ButterflyMX
ButterflyMX offers convenient remote access and visitor management for buildings, but recent user reviews highlight persistent issues with app reliability, connectivity, and a lack of essential features, often making it more frustrating than helpful despite its high lifetime rating.
ButterflyMX is an access control app designed to open doors and manage visitor entry for residential and commercial buildings. While many users appreciate its convenience for remote access and guest management, a significant portion of recent reviews report frequent app malfunctions, connectivity problems, and missing features that hinder its core functionality.

Who it's for
This app is for residents of buildings that have installed the ButterflyMX access system, who value the convenience of remote door opening and visitor management from their smartphone R5R12. It is not for users who prioritize extreme reliability, a wide range of smart home integrations, or a minimalist approach to building access R9R23.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative, with a 38.8% recent-negative signal, contrasting sharply with the 4.85 lifetime rating. This indicates a significant downward trajectory in user satisfaction, likely due to accumulating bugs and unaddressed feedback over time . Many positive reviews are short and general, while negative reviews are detailed and specific about persistent problems.

- [R5] FANTASTIC: I can leave my keys behind… And I can let visitors and friends in the building without leaving my apartment🙌🏽
- [R12] Simple and Easy: Make access and entry simple and easy to use especially when we need to open doors remotely.
- [R13] Excellent App for Secure Access: I’ve had a great experience using ButterflyMX. The app is easy to use, reliable, and makes building access incredibly convenient. Being able to see visitors and grant access directly from my phone gives me peace of mind and saves a lot of time. The interface is clean, the video quality is good, and everything works smoothly. Highly recommended for anyone looking fo
- [R29] Amazing: Great addition for our apartment to be able to see and let our guests in.
- [R16] Easy and dependable: Super easy from the installation to everyday use with delivery, pin numbers and easily adjustable as tenants come and go
- [R26] T: Such an amazing app that is very easy to use.I would say its user friendly and it makes coming into my apartment so much easier
- [R28] Awesome: This application is very much user friendly. Absolutely, the best.
- [R7] Clear Video: Perfect system no flaws and never fails
- [R47] Good app: I like this app. It makes opening the door easy. I don’t have to look for my keys. I like that when someone delivers a package, there is a video so I can see who it is. The only thing that I don’t like is that the video doesn’t stay on long enough for me to see that the person left the building. That would be a much appreciated safety feature.
- [R76] I love this butterfly: This is really an outstanding product be able to let people end that you know you can actually see them, which is very important for me because I’m older now I love this. Thank you. Outstanding job.
- [R9] Terrible system with awful customer service.: The Butterly system is truly terrible. If you’re considering this for your building literally a padlock on the front door would be better. Concretely, the system is always down. We’ve had it for several months now and I almost never have an experience where it works on the first try. This week the whole system is down and the solution is to “use a pin”
- [R25] Always an issue: Constantly having issues with this App. cant wait until i move so i no longer need it.
- [R50] Not Dependable: My apartment complex has this service as the host of its entrance gates. The service has constantly down and up in the year and a half I’ve been here. You never know which gate to use and you ought to hope you don’t forget your key card because the app is not reliable, if you do you can very realistically be locked out of your complex. Something is wrong with their network, it has
- [R53] Lol: App works maybe 50% of the time - would not consider this a functional app. Reason I am not resigning my lease
- [R30] Better alternatives: Our building replaced the Carson system with this one. I preferred Carson. With butterfly you cannot see who is at the door unless they call your unit. And if you miss their call, there’s no way to check who it was and if they are still standing at the door. Additionally, the visitor pass doesn’t work for any of my visitors. They don’t receive any information on how to get in
- [R44] Delivery Pass feature is limiting.: It’s frustrating to have to manually create a delivery pass for every delivery and the PIN code that comes with the pass usually don’t work. I’ve verified the PIN code and tested it myself…
- [R92] Generated delivery code never works: I live in an apartment complex. I only use the app for two things. To open common area doors, and to create visitor/delivery codes. The app opens doors just fine but the codes NEVER work.
- [R105] Bug added in latest patch.: No longer sends a message to visitors for visitor pass to for the code. Idk why that fails now. When I order something typically it gets delivered in multiple deliveries with no option to get it delivered in one package. So delivery pass doesn’t work here as it’s a one time use. Would be great if we could specify how many uses. Otherwise need to get the visitor p
- [R41] Great but lacks features: I wish there was a way to view in the app what the status of my apartment door was whether it is currently locked or unlocked. The lock knows if it’s unlocked because when you tap it, it engages the lock mechanism to lock. Seems easy enough to share that status in the app.
