Unfortunately, even if you do pay for a few heroes, you can’t use them unless you have app purchases enabled which brings up the annoying pop-up urging you to buy all heroes. It’s incredibly annoying and feels very predatory.

You can get really into customizing how you build the towers and their power ups each one gets and how you utilize them with your hero. The microtransactions are very minimal and not required to win.
