Head to head
you prefer a free app focused solely on mountain biking and are willing to tolerate instability.
you want a more robust and reliable app for various outdoor activities, including biking and running, and don't mind paying for premium features.
Evidence note: The evidence is somewhat one-sided, as MTB Project's reviews heavily skew negative due to recent stability issues, while Komoot has a more balanced mix of positive and negative feedback.

- [R9] MTB Project Needs One Feature For Me: MTB Project is a good app for mountain bikers but it misses out on one key feature I need. There is no field for eMTB. A huge number of single track and some double track in my state (Oregon) is off limits to eMTB. Bummer, because we respect the trails and other users. MTB Project offers nothing helpful to eMTB riders.
- [R56] MTB Project Incredible resource to find trails wherever you are: Search with the map feature, dig deeper with reviews, difficulty ratings, and elevation profiles. So useful for discovering and planning rides. And then link to maps for directions to trailhead. Excellent app, full featured and easy to use.
- [R67] komoot Blatant greed: The fact that Komoot requires a subscription to push routes to a Garmin device is absolutely abhorrent. I have no interest in paying $5 monthly or $60 annually for that feature. I’m perfectly willing to pay a reasonable one-time fee of $30, but locking basic functionality like route syncing behind a subscription is nothing short of blatant greed. I’m exhausted by the endless subscri
- [R113] komoot Best Route Planner.: I’ve been using komoot for years now and it’s been nothing but awesome. Great routes, smooth navigation, seamless integration with garmin and Apple, and most of all intuitive customization interface for all kinds of routes. Love it!
- [R10] MTB Project Nothing but crashes: Used the app for years with no issue, but using it with low service now and it continuously crashes. Very disappointing and makes the app completely unusable. Also please update your UI for Liquid Glass, the app looks terrible
- [R40] MTB Project Crashes ALL THE TIME: There are no words for how much rage this app gives me now. It crashes constantly. I’ve been using it for 4 years and have never had this problem. Whoever made these unstable changes should be fired immediately. I look forward to someone duplicating this exact app but without the crashing. I will switch in a heartbeat
- [R82] komoot Complicated app: Frustrating experience overall. The app is not intuitive, whether you're on the trail trying to navigate in real time or sitting at home with plenty of time to figure it out, it's unnecessarily complicated. For what you actually get, the price feels hard to justify. Wouldn't recommend it.
- [R117] komoot Too many changes!: Komoot was my “go to” route planner, however since the recent changes it has become very difficult, complicated to plan a route from your phone, when previously it was straightforward. The old saying applies, “don’t change what isn’t broken”!
- [R19] MTB Project Always crashes: I really want to like this app, but no matter what I do, whether it’s zooming out to look at maps, or search trails, the app always crashes. Worth noting I’m on a new iPhone 17 Pro
- [R43] MTB Project Crashes constantly - literally unusable: Honestly if the crashes in the app aren’t fixed I think Apple should remove this from the App Store. I was on a ride yesterday, pinned the ride before I left, and literally couldn’t use the app. Fortunately I had a backup map application, but this is a legitimate liability. If someone had this downloaded and was planning to rely on it and it malfunctioned l
- [R72] komoot Use cautiously: Most of the routes do not contain any user reviews or comments about the route. Not sure how routes are put together, but from my experience about half of them, include roads or areas that are dangerous or difficult to ride on. Have odd navigation, as if someone was trying to create a route and went a variety of different places. The curated routes seem to be much better. They a
- [R2] MTB Project Amazing App: Made by the same creators of Hiking Project, this is an amazing app. No big companies asking for their $30 premium for the most basic of features. No ads, only just pure trails and community help. Please let me marry these developers.
- [R77] komoot Great for planning routes: I’ve used the free version of the app for a few years now and it is super useful for planning out runs and bike rides. The recent update to the route planning software has fixed a few annoying parts about the app and the experience is great now! The new route planner is quick and easy to use.
- [R118] komoot Pay only - forced auto renew: This app forces you into a monthly or yearly subscription to even look at what the app could provide. Is it interesting? Sure looks it. But I have to take the risk of an auto-bill. That’s a hard no for the sample.
- [R36] MTB Project MTB Project used to great, but since OnX bought it, it seems to crash all the time.: I used to really enjoy MTB Project, but lately It seems to crashes all the time.
- [R45] MTB Project Used to be reliable: I’ve used this app since it came out and appreciate the downloadable maps with good info. It’s been getting some updates lately that have made it appear to have a paywall or require an account with another company, and it crashes so often that I can’t even use it. Bummer, but I suppose you get what you pay for.
- [R107] komoot Only Getting Better: I’ve used Komoot for at least three years now, and the app is only getting better. There are thousands of options for hikes within an hour of my home, with plenty of details and search options to find “that perfect hike”.
