CharmPass vs MarcMap
CharmPass is the better choice for purchasing and managing transit tickets, despite its significant technical glitches, while MarcMap is a niche app for real-time train tracking but suffers from inaccuracy and usability issues.
CharmPass is a widely used app for purchasing and managing MTA tickets, praised for its convenience but heavily criticized for frequent bugs and reliability issues. MarcMap, a much smaller app, aims to provide real-time MARC train tracking but struggles with accuracy and a confusing interface.
Head to head
You primarily need to purchase and manage MTA, MARC, or Commuter Bus tickets digitally and value the convenience of mobile ticketing over occasional technical frustrations R2R8. You are a student who can benefit from discounted fares R17.
You are a MARC train commuter whose absolute priority is to attempt to track the real-time GPS location of your train, and you are willing to tolerate significant inaccuracies and usability challenges .
Evidence note: CharmPass has a significantly larger number of reviews, providing a more comprehensive view of user experiences across all dimensions. MarcMap has very few reviews, leading to thinner evidence, particularly regarding support and the value of its in-app purchases.

- [R2] CharmPass CharmPass: Quick & easy so convenient. I love the MTA!
- [R9] CharmPass Disappointed: This app does not offer Senior/Disabled fare option. It only has mobility options for one trip not disabled daily passes so seniors are forced to carry cash in this city…
- [R10] CharmPass Poor screen design: It is too confusing looking at current tickets, stored tickets, past used tickets to quickly get to the ticket you need.
- [R11] CharmPass Good: This is very fast and efficient to buy ticket online
- [R8] CharmPass The app!!: This is my first time catching the bus in over nine years. My coworkers told me I should download the app. I never knew this app existed. It is so easy to use and always on point with arrival times. It makes catching the bus and the train so much easier. I think I’ll put off buying that new car for a while.😇
- [R26] CharmPass Ronnie’s Review: Love this app, makes things so much easier!
- [R1] CharmPass Quick to charge card, no support after.: So I downloaded and installed this app for a quick trip to DC. I accidentally clicked the outgoing ticket and it activated it with no way to deactivate it. Call the support number, sent an email, snd no one got back to me. So it seems I would have to buy another ticket. It was only 13 bucks but still, it’s not right. Deleting it from my phone now.
- [R3] CharmPass Works 70% of the Time: Overall, it works okay as a way but is love if the MTA could join SmartTrip from WMATA. I’m a MARC commuter. MTA instructs riders to open and activate tickets as the vehicle approaches however there are regular instances when the app doesn’t open and reports an internet connection is not available despite other internet enabled apps being able to be used.
- [R4] CharmPass Terrible app: There’s an unknown error that’s not letting me access the app.
- [R7] CharmPass Sucks: Glitchy and doesn’t work like everything else in Maryland
- [R16] CharmPass Misleading purchase page: After I thought I had made a purchase successfully, when I returned to the app later it brought me to the purchase page with the same cart. I assumed the purchase hadn’t gone through so purchased tickets again. Turns out the purchase did go through and now I have multiple tickets I do not need and will not be able to use.
- [R17] CharmPass So considerate and community forward: Honestly taking the train was always anxiety inducing but now that the Marc has implemented student 50%off tickets I feel much better about train tickets. It’s so helpful as a college student especially in this tough economy! Ty Marc
- [R23] CharmPass Cheated: I purchased a three day pass and only got two days. I was charged for three day on the 9th of March and the pass expired on the 11th of March at 2:59am.
- [R53] CharmPass Steals money: Deletes your tickets as soon as you buy them or your saved tickets disappear. The support is no help and basically says they can’t help and steal your money.
- [R15] CharmPass 1 complaint, sorry not sorry: There’s been too many times where I’ll be watching the arriving bus for work(22), and the app will go to 0 minutes and then go back up some minutes. I depend on the accuracy of this app to get me to and from work on time. Given this app is more accurate than my google maps, it’s not perfect yet. I’d appreciate if this issue is fixed pronto.
- [R27] CharmPass Location issues: Always saying it’s coming in a certain but don’t also make it later then what it is
- [R47] CharmPass Bogus: This app is bogus at times. It says that a particular bus is 4 minutes away but in fact it’s 30 plus minutes away and at times it’s a longer wait time than that. I have seen 2 buses leave one after the other while the app says only one is tracking. This issue needs to be addressed so that elderly passengers and myself and others won’t have to be in extreme elements for a long time.
- [R34] CharmPass Smooth riding: Loving the convenience of the app. Just wondering when there’s going to be a discounted pass for seniors
- [R18] CharmPass Expires before trip is over…: Everything about the app is great, EXCEPT I am always stopped while boarding the second train in my journey because the app shows an expired ticket after two hours. It seems this could be fixed relatively easily. It is an inconvenience to have to explain myself every time, and I’m just waiting for the day when a conductor makes me buy a new ticket…
