Duolingo
Duolingo remains a highly effective tool for language learning and other subjects, but recent updates have introduced significant monetization tactics and technical issues that frustrate many users, especially those on the free tier.
Duolingo is widely praised for its effectiveness in teaching languages, math, music, and chess, with many users reporting significant progress and increased confidence. However, recent changes, particularly the introduction of an 'energy' system and aggressive premium subscription prompts, have led to widespread frustration, limiting free usage and creating a less enjoyable experience.

Who it's for
Duolingo is for individuals looking for an accessible and gamified way to start learning new languages, math, music, or chess, especially those who can commit to consistent, short lessons R12R30. It's particularly good for beginners or those seeking to build basic vocabulary and discipline R9R10R45. It might not be ideal for users who prefer in-depth grammatical explanations, wish to learn without constant monetization pressure, or are easily frustrated by technical glitches and curriculum changes R4R7R11R25.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative, particularly regarding monetization and technical issues, which contrasts with the high lifetime rating. This suggests a recent negative trajectory in user experience. Evidence for specific technical glitches like microphone issues and streak problems is strong due to recurrence across multiple reviews.

- [R1] Increasing your intellect: This app is helping me learn Spanish
- [R5] So useful and helpful: I’ve been learning German and there’s a lot of things to help you. There’s the lessons and then there’s the speed game or whatever and I love all like the prizes you can get with the gems. I currently am using the free trial of super Duolingo and it helps so much. I’ve been begging my mom for it. This is your sign to go on Duolingo and learn more of your culture just like I
- [R9] Five stars: Duolingo is it the best app to learn different languages because if you’re new to it? and you constantly do Duolingo you start to become fluent in that language that you’re doing
- [R14] Helping me learn a lot!!!: Duolingo is great for helping me learn new languages! It got me fluent at German, and Portuguese. My family loves it and I do to!
- [R12] Wow: This is the best way to spend 5 mins of my time doing lessons for different languages or more time the more lessons you do! This is honestly such a great way to teach people new languages! Highly recommended from me!
- [R24] Great game: This is a great learning game and even though I’m 9 it suits me perfectly great game
- [R28] Very easy and simple to use: Makes learning new stuff very easy for people that are autistic and have other mental illnesses super easy for me to learn a little bit about Japanese and now I’m even playing chess because of this next I’m gonna learn music when I complete my chess course
- [R30] Love it!: Extremely helpful. Very easy to use. Fun to use! Even my young kids love it. Learn at your own pace. I highly recommend Duolingo!
- [R10] I am Learning: The App is Helping, and I am learning, and becoming more confident
- [R13] Duolingo review: Duolingo helps me learn Spanish and German. It is very helpful and makes me feel confident speaking other languages. The only thing I don’t like is it keeps bugging me to get super and max Duolingo and it’s one so expensive and once I already say no that means no don’t keep begging me! Other than that it’s great!
- [R51] Cool duo: It is really helpful for learning a lenguage and building discipline but I got upset when I won a tournament in diamond league but all I got was an emote
- [R53] Love it - for the whole family: First, love that the update added photos to some of the vocab words - add more and keep that up! I’ve been using Duolingo for years. The Plus added features are worth the cost, and have rapidly increased my understanding from vocab recognition to speakable. Worth it, to me. The owl, bear, Lilly, and others make the experience fun - with each one having a unique “att
- [R11] Battery life sucks: I used to love Duolingo but now they have a battery so you must rush through a lesson. Instead of being able to review and study, I have to hurry through. It takes a long time-hours for the battery to recharge. I understand they wanted your money, not really to help you learn a language.
- [R19] Limiting but good!: I pair Duolingo with actual practice speaking and it works well for me. My biggest gripe is this new battery/energy system limits how much I can practice which seems really counterproductive. Why can’t I keep practicing?? At least before I could earn a chance to practice more…
- [R25] Join super now!!: In moments between lessons, it shows you stats- “75% of learners that finish their course bought super!” While I don’t mind it, the app makes you buy ‘energy’ to actually learn every few seconds. With Ads While I do think Duolingo has helped me learn a few new words- though sometimes I forget them in my energy breaks (energy runs in 25’s, you have to watch one ad for every 5 ene
- [R27] Good: Duolingo is great for learning and developing skills. It’s really helped my French and to avoid scrolling. One star is off however because it’s frustrating to run out of energy during a lesson and there are ads. (Unless you buy super Duolingo)
- [R4] A once incredible idea that was monetized into ad-filled unrewarding garbage.: There has never been an update that has improved this app. Every single change just makes it harder and harder to want to keep using considering how hard they try to game you for your money. It used to be great.
