Speak4Me Text to Speech Reader
Speak4Me is a highly useful text-to-speech app for those with speech difficulties, but the free version is severely hampered by intrusive ads and technical issues, making the paid version a necessity for reliable use.
Speak4Me is praised by users who need a text-to-speech solution due to medical conditions or for content creation, offering realistic voices and ease of use. However, the free version is plagued by frequent, disruptive ads and various technical bugs, which often push users towards considering a paid option.
Free vs paid
The free version provides basic text-to-speech functionality but is heavily interrupted by ads, sometimes playing during speech R13R36R43R44. Users report character limits R14R60 and a limited selection of voices R15. The paid version, or removing ads via in-app purchases, is implied to remove these interruptions and potentially unlock more features like voice options and export capabilities, though some users report issues even trying to purchase it R40R57.
Value complaints
- The free version has excessive and disruptive ads that play during speech, making it unusable for communication.R13R36R38R44
- Some users report character limits in the free version, making it unsuitable for reading longer texts or books.R14R60
- There are complaints about not being able to export audio even when expecting paid features, or having difficulty purchasing the pro version.R3R40R57
- The app is considered too expensive by some, especially when core features like French voices are paywalled.R51R53
Where it delivers
- The app is a 'godsend' for individuals with speech impediments or medical conditions preventing them from speaking, enabling crucial communication.R2R17R26R50
- Users appreciate the realistic voices and accents available, which enhance the communication experience.R26R32R59
- It is useful for educational purposes, such as listening to school books or for those who learn by hearing.R59R66
- The app is easy to use for basic text-to-speech functions.R32R46
It is worth paying if you rely on text-to-speech for communication due to a medical condition like a tracheotomy, vocal cord damage, or laryngitis, as the app can be a 'godsend' for daily communication R2R17R26R50. It is also worth paying if you use it for content creation and need to export audio without interruptions R3.
Skip paying if you are looking for a completely free, ad-free experience, as the free version's ads are extremely disruptive R13R34R38. Also, skip if you require advanced features like robust voice exporting or consistent performance, as many users report technical issues even with paid expectations R3R57R70.
Evidence note: Many positive reviews are short and lack detail, while negative reviews often highlight specific, recurring problems. The high lifetime rating seems to contradict the recent negative feedback regarding ads and technical issues, suggesting a decline in quality or an increase in monetization aggressiveness over time.

- [R13] Commercials that play: I have a 20 year student who had a tracheotomy as a youth so he now has very little use of his vocal cords and therefore speaks only a harsh whisper. He loves using his phone so we wanted to try this app out. Overall it’s great, but then while him trying to communicate, a commercial starts to play!!! That is totally wrong….it is interfering with his ability to communicate. I
- [R36] Ok but..: I lost my voice to severe laryngitis. So, I got this app to speak for me. It works fine, but the ads are every time you talk and it starts when you are trying to speak! I tried to limit or remove the ads, but it tells me it’s not compatible with my phone. 🤷🏼♀️
- [R38] Noisy adds interrupt my speech: Unusable. I’m deleting
- [R44] Talking ads during text to speech: I know there's a paid version without ads, but the fact that there are ads with people speaking that occasionally play over the text-to-speech is profoundly dumb.
- [R14] Like the rest: I downloaded this due to the high ratings and needed a quick text-to-voice like i have for free on my android device. I should have known better that there would be a character limit, wasting my time with the download and false hope of instant utilization since it was a free download. Things like this is why Android can be superior; no limits, free meaning free and not a pay wall.
- [R60] Meh: You can only read 300 words which is a scam. i’m here to read more not read for two minutes and then I can’t read. Don’t get the shop if you want to read physical books it’s horrible. Trust me. please add an unlimited set of words, so I can read better. It’s for my studies and all that.
- [R3] Can't export the voices: I love this app a lot , at first i was able to export them but now I can't... i don't know if this is part of the issue you're trying to fix but if not then i'm letting you know this is happening. Please fix soon !
