Trailforks
Trailforks is highly regarded for its extensive trail maps and navigation features, especially for mountain biking, but recent updates and aggressive paywalling have made the free version nearly unusable and led to widespread frustration among long-time users.

While the paid Pro version is praised for its comprehensive features, the free version has become severely limited and plagued by persistent prompts to upgrade, leading to a significant decline in recent user satisfaction.

Who it's for
Trailforks is for mountain bikers and other trail users who need extensive, detailed maps and navigation, especially when exploring new areas R3R6R9. It is particularly useful for those willing to pay for a Pro subscription to access all features R19R53. It is NOT for users who expect full functionality from a free app R7R20, those who are easily frustrated by bugs and a clunky interface R12R17R45, or those who rely heavily on a stable Apple Watch app R222R233.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative, especially regarding the paywall and app stability, which contrasts with the high lifetime rating. This indicates a significant negative trajectory in user sentiment following recent changes and updates. Evidence for specific bugs (e.g., GPS issues, crashing) is strong and consistent across multiple reviews.

- [R3] Great App: I use this app anytime I ride. I like that I can open it up when I travel and see the local trails. The addition of pictures and videos on reviews is very helpful.
- [R6] New to the mt bike world: Been nice as a newbie to to be able to find trails in my skill range. Trailforks has done that for me
- [R8] Easy to use: I love the color coded trails and offline maps feature. Great app, makes it easy to navigate.
- [R9] Best mtb trail maps: When I got on Trailforks the sign in was easy and efficient. Using it is also really easy. One of my favorite features is looking at the photos of the trails to know how it looks. 6/5 stars top three best apps out there. Recommend fully.
- [R5] Great app, a little pushy about premium though: I have only ever used the free version, but it has a lot of great features. While all the trail details are not available offline, a general map is, which has saved me more than once. Overall great app, even in the free version
- [R1] I wish you could do more without the pro: Better than the other apps, but I wish you could do more without the pro and not pay a lot of money every single year but it’s right. The free ones are also good.
- [R19] Fantastic App: Well worth the money to subscribe in my opinion. Great app!
- [R53] Best Bike Trail App: The U.I. feels outdated and the app can be clunky at times, but it’s the best thing I’ve found for finding local trails. I do record through the Apple Watch version of the app and use the phone to guide me while on new trails. It’s very community driven for the information, which has positive and negatives. I do have a paid subscription.
- [R67] All the info you need at your fingertips: Can't hype this app enough. Incredible amounts of info. Having the ability to use it as a navigator during MTB rides is so useful when visiting new trails and areas. Great job.
- [R7] Pay to play: This app is entirely inaccessible without buying pro. Dont download this unless youve already spent the 60 dollars on traiforks pro
- [R10] Pro ads are crippling: This used to be the go-to app; the intrusive “buy pro now” ads make it unusable. I’m not opposed to buying apps (am an AllTrails Subscriber) but this feels obnoxious. Will delete instead.
- [R11] Pay to use: I can't even use it without it telling me to use my free trial
- [R15] It is with Great Sadness: It is with great sadness that I just deleted the Trail Forks app off of my phone. I have enough reoccurring monthly charges already and I don’t want another for switching to the Pro version. The free version is just a shadow of the former version. To bad.
- [R4] $54 a yr and the app doesn’t work: You would think when they charge you $54yr the app would actually work and not freeze up and the updates would fix that issue
- [R12] Force Closing: I don’t use this very often, and for some insane reason I pay for this thing. I was just trying to look at some trail centers in the app and it kept force closing. I also pay for Strava premium which I’ve already canceled, but my subscription runs through July. Don’t make me go back to them.
- [R45] Buggy: Shadow of its former self. The app was so much better with no bugs prior to them charging for the app. Now it’s constantly buggy with the discover and feed icons frozen in the middle of the screen or it closes unexpectedly. If you zoom in too closely, you can’t click on each riding zone which you could always do years ago without endless bugs and icons disappearing.
- [R499] Some issues: i had to reinstall it completely to fix crashing issues other than that it's always been good. hopefully it stays that way after being sold.