- [R15] Streaks: I have a big problem..yesterday I know I played…after I played, my Duolingo widget showed that I played but I woke up today and a freeze was used..this isn’t the first time it has happened..I dunno if I’m the only one that goes through this but it’s really getting annoying…I can’t lose my streak 😭 I’m making my report again..two days ago, I played but a freeze was used yesterday.. yester
- [R47] Barely usable: After the latest update the app has become very slow and crashes without letting me complete a single lesson
- [R57] Why freeze strake: Why I did my lesson yesterday and it still gave me freeze why I did my lesson yesterday and it says I’m good to go and I freeze my strike is 115 but now it’s at 114
- [R58] My opinion: Duolingo has chess on this app and I come across it so I was trying to get off of the chess and it didn’t work so I tried again and again but still couldn’t work.
- [R3] Not fun: When I’m learning the words for a language it just shows you the word and you have to pick from 4 English words and expects you to just know it and you can get it wrong which in my opinion it makes it not fun. Also the words go by so fast and I used to get so many notifications saying I need to redo my streak because I lost it and it got so annoying I had to turn the notifications off, so
- [R7] Duo has gone Downhill: I started Duo full of enthusiasm. I have the Max plan. I paid the extra money bc I learned faster and more easily. Not anymore. My course is stuck on the same lessons repeated and Flashcard Frenzy has been using the same 10 words for 2+ weeks. That was a great learning tool to help me learn new words, get better at using them and think of them more quickly. Now it’s like thr
- [R45] Trash: It was way better when it first came. If you want to learn the basics it’s great. Anything after that, there are way better options. It’s not fun like the other reviews say anymore. A lot of ads. Expensive. Repetitive with the same phrases.
- [R77] “Updated curriculum”: They keep updating the courses- and now I’m completely lost. Sections I’ve never done are now considered complete- and ones I have done are now way later in the courses. This has made me want to not use this app at all. I’m trying to learn- we should be ASKED if we’d like to try a new track, or at least allow us to do sections we don’t know.
- [R6] Attention: This is a very helpful app. My only problem is that it supports gay and lesbian things which not all people agree with so to get a larger audience especially with more children you should exclude couples of women.
- [R104] Don’t let your kids play this: This is not for kids
- [R118] Energy, sexual content, DISGUSTING: I get to learn a new language, which is fun but every single time I answer a question my energy runs low and I have to wait an hour to only get five energies back and it’s 600 gems to refill the whole thing which runs out within three lessons. also, when you play the game in the café, or where you have to walk around or something they use words that I’ve never h
- [R124] Inappropriate: This app geared towards children should not be sexualized. Pushing an agenda on our children is sick. It is highly inappropriate to be celebrating sexuality in front of children. Disgusted.
- [R23] A little problem: I’m trying to get the account for my iPad but I forgot the password. When I press forgot password? I put in my email but then I would have no emails from Duolingo! Please help me as soon as possible! I’m leaving tom and I’m not gonna bring my iPad and I don’t wanna lose my streak so I was thinking of doing it on my phone since I’m gonna bring my phone. I have a 500+ streak and I
- [R16] Duolingo: It’s a great game it has math that you can learn, and you can learn all different types of languages and it fun
- [R59] Energy: The new energy update is absolutely terrible! The whole app is about learning a language but once you run out of the energy you have to quit the lesson and watch an ad if you don’t have gems. And watching the ad only gives you 5 energy?! A whole lesson takes like 15, hello??? I can’t even complete a lesson anymore bro. Bring back the hearts cmon.
- [R172] Go Back to Using Hearts Instead of Energy to do lessons: For people that can’t afford to pay to use the app you run out of energy really fast. I wish you would go back to heart rather then using energy cause it made it more worth while. I’ll get a good score on the lesson and only be able to finish one before I have to wait a majority of the day for my energy to fill back up. Kinda defeats the pur
- [R22] Amazing!: Duolingo is absolutely amazing! You can take lots of educating courses. Some people think of Duolingo as just a language app, but it’s much more. You can learn Chess, Math, Music, and more! Duolingo has ads, but they are easy to flick away quickly. In conclusion, definitely get Duolingo. Duo is waiting for you!
- [R42] Not free use friendly anymore: Idk when they changed it but now even if I get answers right they just take my tries away. Every time I open the app there’s an ad telling me to pay for their subscription. After every lesson the same ad.
- [R83] Microphone problems: When speaking the app is not translating what is said correctly and sometimes not translating to the target language.
- [R102] Music Lags: The Music lessons lag, particularly when playing songs, making it impossible to play correctly much less earn three stars.