- [R40] Great App, but how do I buy the pro version: WARNING: This is just my opinion. You might have another opinion, and that's cool, but this mine✌🏽 Ok, I really like this app, but I think it could be so much better with just a few additions. So with that said, I thought I'd try and see if the "PRO VERSION" is any better....come to find out that THERE IS NO PRO VERSION!!! Well that's the concl
- [R57] Doesn’t let me export audio: It keeps loading to 98% and then gets stuck. I need to be able to export them that’s what I’m paying for
- [R51] Not for the French: For all my French readers out there, this app is not for you. You literally have to pay for the voice to be in French.
- [R53] Disappointed: I taught the app was free and this is too expensive
- [R2] Helped with my trach: I had a trach placed and couldn’t speak for many days, and even when I started speaking sometimes I needed assistance communicating. This app was a godsend for me. I was able to easily and relatively quickly communicate with my nurses, doctors, care team and family far better than trying to write everything down. My nurses loved being able to communicate with me and me to be
- [R17] It’s just what I needed: This app is so very needed for people like me who have a really difficult time speaking, but since I’m not a mute I just suffered a traumatic brain injury and I’m not able to speak legible anymore so I find this app very very useful
- [R26] The most helpful app I didn’t know I needed this past month: I had vocal chord damage for the past month and once I found this app it helped me talk with my partner in the house and send voice messages to grandma. No more painful whispering or risking to talk and my chords finally started healing up. I LOVE how there are actually realistic voices on this one as well. Thank you for this! 10/10!
- [R50] really awesome app: hey this is an awesome app for me to get my words out that i can’t really do at certain times as i have a stuttering problem since i was a kid so it’s always been really annoying when i couldn’t speak when i wanted to but now i can it may be a different voice but at least i can say what i want now plus it’s free and that makes it just that much easier to use so i really love th
- [R32] I love this app: So i got this app because i saw it on those anime texting videos and then i saw that they had the United Kingdom voice and i was like oml yay cus it’s so hard to find but this app is very easy to use and they have really good voices.
- [R59] Wonderful app!: I was searching for an app to listen to my school books, fortunately I got this and it works perfectly, with amazing voices and accents. Thanks
- [R66] Speak4me: I LOVEEEE this new idea, this app has helped me so much with my school tests and whenever I’m overwhelmed with work. This is also great for those that learn things through hearing them
- [R46] Love it!!!: So easy to Use!
- [R34] Ads?: Okay, but seriously. Ads are literally every 5 seconds. We all know it’s for business, but seriously if you think putting ads every 5 seconds is going to keep us hooked youre mildly wrong. It’s just annoying and makes people want to stop using after a while.
- [R43] Works but annoying: It does what it is supposed to do adequately but it’s highly annoying in that the ads start in the middle of it reading your text out loud. So you have to repeat it. The voice is flat and annoying.
- [R15] Nearly spot on the vocally impaired.: For what it is, a utility, it’s just about perfect for someone incapable of speech, but hearing enabled. In this non-pro version, you are limited to a single voice. You can change the read-back speed, but that’s. Very robotic.
- [R20] I liked the app until…: So this app was great. It had all the voices I wanted, and I used it a lot. But then, a few weeks ago, I clicked on a voice after I had typed something. But it wouldn’t lode! I thought it was just a glitch so I tried a different voice. It didn’t work. So the moral, it won’t lode. This is a great app, I love it, but it just doesn’t lode. So I can’t use it. Please try and fix
- [R29] There's no button I see that can change voices.: Yeah so uhh I don't see any button or setting that can change the voice I wanted to set it to, and I can't really do anything with one voice, but you know, other then that good app, just think it would be better if I can change the voice.
- [R65] App Cannot Download Files!: My app has stopped being able to download the result from text-speech audio recordings. I waited over an hour multiple times, and it just kept loading with no known estimate time for them to be downloaded. This has to be fixed! I am very frustrated with this.
- [R70] There is one problem: It isn’t working anymore I downloaded the app add all of a sudden it completely stopped working I tried sending the voice audio to iMovie but it wouldn’t load I literally waiting an hour I deleted half of my apps please fix this problem please
