TaxCaddy vs H&R Block Tax Prep
H&R Block Tax Prep is the better choice for most users due to its broader functionality for direct tax filing and generally more positive user experience, despite some complaints about pricing and upsells.
TaxCaddy serves as a document collection and communication platform for tax professionals, while H&R Block Tax Prep is a direct tax filing application for individuals. H&R Block offers a more complete self-service tax preparation experience, though some users express frustration with its pricing model and occasional bugs.
Head to head
You are a client whose CPA specifically requests you use TaxCaddy for document submission and communication, and you need a secure platform for that purpose R14R17.
You want a self-service app to prepare and file your federal and state tax returns, especially if your tax situation is relatively simple and you appreciate a guided, step-by-step process R68.
Evidence note: TaxCaddy's reviews are heavily skewed towards its functionality as a document portal for CPAs, not a direct tax filing solution, which limits direct comparison on some dimensions with H&R Block Tax Prep.

- [R7] TaxCaddy Won’t work with MFA: The automatic download feature won’t work due to MFA. Also you can’t upload documents directly from financial institutions. The documents must be externally downloaded then uploaded to TaxCaddy.
- [R20] TaxCaddy Cumbersome: This is a cumbersome program to upload to. I scan to .jpg and it doesn’t take it not .png.
- [R22] TaxCaddy Upload Documents Limited: Only allows pdf and xls
- [R31] TaxCaddy Worst ever: Every time I tried to upload something the app wouldn’t let me know it was uploaded so I had to upload it again then I ended up uploading the same thing several times. Also, I don’t see my tax return in the app. I don’t see my invoice in the app I don’t see my tax payments in the app. I’m not sure what this app is good for.
- [R1] TaxCaddy Horrible app: Terrible on an iPad. Absolutely awful.
- [R5] TaxCaddy Thank you: Fast and simple.
- [R6] TaxCaddy Ease of Use: I do not think this program is intuitive
- [R10] TaxCaddy Don’t like: Takes too much time and the app is clumsy
- [R3] TaxCaddy Uploaded material lost before saved.: I was uploading multiple documents by photos and when updating the tax year, the uploaded material “vanished,” going to the bottom of my iPad screen. I am unable to retrieve it. Help!
- [R8] TaxCaddy Pretty good: It keeps opening to tax year 2022, so each time I have to remember to change to the current year. Then when looking at documents I uploaded, it gets stuck and there is no way to go back and see the document list. Which is a challenge if I may have accidentally uploaded the same doc twice, or failed to upload one.
- [R9] TaxCaddy Still buggy after all these years…..: While better than a couple of years ago, this thing still crashes unexpectedly, does not play well with financial companies (banks, brokerages) and freezes when least expected. Hoping that the powers that be will continue working on it as this could be awesome if it worked like expected.
- [R15] TaxCaddy Okay app but not great: I first used the app last year. The learning curve was not too steep and I quickly got my information uploaded for me tax preparer with only little back a forth. But this year it’s been a bit of a different picture. I made sure that the default tax year was set to the current tax year, but the program does not consistently use the default year. So data and messages kept g
- [R4] TaxCaddy Awful Software: My financial advisor wants me to use this but so far it’s unusable. I can’t find a major institution like fidelity and the autofill passwords function doesn’t work. Very frustrating.
- [R13] TaxCaddy Terrible: Not intuitive. Poor scanning quality and after fighting with it to get all of my documents uploaded my accountant could not see them. Absolutely begging me to “try smart links” at every turn. What’s a smart link? No explanation offered. Wish I could give zero stars.
- [R56] TaxCaddy Great idea consumers allowed to invite their tax professionals rather than other way around: My CPA does not use this, however I want a better way to communicate with him and track and make irs payments. I found this on the App Store and it looks like it would be a huge help for me. However this app requires him to initiate us using this. He must be the one to first have an account and invite me.
- [R61] H&R Block Tax Prep TRASH - No live support & NOW CHARGES: Always files with H&R Block but now it is forcing the deluxe option automatically without any way of changing . AI chat assistant is unhelpful and totally useless . The automated options when you call are ALSO useless ,’keeps telling you they don’t understand and when you get through it tells you the hours, which is still operational at the time of the call b
- [R16] TaxCaddy Bugs: Many bugs logging in. Tech support is not helping much.
- [R18] TaxCaddy Buggy: Better than what my CPA previously used, but buggy. The app “live chat” doesn’t work (sent messages just disappear). I tried to add a payment account and TaxCaddy sent the verification deposits but lost the record of the bank account so there was nowhere to enter the amounts later. And I couldn’t find anywhere to send this feedback / report bugs to TaxCaddy, hence the review (maybe they rea
- [R50] TaxCaddy Poor customer support: The help numbers DONOT work. Messages and chats are very limited, inaccurate responses and no resolution
- [R14] TaxCaddy Tax Caddy, I was skeptical at first: My accountant emailed the request to download the mobile app for TaxCaddy to help me organize my taxes on time to file April 15. I was skeptical at first, but after using it just a few times, and for a few hours I found it immensely helpful, easy to learn, and apparently, quite confidential and encrypted. I’m not the greatest record keeper, but with prompts f
- [R17] TaxCaddy Great for working my CPA and a good way to pay IRS: O am finding the app and the service it represents to be very useful. Makes tax season much less hectic.
- [R33] TaxCaddy TaxCaddy App: Ok but I don’t see where you are able to submit your completed information to accountant to prepare actual tax return.
- [R68] H&R Block Tax Prep 2025 Tax Filing: This app is awesome!! You can actually file for free or choose to get pro help and pay a low amount for help. Best tax filing app!! Makes taxes so much easier!!
- [R72] H&R Block Tax Prep Free Filing and Easy Filing: Very easy to use online. Only took an hour or so for my simple retirement situation. I ponyed up the $34 to import data from last year to make it easier and hopefully more accurate. Thanks H&R!
- [R75] H&R Block Tax Prep They try to trick you but if you are careful, it is FREE: I had many ads for paid services populate while filing. You have to be careful and read before checking boxes and clicking next, they try to trick you but if you are careful, it will be free. I subtracted one star for sneaky antics and another star for terrible auto-fill… I would have been better off manually entering all data. They get
