iCollect Books
iCollect Books is a useful app for cataloging large book collections, but its value is significantly undermined by frequent bugs, data loss issues, and a confusing, expensive monetization model.
iCollect Books helps users track large book collections and avoid duplicate purchases, offering extensive editing options and a wishlist feature R2R4R5. However, many users report issues with scanning, data loss after updates or phone changes, and a paywall that limits free use to a small number of books, often leading to frustration and regret over purchases R1R8R14R26. The app's pricing structure is inconsistent and often criticized as too high for the buggy experience.
Free vs paid
The free version of iCollect Books allows users to add a very limited number of books, typically between 6 and 50, before requiring payment R8R11R14R16. The paid version, which can cost $9.99, $29.99, or even $30, is advertised to remove these limits and enable features like bulk scanning R6R8R12R14. However, some users who paid for the 'unlimited' option still encountered limits or were asked for more money R8. The paid version also offers more customization and sorting options, though some core sorting features like by author's last name are still missing R17R48R50R52.
Value complaints
- The app has a very low free book limit, typically 30 books, before requiring a payment of $29.99 or $30, which many users find excessive and not clearly stated upfront.R8R11R14R16
- Some users who paid for the 'unlimited' or 'full' version still encountered limits or were asked for more money, leading to dissatisfaction.R8R98
- The app's price is considered too high given its frequent bugs, crashes, and data loss issues, making the purchase feel like a scam to some.R26R35R55R65
- The desktop version is also expensive and reportedly does not sync reliably with the mobile app, making it a poor value.R149R330
- The pricing can be inconsistent, with different users reporting different paywall amounts ($6, $9.99, $10, $29.99, $30).R12R14R20R21
Where it delivers
- The app is effective at helping users keep track of their books and avoid buying duplicates, especially for large collections.R2R4R9R10
- It offers good organization features, including the ability to add photos of actual books, customize information, and create wishlists.R5R9R15R17
- The scanning feature can be fast and efficient for adding books, though it is prone to issues.R9R79R82R346
- Customer service has been responsive to some users' issues.R6R34
It is worth paying if you have a very large collection and are willing to tolerate significant bugs, potential data loss, and manual data entry, as the app can prevent duplicate purchases and help organize your library R4R6R9R12. It could also be useful for specific needs like tracking special editions or loaned books, provided you accept the app's limitations and potential frustrations R5R17.
Skip this app if you are not prepared to pay $10-$30 after adding a small number of books R14R20R21. You should also skip it if you require reliable data storage, as many users report losing their entire collections after updates, phone changes, or app crashes R26R27R28R32. Users who need accurate scanning, robust offline access, or specific sorting options like by author's last name should also look elsewhere due to reported issues R1R3R40R44.
Evidence note: The lifetime rating of 4.57 is significantly higher than recent reviews suggest, which are skewed negative due to frequent bugs, data loss, and paywall complaints. The monetization model is confusing, with varying reported paywall limits and prices.

- [R8] Nice app: This is a nice app but I wish it would have an unlimited option or let the purchaser know the number limits ahead of time. As a teacher I have many books and even after purchasing the supposed unlimited option was only able to put in 50 books and now asking for more money. Makes this teacher not very happy.
- [R11] Disappointed: Great app as long as you don’t have over 30 books. Free until 30. But 31+ will cost $29.99. That should be in description.
- [R14] Not free: You have to pay 29.99 to enter more than 30 books
- [R16] Only 30 books allowed for free: As of 7/19/24, the max allowed of books scanned in for free is 30. This is ridiculous, as anybody who is scanning ISBN’s to add to a list has a large quantity of books
- [R98] Good but could be better: You can only scan a certain number of books before being asked to upgrade. For $9.99 If someone else only partially entered a book it wants you to make changes like add the author before you can save it. The only way to make changes is to pay the upgrade fee. $9.99. I’ve only got 74 books in so far but when I got to about the 70 mark it gave me issues with each entry.
- [R26] Scam!: I purchased this app years ago to be able to add all my books. Then they get hacked, all my info in removed, and now I cant add more than 30 books because my account was wiped out and NOW they are asking for $30 to add my books! Its a complete scam! Its not my fault you guys were hacked! Do not get this app, they cant keep our information safe and then we have to pay more money for their mi
- [R35] Scam!!!!: The app won’t stay open and they won’t refund me!! Useless also i did not have this issue until I paid for it. The free version did not do it. SCAMM!!!!! If you ask me.
- [R55] Don’t Update if you already have: Don’t update if you have the app already. They got me on the music one and they wanted me to pay for it again. They actually did this a few years back too! Why aren’t they responding to peoples issues? They know what they’re doing is wrong! It’s a scam! Apple needs to do something about these scam apps.
- [R65] It was great until it crashed: I paid for the upgrade and it was great! I was looking at everything you could do in it and changed the theme color and it crashed. Now I can’t get it to open back up and I’ve scanned almost 400 books into it. I’m so mad I could cry. If I’m not able to get it to open again, I want a refund! I’m not paying $10 for an app that won’t open!
- [R149] Good (3.5) but....: The app engine is really good, and it is very helpful. You can scan the barcode of most books. I would rate it 5 stars if the app would has a better UX: searching for your own library is not easy after 200 Books. The desktop app is almost a robbery, paying 25 USD if you already paid for the iOS app.
- [R330] Don't get the desktop: It's great on the phone. When I go to the comic store or conventions I know what I have. I got the desktop version. It's suppose to link from my phone. It doesn't work for the book. Save your money.
- [R12] Very good but need to get full version: I love it! I share all my books with my mom and now we share an account where we can keep track of what books we have and whose house they are at! Yes it was $30 for the full version. But I’ve bought multiple copies of the same book only to find out it was at her house. One book=$30=worth it. Girl math!
