Speak
Speak is praised for its effective conversational practice and rapid learning, often preferred over Duolingo, but it faces significant criticism for its aggressive paywall, high subscription costs, and inconsistent speech recognition, particularly for non-Spanish languages.
Speak by Speakeasy Labs is a language learning app that emphasizes speaking practice and real-life conversations, with many users reporting quick progress, especially in Spanish. However, a substantial number of recent reviews highlight issues with its subscription model, limited free content, and technical problems like unreliable speech recognition and slow performance.

Who it's for
Speak is for individuals who want to prioritize speaking practice and conversational fluency, especially those learning Spanish, and who are willing to pay for a premium subscription R5R12R65. It may be particularly beneficial for those who have struggled with other apps like Duolingo for actual speaking ability R75R22.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily towards negative sentiment, particularly regarding the paywall and subscription issues. This contrasts sharply with the lifetime rating of 4.83, suggesting a recent decline in user satisfaction due to changes in monetization or app performance. The sample provides strong evidence for both the app's effectiveness in learning and its significant drawbacks.

- [R1] Intelligent, interactive, intuitive!: They really break down language into bite-size lessons that you could apply to real life situations. You can adjust the level you start at comma in the beginning is not redundant if you already know a little bit of the language. Since each lesson is bite-size, you really only need to commit 10 to 15 minutes a day. Very manageable and easy to navigate!
- [R3] A “no sabo” adult take: I’m half Hispanic and my mom didn’t speak to us in Spanish. I had about 5 years of Spanish in grade school, went to Spain for a summer to try to learn, bought Rosetta Stone and used pimsluer. This has been filling in some major gaps on basic conversational Spanish and allowing me to practice.
- [R5] Perfect: So perfect so much easier then any other speaking apps this one i get to practice like i am talking to a real person and I have never been speaking Spanish any better! 😁
- [R12] So far so good: So far I’m loving it. Actually makes you speak sentences and think. I’ll give it another review if it changes. But I feel like I’m actually learning on this app.
- [R75] Great learning app: So far, I have learned how to form sentences better than the Duo app. I feel like I have picked up on Spanish way quicker than using Duo alone. My only complaint is that the speech recognition doesn’t pick up everything you say. For instance, tot can say or even tell the work correctly, and with the correct pronunciation, and the app doesn’t recognize it and counts it agains
- [R22] GREAT: Ahh I love this app I’ve learned so much in just two days!!! I wish I would have started this sooner. Duolingo didn’t really teach me much lol…
- [R30] SO FAR ITS AMAZING: WAY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER APP I HAVE TRIED SO FAR IT TEACHES CONVERSATION AND JUST MEMORIZING WORD
- [R25] Please add a family plan!!!: Would be so nice to be able to share with my husband! This app has been so beneficial for me learning Italian. I feel like I’ve had a much easier time with learning than duo.
- [R44] Best learning app: helps so much, I have adhd and they make the lesson perfect timing for my brain Love this app!
- [R49] Great for Spanish and maybe Korean: I use Speak as the baseline for self-teaching a new language. I love the instant feedback with speech and the hands-free review option so I can learn during my commute. One thing I’ve noticed was the speech recognition between different languages. It was great with Spanish. However, somewhat poor when using hands-free using my car’s audio. Korean seems to be po
- [R65] Natural Spanish Speech: I’ve been using Babel Spanish daily for a year but felt disappointed in my ability to actually speak. First, I added LanguTalk to my daily lessons but while a powerful AI app, it seems more targeted to the advanced intermediate. I love it but I recently added Speak to my learning routine and have been really impressed. Speak makes you practice speaking casual, day to day Sp
- [R2] Stick With Duolingo: First starting out, I enjoyed the app. I quickly realized that you couldn’t do anything else with the app unless you paid more the subscription. Duolingo does offer a paid plan, but you’re not forced to purchase in order to use the app like you have to with Speak. Save your money.
- [R85] Costs moneyyyyy!: The app started helpful until it wouldn’t let me move on without paying…. Was excited about it working better than Duolingo but I’d rather take longer to learn than to pay money unfortunately
- [R37] Review: Would have been an actual good app if it didnt cost money to get access to every lesson. Only 1 free lesson and then you have to pay for every other lesson. Might as well make the app cost money as a whole instead of it being free on the app store. Im not paying to speak words.
- [R113] Very good app but locked behind a paywall: The free trial was very helpful and nice but I found that because everything was immediately locked behind a paywall that I could not access the lessons.
