Who it's for
This app is for Houston area drivers who prioritize getting an overview of traffic incidents and construction, and who specifically want access to traffic cameras R9R25. It is NOT for users who require highly reliable, real-time, and accurate traffic data, or who expect a modern, intuitive user interface R4R7R23R27.
Evidence note: The recent reviews skew heavily negative (60.6% negative), which contrasts sharply with the lifetime rating of 4.8 from over 2000 ratings. This suggests a significant negative trajectory in user experience following recent updates. The developer's notes mention 'bug fixes,' but recent reviews directly contradict this, reporting new and persistent bugs, crashes, and connection issues R7R10R21R31.

- [R1] Short Travelled: Helps me get around Houston
- [R2] Vital: On my way to work with a coffee and senior citizen. I can’t afford to get stick in traffic.
- [R5] Great: Definitely a must have if you travel regularly in Houston. From traffic accidents to floods and freezes, it keeps you informed of what’s going on out on the roads.
- [R25] An absolute MUST HAVE if you drive in Houston!: This is a reliable way to get an overview of traffic delays all over Houston. They post incidents almost immediately after they happen (not always the case with other navigation apps), and they inform you which lanes are affected. App makes it easy to check the incident & construction maps before you leave for your destination so you can quickly plan
- [R9] Boop the snoot: If you’re looking for traffic cameras this is your stop
- [R3] New Look: I like the new design. Need to get the web based map upgraded!
- [R10] No connection: This app says it can’t establish a connection anthem tells me to check my (fully wi-do and also cell data) connection. Closing and reopening the app did not fix the problem. Truly useless.
- [R19] Doesn’t work: When you need it the most. Roads flooding and app can’t connect.
- [R20] Lost connection alert: Application keeps sending continuous alert about application not being able to connect to Trastar.
- [R21] Worked one day: This app worked for one day yesterday. Today it keeps saying can’t read a connection and keeps trying to blame my Internet. My Internet is working fine and it only seems to be this app not getting a connection. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and all the regular troubleshooting and nothing worked. Shame, this could be a really helpful tool if it worked
- [R8] Road closed: 7/22/2024 Beltway 8 southbound "ROAD CLOSED"! The news reported correctly, but not TranStar! They show green with NO report of "all southbound lanes closed". Closed for months. TranStar is a joke!
- [R13] Date and time not updated: It’s not in real time because it’s still showing me information for January
- [R14] Embedded Weather: Embedded weather forecast hasn’t updated from mid-Jan, though I’ve used apps many times since. Update icon doesn’t bring up any more recent info.
- [R22] No road closures posted for 290!: 290 Northwest Freeway East bound road closure due to construction Sat June 1st. Why is this not posted on the app???? I’ve been sitting in traffic for way too long. If this app served its purpose I would have jumped on 99. What’s the point of using this, very unreliable.
- [R6] The previous was much better.: This app doesn’t have the rain map, I don’t like this at all.
- [R11] Bring the old version back!: I’ve deleted and re-installed the new version and it is not anywhere near as good as the older version
- [R7] Latest update is unusable: Latest update has made app unusable. It immediately requests two permissions but the graphics are so jacked up I can only click on one. I have also noticed the previous version no longer had information for most of the roads I use.
- [R16] Dark mode issues: You can't read incident details if your phone is set to dark mode. They appear as white text on a mostly white background.
- [R17] Portrait to Landscape: This app is as detailed as you want to make it w/one exception. It doesn’t change from portrait to landscape when you change the angle of your phone. That is a problem. Please correct this feature
- [R27] need redesign UI: Wonder why Apple would allow this amateur app in the App Store. The user interface looks horrible, confusing and amateur. Back to the drawing board👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 btw, additionally to new UI. It needs to support iPhone X
- [R31] Freezes up: This app freezes up too much!!! I downloaded the app to monitor the storm but it keeps freezing.. waste of time!!!!
- [R33] Crash: Constantly crashing!
- [R32] No live traffic cams....: ...what's the point? A still frame image?....lame
- [R4] Not Reliable: 100% reliability
- [R23] Consistently Inaccurate: I have used this app and Waze for the last few years here in Houston and have found that Waze provides a generally accurate description of traffic conditions (as well as options to avoid), the Houston TranStar app is more usually inaccurate, generally underestimating the degree of traffic congestion. Frustratingly, as newer versions of the app are rolled out, reliability
