Who it's for
This app is for Houstonians and Texans who want local news coverage, especially sports, and are willing to tolerate technical issues and a perceived liberal bias R8R12R14R28. It is not for users who prioritize unbiased reporting, seamless app performance, or easy subscription management R2R10R46R55.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative (0.536 recent-negative signal), particularly regarding app performance, content bias, and subscription issues. While some positive reviews praise local coverage, the volume and detail of negative feedback suggest these are widespread problems. The lifetime rating of 4.53699 indicates a positive trajectory overall, but the recent trend points to a decline in user satisfaction, possibly due to recent app updates or content shifts.

- [R8] Great Houston News: Great articles that are spot on for Houston!
- [R12] I like it: Great, convenient source of news.
- [R13] Support Local Journalism: I love being able to read all the interesting articles in the Houston Chronicle from my phone! The app is great very user-friendly and I love supporting local, honest journalism!
- [R28] Love the Houston Chronicle: I truly appreciate the quality and accuracy of the houston chronicle. I can rely on it for local houston news, weather updates and everything that matters in our town. The quality of the reporting is unmatched.
- [R14] Excellent: Enjoy the coverage, especially Sports and Kirk Bohls
- [R54] Too many liberal based slants.: I fire them every year after a few months. Even the business columnist can’t talk business without an attack at Conservatives. But the sports group is clean, speaking only of sports. Talented reporters. Relevent. Know their material. I end up missing them, and resubscribe. I was a print subscriber for 40+ years. I was paying money that I felt would was supporting
- [R58] Paper is Way to liberal: Love the sports but just cover it fairly
- [R79] Too liberally biased: Far too liberally biased so you know what you’re going to get before you even read the articles or opinions but given the leadership it’s a foregone conclusion. Business is better but shifting to the left. Sports are Good.
- [R23] Vetted Information.: Howdy, At 79 years I’m a creature of habit and appreciate the trustworthy, diverse reporting. Keep up the good work. NK
- [R25] Great Coverage: I enjoy, rely on, and regularly share news reporting from the Houston Chronicle. It provides objective, balanced, and unbiased reporting, including investigative reporting, on Houston and Texas not found elsewhere. I urge others to subscribe and support local news.
- [R44] The last paper: Value of local papers is that they are the only source of local news that has the budget and personnel for investigative reporting. TV gets it fast- Chronicle gets it right.
- [R71] Love your work: Long live free press and professional journalism in America. Keep up the good work and please don’t be afraid. Tell it like it is. We will support you. Thanks again. Robert Lange
- [R37] App no longer works: App quit working about 2 weeks ago. Deleted it and tried to reinstall it, but it won’t even reinstall on my I Pad. What the heck happened? I had been reading the Chronicle for years on my I Pad, now all of the sudden, those days are gone.
- [R42] Pathetic App for a major newspaper: It crashes, it crashes, it crashes. You may need to contact the HELP desk as the problems are many times Chron vs browser. Reading the printed paper is much more satisfying but when the newspaper boy sleeps in, the app is all that is available - unless it crashes - which it likely will at least 4 times. The app does have some redeeming features so it gets 2
- [R47] The App is unstable: I have subscribed to the Chronicle online for three years. The mobile app has been unstable for a while and very glitchy despite deleting and reinstalling it numerous times a week. The App freezes and even when it doesn’t and can scrolls down a page, the settings and icons at the bottom of the page are unresponsive unless I delete and reinstall all the app every time I want to
- [R70] E-edition won’t open: Despite complaining to chronicle support the e-edition will still not open on my iPhone 14!
- [R2] Terrible app: Not worth it. You are constantly challenged to log in. App is unusable.
- [R55] Dark mode: Y’all make it so hard to use your paper. I pay for your service. But it ALWAYS logs me out. On the app. On the website. I’m always logged out. I’m gonna stop paying because there is no point. Even when I am logged into your app, as a PAYING customer, I click on stories and they don’t load in the app, no that would be easy for your readers, they load in a browser and ask me to login AGAI
- [R72] Digital doesn’t work well…: I’ve had an account with the Houston Chronicle for many years. About five years ago I went digital only. I continue to have problems trying to open an article to read. It continues to tell me that I need to subscribe or sign in. When I sign in, I get the message that I need to subscribe or sign in. It is totally frustrating. Every now and then I can get to the site to a
- [R95] HC App: Even thought i have been a subscriber for years, every time i use the HC App I have to login anew. Very inefficient.
