You should skip paying for VoiceMap if you are easily frustrated by technical glitches like GPS inaccuracies, audio skipping, or download failures R2R11R17R195. It's also not for you if you expect a truly free experience or are unwilling to deal with potential issues like being forced to start a tour from a specific location R4R6R23.
Evidence note: The reviews show a strong positive trend for the content and concept, but a consistent negative trend for technical reliability and pricing transparency. Recent reviews R195 are skewed negative due to these technical issues, while the lifetime rating remains high due to the overall positive sentiment for the tour content and value proposition.

- [R4] Bait and switch. Not free but advertised free: Absolutely terrible, zero stars. I consumed my data roaming to download their app after seeing their claim free.
- [R6] All tours need payment!: Advertised as lots of free tours. But all of what I saw are paid.
- [R23] Get Rick Steves: Every tour must be bought. Expensive. Get Rick Steves instead.
- [R453] I hate it when they don't make it clear stories need to be purchased: The 'Offers in-app purchases' section shows only fancy voices as in-app purchases. Then I install the app, and find myself needing to it each and every single tour. I mean, not a cumulative city tour, but each and every bloody 15mins one. Unless you do want to spend a lot, this app is useless. Will uninstall straightaway.
- [R25] What the heck does a Tour Pass mean?!: I've listened to a couple of these so far and they were both great. So I considered buying a 7-day Tour Pass. Except there's absolutely no way to figure out the value or return on a pass before buying it because all they tell you is you get a discount! Ok... Is it a 5% discount? 50% discount? Does my $25 investment pay for itself after one tour? After ten
- [R2] Super buggy and steals your money: The app is a great idea and the content is generally great. However the app itself is very buggy. Changing the speed of the narration creates overlapping audio, and it’s nearly impossible to allow a child to purchase a tour through a request to a parent because the download flow is interrupted. My kids ended up charging me multiple times for the same download and
- [R471] Ok tour, triple charged me: Tour was informative, a bit dull. Was $42 rather than $12.99 advertised in app.
- [R75] Confusing to purchase, in reliable in use: It was confusing to purchase ( I wound up paying twice). Tgen, when walking as directed, the GPS was unreliable, sometimes not keeping up with me, and other times repeating the description of the last place after instructing me to move along. I am really disappointed in this app. I purchased the Memphis version.
- [R464] Terrible app and no refund: Very bad no extensive guide and you can’t get a refund Update: In response to your respond be aware there is no refund. The developer said contact Apple and Apple said it’s not eligible for refund
- [R86] Thankful something like this exists: These are super cool and they are a phenomenal way to explore a city at your own pace. The price per tour is kind of high but I think there is value in what is offered. My only wish is that the tours had more cultural context. The history is there but it feels light on the details about why something mattered and the frame of reference it happened in. Why is
- [R1] Wonderful concept!: What a fantastic model! We often book tours when we travel but they are often expensive and we have to fit in the guide’s schedule. This is such a lovely concept.
- [R5] Great app for vacations!: I’ve been using this on vacations for about 4 years now and really enjoying it. Whether it’s the Coliseum in Rome, the loop in Chicago or Latin quarter in Barcelona, I always learn something new and interesting about the cities or areas we’re visiting. It’s a neat and inexpensive way to explore new places.
- [R13] Want to save some big bucks?: What an amazing idea for an app! Download this app for your own personal tour guide to hundreds of cities and towns around the world! We’ve used this app multiple times in Europe and have not been disappointed! Tired of the cattle car excursions offered by cruise ships? You know, the ones where someone or two from your group of 30+ gets lost, or stuck in the bathroom
- [R32] Affordable and everywhere: I do VoiceMap wherever I travel. I love it. One time I made the mistake of doing a group tour and it was three times as much And not very enjoyable. VoiceMap is great because I can go with my own pace. I always am able to understand the speaker because they’re in my ear. And if I want to stop at explore and see something and come back, I can. I could also do it at any ti
- [R3] Excellent app!: Have used the app for two audio tours in Poland. Excellent tech, depth of content and narration.
- [R7] Descriptive: An excellent way to be exposed to a new area.
- [R8] Visit SLO: First visit to San Luis Obispo and a this tour was a great introduction to such a culturally rich community. Looking forward to the next one
- [R12] Peaceful and Informative: My favorite sound in the natural world is flowing water in a stream. This audio tour was a perfect accompaniment to this peaceful walk along the falls and the stream. I highly recommend the tour.
- [R9] We’ve done 3 so far!: We’ve used the app in Austria and Hungary! It’s great! Easy to use and great tours!
- [R27] Easy and fun to use!: Loved my experience!
- [R28] Perfect: Berlin memorials and monuments guide. Cant think of any ways to improve either the narration or the app. As close to perfect as it gets.
- [R29] Love this app: Put your AirPods in, start the tour and put your your phone away. You’ll have a great time!
- [R19] Get this app: I don’t often write reviews, but I will this time in order to encourage others to get this app. I’ve used it multiple times and it’s like having your own tour guide in your ear. I’ve gone to some hidden gems that I didn’t know existed thanks to the various tours.
- [R31] Bangkok tour with Greg: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent tour! Highly recommend. This tour represents one of the reasons I moved to Bangkok #HiddenTreasures Are around every corner. Greg provides depth and context to historical and cultural places in the heart of the city, but are on the “path less traveled”. I have lived his story about getting lost in Bangkok and having ‘oh wow’ moments. Looking forward
- [R37] Great for a solo walkabout.: VoiceMap is the best way to explore a city. I frequently find myself in a new city flying solo- either because I am up too early or I have travelled by myself. This app has been a real boon to my solo travels. Informative and often off the beaten track, you get a real sense of adventure and gain new insight to wherever you are. I did do a group tour, because we all ha
- [R71] Great way to get to know a place: I’ve done Nashville, Boston and Charleston and they’re all great! I’ve seen places I never would have know about and it saves a ton of time researching where to go.
- [R11] Extremely disappointed: Downloaded San Gimignano Guide. Started in front of the church as required, and was never able to make it work from there. Directions sent me down wrong streets, I was never able to pick it up correctly, and a very annoying voice kept telling me “some people get lost in life.” I’m off to Siena tomorrow and will be downloading a different guide.
- [R17] Non functional: App buttons don’t do anything, can’t download any tours, and even the previews will freeze after playing for 5 seconds. Don’t waste your time or money
- [R195] GPS: GPS not syncing 100%
- [R24] Love it!: My wife and I have now done close to a dozen audio tours on VoiceMap and love it. We pretty much now always look to see if a tour is available in whatever location we are visiting. Most of ours have been in Europe, but we have also done one in Quebec city and two in Bangkok. Would highly recommend. I removed one star only because it seems like a lot of the tours we have done are no lon
- [R293] Tours are limited: Selective this app for a tour of Chester in the UK. Whilst the app is of good quality the available tours of Chester were disappointing. The best it could offer was a tour of ‘spooky’ locations around the city. This was not what I wanted but since there were no alternatives I reluctantly chose it. Disappointing; lets down what is otherwise a good app. Two stars.