- [R57] Needs MyQ integration: Works great but needs to be integrated with MyQ for Tesla. This would be awesome for opening the community gate automatically when we pull ainto our neighborhoods
- [R63] Needs Apple CarPlay: We use this app to open the security gate in our neighborhood. IMHO, it is absolutely necessary for this app to be accessible from the Apple CarPlay screen, but it’s not a feature yet. It would be much safer if I didn’t have to pick up my phone while I’m driving to open the gate. A quick couple of button clicks on CarPlay would be far superior and enhance safety and ease of us
- [R66] No Apple Watch Complication: Works fine, but you have to go through multiple steps to open app on Apple Watch. There is no Infograph complication support. Competitor, Latch, has this feature. Please add and I’d give this app 5 stars
- [R8] Obnoxiously loud: The visitor access alert repeats its long notification sound SIX TIMES. There is no way to change this. No other app I’ve ever had is this annoying and loud.
- [R22] Ouch: The noise it makes when it lets you into the building is too loud
- [R73] Notifications never leave: Dear god in heaven please let the notifications go away after I read a message. My building managers contact us all the time and it kills me.
- [R23] Most poorly designed app I’ve ever used.: I don’t even have time to get into it all but if you’ve ever used this app recently you know is the bane of your existence and the near worst part about living in an apartment. SMH. -100 stars if I could. BLEH
- [R42] New Feature Request: Add a favorite section to the tray. My building got so many door it difficult scrolling through to find the access that are relevant to me. Adding a favorite section makes life easier.
- [R51] Worst gate UI ever made: The app is fine, but I just had to type my code in at the gate because of a connection issue. Never in my life have I seen a worse UI to enter a gate code. Tiny buttons, you click enter code and it wants you to type an apartment number and then a code. Honestly this whole system solves a problem that never existed. Little button on a keychain and a 10 digit pad is superior
- [R58] Back Button Missing: In Visitors section there is no back button.
- [R231] Update broke it: I would give this 5 stars for the convenience but ever since the last update i can’t get into my building. I have to use the screen on the wall to have my girl buzz me in and hope she’s not busy at work. Really aggravating. Also, the pin has never worked so I’m forced to use a phone app that isn’t working. Though i believe that to be my apartment complex’s fault. Who knows
- [R232] Shortcuts/Widgets Stopped Working: Used to love this app but recently the ability to open the door via Siri/Shortcuts produces an error code quite often, plus using the Home Screen Widget often gives "failed. Use PIN instead."
- [R237] Update auto-logout!!!: I skipped a few updates fearing the app would no longer work. I risked updating to v1.104.1 and sure enough when I tried to use Butterfly to enter my building, I was logged out!!! I use non-memorable passwords, so I had to retrieve it to then login in the flooding atmospheric-bomb rain. Minus 2 stars for poor update.
- [R33] Can’t actually see who’s calling until you let them in.: I hate that I’m constantly getting calls to let people in because I’m at the top of the list, and because the picture of who is trying to get in is such poor quality and you can’t get a bigger image until you answer which lets them in. It’s a terrible liability, and on top of that I can’t do anything on my phone until the call is over so I’v
- [R131] Who was my visitor?: Since I am required to enter a name for a visitor pass, how about putting that name on the notification when the pass is used. That would be much more useful than a photo of the roof of someone’s vehicle.
- [R37] Irritated: How am I suppose to be able to let people in if the company continue to change the iOS version, I can’t update the app if my iOS version is different and I have to wait until it’s time for my iPhone to be updated again. The app shouldn’t require a new iOS version please fix it
- [R6] Fast and efficient: Works great. Works from a distance
- [R11] Door buzzer FTW: This has streamlined my life!
- [R31] What more could you ask?: Always works without a hitch.
- [R43] Love it!: Great app, easy to use and works every time.
- [R40] Easy to use: It only takes a second to figure out how to use it and then it is really easy to get a code for deliveries and to assign codes to guests. It’s really convenient, even for somebody in their 50s!!
- [R75] Great app- needs CarPlay app: Solid app, does exactly what it needs to with no issues ever. My apt complex uses it to control the gates to the parking garage- it would be incredibly convenient if I could add the app controls to my CarPlay do I never had to fumble with my phone!