- [R1] Somewhat lacking and left leaning: Even though most newspapers are and have always been somewhat liberal, the Chronicle seems a little more than others. However, it seems they are becoming a little more balanced, even though the present administration gives them much ammunition to not be. Would like to see more international and national news reported beyond local Houston metroplex. A return to
- [R6] Biased Reporting Continues: I am amazed at the bias and unfair reporting particularly of political related articles. It really makes the Chronicle look like a joke.
- [R9] Too left leaning: I enjoy reading the local newspaper but it has become too left leaning. They need to report the news without their left winged views. In addition they need to quit having their opinion articles on the front page. Those belong in that designated section.
- [R10] Liberal propaganda: This rag first and for most promotes racism and hate! It pushes a leftist narrative and lies to its readers. As a customer of over 40 years, I have seen the shift from reporting the news factually, to now reporting it in a very heavy slant to the left. The editors, especially, should be removed. Then remove the racist columnist!!!
- [R5] Poor service: Cannot cancel in app
- [R26] Auto renew: It’s a racket. They continue to charge you even when you don’t have a card on file and then you get a call from a collection agency trying to collect and won’t cancel the subscription until you pay this balance you didn’t even approve
- [R30] Don’t subscribe: They keep charging me even after the account was cancelled
- [R34] Journalism but pricey: I got the subscription during Covid to track cases and now it’s all but useless to me. I’m not seeing much bias in articles or anything like that, but the local news and weather cover the stuff i need more than this paper does. I really want to cancel my subscription but it’s not easy and has been annoying me. For the difficulties in canceling my subscription and the lack of
- [R33] Reasonable but lacking some features: You can read the news and the print editions which is nice, but you can't save articles for later, and you can't gift articles as far as I can tell. I've been back and forth with support on this endless.
- [R39] Dated Content and no Font Control: The latest changes altered the font to a smaller size and you can’t change the font. What’s worse is the writing at the chronicle is shallow and frequently incomplete.
- [R69] A new disaster every day.: Today the articles started to load as web pages, with no way to adjust text size. If you’re 25, this is fine. If you need glasses, you’re not going to be able to read it. The comic issue I noted below - over six months ago - persists. The subscription is $10/month, and not worth that. Certainly not more. There are between 1-3 fresh stories in each of the news and edi
- [R93] Missing important functions: No ability to save, listen or share articles. WP and WSJ have these functions, you should too.
- [R4] Boo: The new format erases the look of reading an actual newspaper….not as convenient either
- [R7] New version is a step backward: Expanding the e edition blurs the content, so you have to select the specific item in order to keep it crisp. Previous version allowed expanding the page while retaining clarity
- [R35] A poorly designed app. A disservice to its journalists and readers.: Do you love clicking on an article and instead being forced to watch a pop up video of rotisserie chicken? I don’t mean an ad where it ends and then sends you to the article. No , it is just a video of rotisserie chicken that eventually ends in a still image. That article you clicked on? Forget it. Anything else? Let’s see
- [R38] Cumbersome Ad Feature: Great content. Cumbersome ad feature. It is too much to navigate to read with a natural flow. I am tired of sliding up and repositioning to get to the next section. I have cancelled the digital subscription.
- [R18] Hearst monopoly: Since Hearst owns almost every major newspaper in Texas they seem to want to use column inches to fill us in on out of Houston issues that don’t concern lots of fellow readers. Sports is especially true and they even go so far as large stories about the basketball Warriors. Who really cares about them? If you weren’t the only paper in Houston you wouldn’t have this subscriber.
- [R36] Old news recycled: The problem with this news app as with most is that they constantly push old news stories. Update 12/31/2025. The only source for local news, a shame. Chronically has great offers to lure you back in but the links don’t work for previous subscribers.
- [R48] Could be better.: It’s an e newspaper that doesn’t have the most up to date news. It’s a lazy way to run a newspaper.
- [R15] Hard to navigate: Awful app very hard to navigate
- [R24] Opinions: Hard to navigate
- [R76] Jesse: Subscription cost too much. I recommend $7 a month $5 for the chronicle
- [R17] Houston Chronicle: I am disgusted by the obviously one sided liberal agenda in the reporting. The Chronicle has lost any sense of fair reporting that the media was known for in the past. I’m very close to canceling my subscription. As soon as I find a good source of sports information I will probably do so.
- [R45] Leftist Rag: The Chronicle staff is 77% liberal and 100% insulated. It would rather run national anti Republican pieces than local news. The bias permeates the paper and Houstonians have mostly stopped subscribing.
- [R46] Thieves: The e-subscription cannot be cancelled without making a phone call during business hours. If you can sign people up online, you can let them cancel online too.
- [R56] Good luck canceling: Easy to sign up electronically but you cannot unsubscribe without calling, and the support hours are limited. If you do call after hours the automated message at the end of a menu quest tells you to manage your subscription online.
