Boxes alternatives
Boxes helps users track items within boxes and their locations, often for moving or home organization. However, some users seek alternatives due to manual data entry, app glitches, and limitations in the free version.
Why users look for alternatives to Boxes
- Manual data entry for items is slow, with no option to quickly add items by taking pictures or scanning barcodes.R1R27
- The free version is limited to 10 boxes, spaces, and images, which is insufficient for many users, especially during a move.R10R12R15
- Users experience issues with label printing, including incorrect formatting and difficulty with Avery labels.R7R9
- Some users reported losing data when trying to convert an anonymous account to a registered one.R13
- The app has experienced redesigns that made it difficult for users to find features and print labels, and some updates removed previous functionalities like label size settings.R4R7
- There is no option to access the photo library to add pictures after taking them, which is inconvenient in areas without internet access.R35
- Some users desire additional features like two-factor authentication for security, the ability to add dimensions and weights, or more printing options for manifests.R3R5R6

Head-to-head: Boxes vs NeighborYou should stick with Boxes if you need a dedicated app to meticulously catalog and track items within your own boxes and storage spaces, especially for moving or detailed home inventory . It's highly praised for its user-friendly interface, organizational capabilities, and responsive developer support R17R19R20. The app is particularly useful for printing manifests and QR code labels to easily identify box contents .
Evidence note: Public Storage, Extra Space Storage, Bounce, The Container Store, and Neighbor reviews primarily discuss the quality of their physical services or products and app functionality for managing those services, rather than direct comparisons to an inventory management app like Boxes.

- [R1] Boxes So slow: Unless I missed something you need to manually type the name of everything you enter into the database when you enter it. This is so slow. Similar apps let you just take pictures of items as you throw them in a box. Then you can go back and label them later. That is a much better system.
- [R27] Boxes Almost a 5: This app is simple but yet powerful. I really like all the features, but the only thing I wish it had was a barcode scanner to help automatically import in items versus having manually fill everything out.
- [R10] Boxes Disappointed: Great app but you only get ten boxes and then everything from there costs money. It’s silly. I just wanted a place to write down all the items. Deleted the app, I’ll just make a note in my phone.
- [R12] Boxes Good if you want to spend cash: Add the limits of the free version. Please respect our time. Free version limits: 10 boxes/spaces/images
- [R15] Boxes Only allowed 10 boxes: Great concept. It would be a nice if it alllowed for more than 10 boxes. Moving requires more boxes than the price of what this app would probably be worth. I could just use a notebook, spreadsheet, or qr scan labels. I liked this concept because it was faster.
- [R7] Boxes Update removed label size: It was great until the update. I am in the middle of packing and now I have to enter all the details of a label that used to be in the system. If I could enter the Avery template number I wouldn’t mind, but I have to manually put in all the measurements. Very frustrating.
- [R9] Boxes Labels Printing Disaster: The app is great. Very organized and easy to grasp, the label making process is a complete disaster. The Avery labels are great but formatting the printer didn’t work correctly, ended up buying 3 different Avery labels and they still would not print from the app correctly. Ultimately we used NFC tags and it was great. Very inconvenient with the labels, if you’re not a tec
- [R13] Boxes Lost all data when tried to convert account: Used it anonymously at first (with 8 categories and printed labels for 20+ boxes) and then changed my phone and when went back into app it worked if pressed to use anonymously again. I decided to save all the info and hoped converting the account would migrate the existing boxes to the new account but alas it just deleted all my boxes with no way to rec
- [R4] Boxes Unfortunate Redesign: I’ve always felt this app was one of the best apps available. I have not used it in a while and now discovered that it’s been extensively redesigned. I am unable to determine how to even print the label I need because there’s no instructions to understand how to use the features that they changed. Furthermore, not only do they want me to pay for using the app, they want to s
- [R35] Boxes No option to access your photo library: I WAS so excited about this app! I immediately headed to the storage room to re-organize my boxes, carefully taking pictures of the contents of each one. Because the storage room is sub-level with no Internet access, I could not utilize the app while I was down there. “No problem’l I thought, “I’ll just add the photos to my items when i can access the app ag
- [R3] Boxes Almost perfect: I love this app but I would like them to add two factor authentication to it for security purposes.
- [R5] Boxes Simple and helpful packing app: Does a really nice job with tracking both objects and boxes. I kind of wish it had an option to add dimensions and weights, but other than that it’s great!
- [R6] Boxes Good start: Overall this is a good app that lets you track the storage of items in boxes and those boxes in spaces. Most personal inventory apps only have spaces or rooms in which each item is assigned. I would buy the lifetime unlimited if there were more options in printing the manifest, that would include toggling to include listing all items and toggling to list item values/ quantities, and an
