app was made to make you pay more for insurance. The mere act of rotating your phone while it is active sets off multiple different. Driving occurrences absolutely tanking your score. It is almost impossible to get a perfect score and while doable is not made hard by the act and skill that comes with driving but having to juggle t
- [R2] Steer Clear® Learning: Helpful tips and tricks
- [R4] Steer Clear® Not helpful: Modules asked question that can go either way
- [R5] Steer Clear® hard to operate, but easy to understand: I mostly never used this while driving that was because apparently you have to manually start your driving segment for a complicated step process. there’s also side lessons you can do to make sure you can get proper claim values, but one of them added a photo of a tornado on it and they never bring up a tornado anywhere in the tutorials.
- [R11] Steer Clear® Well done training: Thought intended for new drivers, good reminders for experienced drivers.
- [R13] Steer Clear® Pointless: Most useless app EVER. How am I supposed to remember to log my hours? It doesn’t make sense
- [R14] Steer Clear® Awesome!: Very easy to navigate and understand topics.
- [R15] Steer Clear® Doesn’t score accurately: The testing stuff was good, but it got complicated when it came to driving. I often had several events of rapid acceleration and sharp cornering, but I live on a mountain - I can’t help that. It’s also extremely difficult when calibrating. Again, you need to be going dead straight or hold the phone as steady as possible. It’s taken 5-10 minutes off my drive time almost ev
- [R63] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Like it: I really like OtoZen but sometimes real time locations isn’t updated.
- [R64] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Extremely lacking, puts privacy over safety: Teen can inactivate the app with no notification, created claims protecting privacy? I guess they can privately speed and look at their phone, but allow supervision on their terms. No option to change “role”, I’m the “supervising passenger” even if I’m driving alone. Same when a driver is actually the passenger. So my individual driving scores are talli
- [R68] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Good for Trip Updates: I use OtoZen to follow trip updates when someone in my family is driving. It helps me see where they are, when they may arrive, and if the trip is going normally. The app saves a lot of back-and-forth messages and makes daily coordination easier. Overall, it’s been a good experience.
- [R69] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Ups and downs: It’s a good concept and great when it works, but it always disconnects from my son’s phone, which defeats the purpose of being able to locate him in a time of need.
- [R24] Steer Clear® Saves money but is a hassle.: Giving it 3 stars because it saves you a decent bit on the auto insurance with having this program completed. But this app has honestly been such a head ache and hassle. It doesn’t monitor your driving habits accurately, you can drive like someone’s grandma and it’s going to tell you that you made a score of 50 because of accelerating, braking too hard and Cornering.
- [R32] Steer Clear® Money: Money
- [R37] Steer Clear® Propaganda!: This is a scam so that StateFarm can make more money by forcing you to get their app. It is big insurance propaganda don’t fall for it!
- [R51] Steer Clear® Inaccurate: The app kept recording in accurately and when trying to get help through customer service, no one knew how to help.
- [R102] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Great app: Always great support!
- [R106] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Absolute game changer: Found this app after my son was caught going wayyyyy too fast on the freeway. It tracks his speed and phone use effectively. The driving score is a great metric. And we compete to see who gets higher scores between the two of us! When I have reported incorrect MPH on routes, the OtoZen support staff is very responsive in correcting it. They are really great.
- [R108] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Good Program: Some false alarms but overall is user friendly. Fast responses from customer service.
- [R75] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen 5 Stars: It’s so helpful! It tells you the exact areas where you could improve, and has different modes for driver, rider, supervising rider, & student driver. I’ve used both the driver and rider settings, and both were very helpful.
- [R79] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Best I’ve found: Life 360 is way off on top speed accuracy this one’s off but pretty close to accurate
- [R82] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Speed alerts actually help a lot: I didn’t think I’d use this feature much at first, but the real time speeding alert is actually really useful. The beep goes off right when you cross the limit, so it kind of reminds you instantly to slow down. What I like even more is that I get notified if my son is speeding. I don’t have to keep calling or checking, I just get an alert if something’s not right
- [R84] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Very helpful driving log feature: I’ve been using OtoZen mainly for its driving log feature, and it’s been surprisingly useful. It automatically tracks trips and shows clear details, which helps me keep an eye on my driving habits. I also like how I can check my son’s driving log and know where and how he’s been driving. It gives me extra confidence without needing to constantly ask him. The app
- [R62] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Excellent.: Very in-depth analyses on all aspects. Well worth the money.
- [R66] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Good for Some Uses: It was good at first. However, all the things I liked about it went away so I have to pay for it to get it all back. The only thing I can do is track my hours, but even then I can’t see where I went. I mean, the only thing I use it for is to keep track of my hours while I have my permit, but I don’t understand why safety features cost over $100 a month.
- [R67] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Not my favorite: It’s really weird to me how it cuts off visibility to drives even if a family member pays for it. Anyway I think paying for it is kinda useless if it doesn’t allow people to actually use it
- [R74] Family Life Tracker360 OtoZen Karen: Very pleased w the app until it required updates after a month. So disappointed that fees were required to continue getting original plan. Switched to another app.