- [R43] So expensive: I love the app, I just wish it was cheaper so it was more widely available
- [R63] Absolutely not worth it: It is not free. It is a very expensive subscription. They say they offer a free week but they don’t even do that, they stop you from being able to use the speak (voice) feature after one lesson. Then you have to upgrade to an even higher subscription. Not even worth the trial. Seems like an interesting method but I guess we’ll have to wait for a more reasonable app to find
- [R69] They are extremely deceptive with the bill: It indicates you can pay monthly so if you pick one it will charge you the full year which is false advertisement
- [R76] Don’t uninstall: Do not get this app I didn’t have a subscription and all of a sudden it said I did and it took $90.50 from my account ima sue
- [R14] Bad text to speech: It’s really hard to use for long periods because the text to speech / speech recognition is so bad, particularly for Asian languages. I find myself sitting there repeating myself incessantly because the speech isn’t detecting.
- [R18] Voice doesn’t work: Tried everything
- [R80] Not worth it: 1. Pay Wall… 2. It’s not very intuitive… I honestly can’t tell why my microphone wasn’t working but it sucked (yes I checked that it has access and it worked fine for the initial setup). Too expensive for what it is.
- [R4] Russian language support: It's a good app, but I'm waiting for Russian language support. · translated
- [R103] Please add dutch!!: This app looks amazing from what ive seen, but im interesting in learning the dutch language and it broke my heart not seeing an option on your app. 💔
- [R40] No Arabic language!!!: Very disappointing, i was excited to use this app , but there is no Arabic language support, Arabic is my native language and its difficult to learn through an app that doesn’t offer instructions or explanations in Arabic. Please add Arabic support
- [R51] Limited: I’m sure it’s great but the AI doesn’t offer enough language. I wanted to learn Eastern European languages and it has no options.
- [R46] AI change: It was much better before they switch everything to AI, I would not have paid for a year subscription if I knew they were going to solely use AI . The native speakers sounded so much better but now it’s too robot for authentic sounding words and it really only understands if you say the things back with the robotic tone. Super disappointing.
- [R19] No structure: It’s very random. No tools or techniques other than speaking it to make sure memorization induces. There is no intro or peak into lessons.
- [R92] Don’t put too much trust in AI, ever: I’ve had my fill of tech companies trying to push AI into every single facet of life, but at least for language I expected, oh I don’t know, A LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL would be able to help facilitate my French learning. I can’t believe I paid so much money for a year’s subscription just to experience such mediocre lessons and conversational ability. AI’s nowhere
- [R96] Kinda Weird Practice Experience…: “After running, I like to consume oral rehydration solution” definitely gives more AI vibes than people vibes when practicing “real world” conversation scenarios.
- [R6] The 'skip' button appears too late after the update, which is frustrating: When reviewing, I want to skip the easy parts and listen to the later content, but I have to listen to sentences like 'I'm hungry.' completely before the skip button appears. Then, after skipping, I have to listen to the next sentence completely before the skip button appears again. It's very inefficient to have to wait multiple times just to get to the later parts. I wish skipping could be easier, like it used to be. · translated
- [R10] Please add background functionality: Each time I start the lesson then switch over to Waze maps, the lesson cuts out. I’m having to use ChatGPT to practice Spanish whilst driving. I do enjoy this app but commuting really is the best time for me to get some learning in without distractions. Having ADHD, I get distracted so easily when I’m not on the move.
- [R111] Good So Far: So far it’s good but there is so much “fluff” I don’t need her speaking in French while I’m learning Spanish and then saying “oops I teach more languages” also having to click “next” or “ok” after every single word is annoying. Just automatically go to the next one so I can practice while doing other tasks.
- [R116] Everything is good, but: The server in the Canada region is too slow. Sometimes I have to wait several minutes just to watch one video lecture, and tens of seconds to load a response for a single sentence. The content is truly rich and useful, but the terrible server makes me want to close the app even when I've come here to study. I would appreciate it if you could fix this quickly. · translated
- [R48] only 1 free lesson: you only get 1 lesson then you gotta pay i guess.
- [R50] just a cash grab: you literally only get ONE lesson for free and have to pay to pretty much use the whole app. I expected an option where u can pay to have no adds, unlimited content etc, but the only way we can learn a different language is to pay for it entirely?? lame asf. Id rate 0 stars if I could
- [R149] Regarding the AI tutor's free role-play function: While it's true my pronunciation isn't perfect, there are many parts that aren't recognized even after I say them multiple times and try to correct them. I would appreciate it if you could add an option to type out the answer when speech recognition fails about three times during a conversation. It also seems to struggle with longer sentences and needs improvement. · translated