- [R20] Costs $30: $30 to have more than 50. $30. Insane.
- [R21] $30: You can add 30 books for free, after that you ha to lay 30 bucks?
- [R2] Great for keeping track of books: I love this app for keeping track of my books because sometimes I forget which one I already have in a series and it’s nice to just be able to open my phone and be like ok I already have that one. Especially since I read a lot of manga. 🤣
- [R4] Multiple book purchases: I am so thrilled that I have this app on my phone. It has enabled me to almost completely stop me from buying multiple copies of the same book over the years. I say almost cause the times I buy the same book that I have is due to the fact that I don’t check my list before I purchase “said” book, but I’m getting better at remembering to check my list of books.
- [R9] The Best Digital Inventory System!!: The iCollect Suite of apps for the various types of items is the best way of quickly and efficiently cataloging a large collection. I have a large library of books, music, and games and all 3 apps let me quickly create and maintain an accurate database of all my collection for ease of reference wither its on the go when shopping and I want to make sure I don’t
- [R10] Wonderful App!: Absolutely Love it! I’m a huge collector, and the sort it apps are the best. I absolutely love them! They keep my various, huge, collections organized. If you are a collector sort it apps are a must have.
- [R5] Great for Special Editions: Was looking for something to track my books, especially special editions. This has found every book but so far. The amount of editing you can do is great too.
- [R15] Best I could find: I’ve got several thousand books that I’ve collected over the years. I had them in a database perhaps 20 years ago which crashed. It’s taken me thus long to get over that failure and get my collection organized. I reviewed multiple “best” lists for book collecting and this app was the best. What seemed unique was that I could add pictures of the actual book in the collection. For
- [R17] Love this app but there are some bugs: I love this app, I can take pictures of my books, organize them pretty much however I like, as well as change the organization easily. It helps me know exactly what I have, making it easy when I go book shopping what I have or need. There are a few annoying bugs in the app. Sometimes when I am putting in a new books info it changes to another book I have al
- [R79] Organize: Just started to use the app. I love that you can batch scan and that the scanner is fast. One thing I would like is if there was a way to add tags and somehow organize books into a bookshelf type folder. So I can figure what book is where in my house lol. And I could organize my manga from my regular books.
- [R82] Easy to use.: I haven’t explored all the features yet but I am finding it very convenient to use. I have finally started cataloging my large book collection because all I need to do is take pictures.
- [R346] Good, but could use improvement: Good barcode scanner, attractive interface. Really needs more customization options, though - a book's page has a huge number of data fields, most of which the average user wouldn't care about. It's good that they're available, but the user should be able to select which ones they see and in which order. Also, having the Personal information at the very bottom i
- [R6] Awesome app for large collections!: To tell you how much I love this app, let me start off by saying I don’t pay for apps. If it ain’t free, I don’t use them. But this one so impressed me after reaching my “free limit” of books that I decided to purchase the full version. And I have zero buyers’ remorse! And the one time a feature was added that was inconvenient, they responded quickly and chose t
- [R34] Great App: Love, love, love this app! I have over 500 books and this is a great app to load my library so I can have all the information at my fingertips. The founders of the app are very helpful and respond quickly to questions. Highly recommend this app.
- [R27] Data is Gone! No Warning!: I have used Books for years. It helped me avoid purchasing duplicate for me and as gifts for others. Now, my list is gone. I would give a rating of 0 stars if that was an option.
- [R28] All gone: Data didn’t transfer when i changed to a new phone, years worth of cataloging all gone.
- [R32] Not happy: Cannot see my collection or log in to the app to see the books i own and I’ve been using this for years 🤬
- [R1] Wrong the book showed up when I entered the ISBN: The very first book I scanned, came up with the correct cover for the book. I am scanning, the description is for the wrong book. I’m scanning a vintage sunset book called kingdoms for kids, but the description of the book that comes up is for a story, not a how to, something completely different. I don’t know if that’s because I’m scanning a vinta
- [R3] Meh.: The scanning is clunky, but you can add pretty much any information you want.
- [R40] Not reliable: I’ve really tried to like this app, but it seems fairly clueless in finding e-books which I use due to frequent travel. I usually have to put most of the info in myself which is pretty time-consuming. I am out of the country frequently and do not always have access to internet. My database only shows without a connection about 10% of the time - making it an useless resource then. W
- [R44] This app was better before it changed….: I miss the “Books” app. Now that it’s changed to iCollect, I can’t get my isbn code reader to work and upload new books. It’s so frustrating because my entire classroom book collection- over 600 books- are listed in here and now I feel like I can’t use it the way I used to.
- [R48] I used to love this app: I used to love this app and then sort it switched to this. It sorts by author’s first name and not last. It also counts books by multiple authors twice when I sort by author. I paid $10 for the original app not this. The main pictures make it seem like they think people sort books by the title which most people don’t since it would separate series
- [R50] Used sort it app for years, looking for another option now: I’ve used the sort it app for years & have now been forced to this app. I hate that it sorts authors by their first name. That’s pretty worthless if I’m in a bookstore which always sort by last names. My reason for having an app like this is to avoid buying duplicates. I just wanted a relatively easy way to catalogue my books. I have 100'
- [R52] Update ruined this app: I have been using these apps for my books, movies, and games. They have been wonderful. Then the update. Now I can't get all of my books to load there, the supposedly transfer them but not all of mine did. I have to ask to load them all. The sorting is a nightmare. I have it set to sort by author's name. Well, you can't have it last name first. Which is not good. There are
- [R293] Sort it book scanner: Nice app, would be good to sort books by author. Not linked to a database but to users inputs.
