Genies & Gems vs Candy Crush Saga
Candy Crush Saga offers a more polished and consistently updated experience, despite its own issues with ads and monetization, making it the slightly better choice for a long-term match-3 game.
Both Genies & Gems and Candy Crush Saga are popular free-to-play match-3 games with in-app purchases, but recent updates have introduced significant user frustration regarding excessive ads, game stability, and perceived pay-to-win mechanics. Candy Crush Saga, with its larger user base and more frequent updates, appears to manage these issues slightly better, though neither is without fault.
Head to head
You prefer a match-3 game with a storyline and characters, and you are willing to tolerate frequent ads and potential technical issues for a game that some find captivating and nostalgic .
You are looking for a highly addictive and challenging match-3 game with a massive number of levels and a large community, and you can overlook the aggressive monetization and frequent pop-ups .
Evidence note: Both apps have a high lifetime rating, but recent reviews for both are heavily skewed negative, primarily due to excessive ads and stability issues. The free-to-play nature means much of the negativity stems from users frustrated by limitations and monetization pushes, rather than core gameplay. Candy Crush Saga has a significantly larger number of ratings, suggesting a broader user base and potentially more diverse feedback, but also a larger target for complaints.

- [R4] Genies & Gems Levels are Recycled: I can’t tell you how many levels I have played over and over again under the guise that it’s a new level. I am currently on level 9703 and I have played that level at least 3 times before. Why not just say you’ve reached the end of the game (like they used to) instead of making it appear like new levels are being added when it actually isn’t. That’s deceitful.
- [R5] Genies & Gems More levels?: I love this game and have been playing it for years. I am almost at level 9000 but it seems the last 1000 or so are just repeating levels every 100 or so. None of the levels I have played recently are new. All just repeats of levels I’ve already beat.
- [R12] Genies & Gems Elite Level: After years of playing this game, I was so excited as I approached level 10,000. All of a sudden I get a message that I moved to an elite level without a y explanation of whAt this is and now I am at all these random lower levels. Haven't you stopped creating higher levels?
- [R13] Genies & Gems Lots of cheating going on: This game cheats a lot with butterflies. Ex: You have one more tile to uncover and butterflies won’t go directly there for the win they’ll go somewhere else not needed.
- [R1] Genies & Gems Level 3,405: Kalshi ad is too long. The moment I see it, I leave genies & gems. Most times I can’t get my spin after a Kalshi ad anyway…. Kalshi strikes again! After completing the ad which is entirely too long I did not receive my spin. What a ripoff.
- [R2] Genies & Gems Used to be fun: Used to play this a lot. Now there’s an ad after each goal is reached. I close out and reopen. Pain. Now I recall why I stopped playing game. Too many ads. Will not purchase to avoid ads. No game is worth it.
- [R7] Genies & Gems Suddenly an obnoxious number of ads: I played this game for a week. Suddenly, there is an obnoxious number of ads before EACH replay of a level. So I deleted the app.
- [R18] Genies & Gems Expensive game: As the levels get harder an average gamer must use up help and the help is too expensive. I like the game, got addicted pretty quickly but reached a point where I either play the same level repeatedly. I could easily spend $100 or more to keep going and I choose not to.
- [R6] Genies & Gems So close, but so far...: It’s fun and all, but there have been too many times where the gems freeze, gems don’t fill up open spaces, or the butterflies are completely useless. The levels are passable but this constantly happening makes your game increasingly difficult and frustrating. I find myself playing less and less when I really enjoyed it in the beginning.
- [R10] Genies & Gems Regularly locks up: Entertaining but far too often it locks up, usually just as I’m close to completing a level, requiring force-quitting the game which restarts the level losing all progress. Really frustrating.
- [R21] Genies & Gems Game play speed: Game play has been sped up by 10x. The graphics move way too fast. It’s not as enjoyable. Put it back the way it was please
- [R22] Genies & Gems Troubled game and more ads now: Ever since the iOS 26.0.1 update, the game has been lagging and slower. I have to delete and then go back and still lagging. Please fix. Only game I play and I want to keep at it.
- [R24] Genies & Gems I like this game..HOWEVER..: Not sure why they took the landscape view away from this game. I don’t like portrait games at all. Go back to landscape and let the consumer choose!
- [R25] Genies & Gems Back to running slow: New update slowed the game down to a crawl.
- [R27] Genies & Gems Was my favorite game: Downloaded the updated version and the screen goes black on about every other ad and...nothing. I have to leave the game and come back to it after some time has passed. Ready to delete it... I am updating my review. I really enjoy this game but... the games crashes on ads constantly. I see that the small number of coins I accumulated have apparently been stolen. I have encoun
- [R23] Genies & Gems great game: I’m really enjoying the game I haven’t been playing very long my only issue is when you click on to use your coins on a level it doesn’t tell you how many you have that would be helpful thanks magic gems
- [R52] Genies & Gems Interesting Game, but not interesting enough to deplete my savings: There are $$ grubbing games and then there are $$ GRUBBING games! No way to earn coins in the game (at least through level 100), must purchase to continue playing. Too many other similar match 3 games out there.
- [R63] Candy Crush Saga El stinky but good.: Very nice character design , good to pass time, but I will always hate the constant push for micro transactions and paywalls- “watch an ad to replay!” Its annoying it’s a shame that candy crush has succumbed to this level too
- [R40] Genies & Gems Too many ads: This game used to be entertaining, but now it is full of ads you can’t even skip. It is very annoying waiting 30 seconds or more every time you need to do anything. Not fun anymore.
- [R43] Genies & Gems Too many ads: This game has been so fun to play but it keeps adding more mandatory ads. It used to be the ads gave some rewards but now it’s just to move to the next level.
- [R50] Genies & Gems Keeps Freezing: I love the game and the new look. I’m on level 2948 and it keeps freezing. I hope this problem gets fixed so I can continue to the next level. I am having more problems with Genies and Gems. I click on the game and it doesn’t come up . Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. Please fix this bug.
- [R73] Candy Crush Saga Bad game: Game keeps crashing when winning. Wants more money. Rip off.
- [R64] Candy Crush Saga Scam: Game is a literal scam. When you get into the later levels (200s) they literally make it impossible to win by giving you a very small amount of turns and you can’t beat the level without using power ups and the sort. With that comes YOU spending money to either have enough gold for more turns or just buying a power up pack. Absolute scam.
- [R82] Candy Crush Saga Level 18587 BORING AND STUPID: IMPOSSIBLE even with full boosts. I have played it dozens of times and can’t pass. THEY ARE FORCING YOU TO PURCHASE TO PLAY. SAD AND PATHETIC GAME. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
