Steer Clear® vs OnMyWay
Steer Clear® is the better choice for new drivers seeking to improve their habits and potentially reduce insurance costs, despite its sensitivity, while OnMyWay is not recommended due to widespread reports of scam-like reward redemption issues and app malfunctions.
Steer Clear® aims to help new drivers improve their skills and offers potential insurance savings, though many users find its tracking overly sensitive. OnMyWay promises rewards for safe driving but is plagued by complaints of non-functional rewards, referral scams, and app instability, making it a risky choice.
Head to head
Evidence note: Reviews for OnMyWay are heavily skewed towards negative experiences regarding reward redemption and app functionality, with many positive reviews appearing generic and focused solely on travel rewards, potentially indicating a free-vs-paid asymmetry where the 'free' app generates frustration from unfulfilled promises.

- [R1] Steer Clear® Terrible tracking: This app said I had not 1, but 4 “rapid acceleration events” while I was in the middle of getting off a highway while my foot was on the brakes (because I’m getting off of the highway). Anyways this app doesn’t help you unless you’re not on the highway because the tracking is so stupid and sensitive.
- [R2] Steer Clear® Learning: Helpful tips and tricks
- [R3] Steer Clear® Useful but sensitive: This is useful for new drivers however it can rate driving with too much scrutiny with acceleration, braking and turning. My son was marked down for sharp turning into our driveway.
- [R6] Steer Clear® Driving scores inaccurate: Getting an accurate score is impossible when any small movement of the phone gets marked for something
- [R5] Steer Clear® hard to operate, but easy to understand: I mostly never used this while driving that was because apparently you have to manually start your driving segment for a complicated step process. there’s also side lessons you can do to make sure you can get proper claim values, but one of them added a photo of a tornado on it and they never bring up a tornado anywhere in the tutorials.
- [R8] Steer Clear® Driving in itself was a hassle: I drive to school every day but it’s not registering anything at all every time that I do it… I thought I needed to get the gps my mom has in her car but I see that wasn’t the case and now I’m truly lost on what the issue is…
- [R14] Steer Clear® Awesome!: Very easy to navigate and understand topics.
- [R17] Steer Clear® Very easy to use: This app is easy to use, is visually appealing, and does a good job of doing what it’s meant to do
- [R9] Steer Clear® Could improve: It would be nice if they told you what you get point deducted for even though you didn’t have a event during your trip
- [R10] Steer Clear® The most problematic app I’ve ever owned: I have no doubt that this app was made to make you pay more for insurance. The mere act of rotating your phone while it is active sets off multiple different. Driving occurrences absolutely tanking your score. It is almost impossible to get a perfect score and while doable is not made hard by the act and skill that comes with driving but having to juggle t
- [R21] Steer Clear® Inaccurate: As a father of a teen I appreciate that this app helps student drivers receive cheaper insurance and promotes safety but I would like to make some points. First, the app doesn’t really communicate steps very well. In order to watch the videos you practically have to figure out where they are, instead of saying “watch video modules here”, and so on, you’re basically pushing buttons. Sec
- [R51] Steer Clear® Inaccurate: The app kept recording in accurately and when trying to get help through customer service, no one knew how to help.
- [R61] OnMyWay Transparency: This is for people who want to know what it’s about before downloading. The app is free to download and to use. You get fake money for driving without using your phone. You can use that fake money on spin-to-win games or “savings cards” for hotels/travel. The ratio is 5 to 1 (i.e. $100 hotel card for $500 fake dollars). The big prizes are literally impossible to win. There’s supposed
- [R66] OnMyWay Referrals: App is cool and all but what does referral benefit us if I’ve referred people and I don’t get paid
- [R24] Steer Clear® Saves money but is a hassle.: Giving it 3 stars because it saves you a decent bit on the auto insurance with having this program completed. But this app has honestly been such a head ache and hassle. It doesn’t monitor your driving habits accurately, you can drive like someone’s grandma and it’s going to tell you that you made a score of 50 because of accelerating, braking too hard and Cornering.
- [R32] Steer Clear® Money: Money
- [R37] Steer Clear® Propaganda!: This is a scam so that StateFarm can make more money by forcing you to get their app. It is big insurance propaganda don’t fall for it!
- [R56] Steer Clear® Works: I used the app and it saved me money on insurance. I’m a bit upset with the nitpicking so it’s not 5 stars but good overall
- [R67] OnMyWay Prizes are BS: So you can spend $10 of your ON MY WAY dollars on a chance to win 5 million dollars, A Range Rover and cash, 1 million dollars, or a Porsche and $200k. If you match the correct six numbers you win that prize. Problem is they don’t tell you what the six numbers you have to match are. I guess you just have to take their word for it. lol. They also don’t give the odds of winning said
- [R75] OnMyWay Their rewards are a scam tactic to get your information: I got the $100 hotel option. It doesn’t work.
- [R77] OnMyWay Waste of an App: This is one of the worst apps I have used in terms of general functionality and transparency about what customers actually get out of it. The incentive programs are extremely misleading and often cost more money to use than the reward is worth. At one point I placed all of my earned rewards into the Bitcoin option they were promoting. Eventually it simply disappeared and the rewa
- [R91] OnMyWay Scam: When you redeem the rewards it allows you to them will tell you that it’s not valid every time after you set up he account to use the rewards you redeemed, then they will blame the 3rd party website that they make you use to redeem the travel rewards. A huge issue and a huge waste of time, also it redeemed twice on my rewards then told me I wasn’t allow to redeem the same reward in a 12 mont