- [R14] Needs updated: This app is of course the go to trail reference but the other features like route creation and organization need their UI updated badly as they are almost useless in the app and only slightly more useable in the website. When pink bike owned it and the subscription was cheap, this was all understandable but now that Outside owns it, it seems like an update should happen.
- [R17] really bad route planner: i want to use this but its unusable using the app to make routes. also i used a computer with a mouse pad and its also awful. im not gonna go sit in a desk with a mouse. will try to use other apps instead…. this one is terrible
- [R52] Good map/Bad interface: Ride went fine, it followed my progress, but it didn't save easily, shows my ride in a weird spot, and just generally has a non-intuitive interface.
- [R222] Has potential, Needs better development.: Apple Watch app needs to provide confirmation of export to Strava. My activity didn’t even make it to Strava. Data wasn’t correct either. Has a long was to go before this app can complete with other trackers. WorkOutDoors app works much better. On the phone app, as of right now, I cannot download offline trail maps. I’m able to download the basic regions
- [R233] Doesn’t work on Apple Watch: I love this app on my phone but things kept happening to my phone while riding trails so I bought an Apple Watch only to find out it doesn’t work on the watch so I’m quite bummed ☹️
- [R548] Needs an Apple Watch app: Nice to have access to the all the trails but would be really handy to not have to put you phone out every couple minutes to see exactly where the trail entrances are. Don’t want to risk these $1000+ phones by trying to mount to handlebars.
- [R556] No watch app?: Great app for iPhone, but very disappointed that there is not an Apple Watch app, especially given the price.
- [R22] Useless without a paid subscription: I used the app for years and contributed to trail logs etc. When they started charging I thought, ok, paid for a subscription for a year. It wasn’t that worth it considering the information is crowdsourced and the app is never updated and buggy. It expired and I’m so disappointed with the free version. They make it totally useless. Can’t see any details and a p
- [R79] $$$$: They want way to much for this app
- [R43] Account hacked poor security: Don’t use this app my account was hacked and they will not delete the account even though it’s been inactive hurt several years . Poor app security and response
- [R47] 0 customer support: This is indeed my favorite mtb app out there, I've been using it for years. It's great, until you have a problem! Recently my app stopped working and saying "user has been deactivated" when I try to login. I have tried everything to login or reset my account, even tried to set up a new account which gave me a different error. I have reached out multiple times on 2 separate oc
- [R49] Waste of time: So for some reason this app randomly completely blocks you out. Won't let you login won't let you reset your password. If you contact customer service you're jumping through 1 million hoops. you can't even seeing anything without paying for the app. Don't waste your time
- [R68] Hard to use: I have a subscription yet I can never log in. I keeps saying I need a subscription, how can I address this?
- [R30] Doesn’t store activities: Constantly wants you to upgrade to pro. The basic app didn’t save my activities.
- [R32] Always records an activity any time I use it for maps: I just want to see the map, that’s it. I never want to record an activity through Trailforks. It wastes my battery if I forget to stop it. Super annoying
- [R20] Useless unless you pay…: This app is absolutely useless if you don’t pay for Pro…. Literally 95% of the app is locked behind a paywall. Just disgusting. You guys ever wonder why AllTrails has over a million downloads? Because you can actually SEE useful information WITHOUT having to pay! Plus the paid version is cheaper! Get a clue…
- [R27] I don’t want to pay for premium: Hard to use unless you pay for premium. The big banner blocking half the screen and not being able to information about a trail on the free version makes this app useless for anyone who doesn’t want the *fork* over $60 a year.
- [R249] Good, but…: …the annual price increase is lame. Same app, but more cost? Must be due to increases in shipping costs or tariffs? At least ease me in like a bullfrog to boiling water.
- [R75] App is unusable . Back button doesn’t work: I’ve tried closing all apps, reopening, reinstalling app. I’m using WiFi or good cell signal. App locks when I press back. I have to press every other thing in the app to try to regain functionality. For what people are spending this is not good. Mountain bike project works better and it’s free!
