TaxSlayer vs TaxCaddy
TaxSlayer is generally preferred for direct tax filing due to its ease of use and affordability, while TaxCaddy is better suited for users who work with a CPA and need a document organization platform.
TaxSlayer offers a straightforward and affordable tax filing experience for many users, though some report issues with pricing transparency and app functionality. TaxCaddy, while praised for its organizational features when working with an accountant, is frequently criticized for its buggy performance and unintuitive interface.
Head to head
you are looking for an affordable, generally straightforward platform to file your taxes directly, especially if you have a simple return or are comfortable navigating potential app glitches by using the website R5R8.
you work with a CPA and need a dedicated platform to organize and upload your tax documents, and are willing to tolerate a potentially buggy interface for the convenience of centralizing information for your accountant .
Evidence note: TaxCaddy's reviews are heavily skewed towards its functionality as a document portal for CPAs rather than a direct tax filing tool, making direct comparisons on features like tax calculation and filing less applicable. Many TaxSlayer reviews mention price increases and unexpected charges, which could be attributed to users qualifying for different tiers of service than initially expected.

- [R8] TaxSlayer The New Turbo Tax: Set up identically to turbo tax, but 1/5 the cost. Will be using them moving forward!
- [R9] TaxSlayer Ehh: The process was fairly easy and it was quick to use. But it doesn’t offer any of the options that other services do and that’s kind of annoying.
- [R31] TaxSlayer Didn’t let me import a picture of w2: I used to use TurboTax because it was free but they aren’t free anymore. I picked tax slayer because it said I could file for free but that was only for federal. I also had to manually input all of my forms where TurboTax lets you take a picture and it inputs everything for you. I would have just paid them if I knew I was going to have to pay anyways.
- [R45] TaxSlayer Tax returns: Great app just wish I could take a pic of my tax return and upload would make it much easier
- [R1] TaxSlayer Can I say I’d rather clean toilets all day than do taxes: Forget about trying to access or print your taxes! Logged in 20 times App just trying to EXTRACT MY OWN INFORMATION!Guess you better just plan to get your own transcript from the IRS!
- [R5] TaxSlayer Great App: So straightforward. Especially for a first-time user. Thank you
- [R6] TaxSlayer Malfunction: There is something wrong with the app it won’t let me type anything update how come I can’t download my tax return to look at it
- [R10] TaxSlayer Hard to navigate: Could not download or print returns for this year or previous years. Could not review return. Hope everything turns out ok You can’t go to a specified line , like line 20 on 1040. Wtf
- [R12] TaxSlayer File: I use TaxSlayer every year. But my complaint is I can never just download or print my documents. It just circles, no matter what device I’m on and then I have to close out app and log in again. Over and over with the same result.
- [R3] TaxSlayer Payment: I think $46.00 payment for a state return especially where I get zero money money back from the state and I’m 100% Disabled, I think is HORRIBLE!!!!!
- [R4] TaxSlayer Automatically Upcharged me: Charged me $140 dollars after I chose the $0 option does not make any sense and the customer service was no help in tracing the funds ! Not recommended
- [R7] TaxSlayer tried charging me 150$ for state taxes: just tried again and its still over priced, the other app im using now costs 55$... it costs more than the actual taxes costs
- [R44] TaxSlayer Additional help: The 20$ for additional help was well worth it. They answered my questions within 20 minutes.
- [R46] TaxSlayer DO NOT USE: Do not use. Customer service is a joke and they tell you to use a web browser instead.
- [R55] TaxSlayer Zero Customer Service: I have had 4 experiences with Taxpayers customer service. The first phone call I terminated after the girl who answered was hard to hear. I was nice, she became sarcastic. I cannot reset my password. Two emails unanswered. Lesson learned, Turbo Tax was awesome My taxes were not filed because of a matching soc security issue. Did research and others are having the same issue.
- [R22] TaxSlayer Free offer very misleading 😡: Took time to fill out every form, ready to file. Read through the “free” tier requirements carefully before I began. Ready to file, expecting it to be free only to be required to pay $71 total for Fed+State. Vague explanation that one of my tax credits requires the Classic package. But I didn’t even have credits reported and it wouldn’t specify what exactly was the is
- [R30] TaxSlayer Tax Filing: I chose to do my own taxes. I entered everything on my own without any help but I’m still charged $178 to file my taxes. The only reason I used Tax Slayer this year is because I didn’t want to deal with a new company and have to enter all my information all over again. Convenience cost me $180… :-(
- [R64] TaxCaddy Awful Software: My financial advisor wants me to use this but so far it’s unusable. I can’t find a major institution like fidelity and the autofill passwords function doesn’t work. Very frustrating.
- [R67] TaxCaddy Won’t work with MFA: The automatic download feature won’t work due to MFA. Also you can’t upload documents directly from financial institutions. The documents must be externally downloaded then uploaded to TaxCaddy.
- [R99] TaxCaddy Smart link malfunction annoying: Quite a powerful app in many ways, but amazingly annoying this year because Wells Fargo smart link feature seems to fail and need reset almost daily in order to stay active for automatic upload of tax information from my financial institution. Whether this is a WellsFargo or a TaxCaddy problem, this bug detracts significantly from the app experience.
- [R102] TaxCaddy Smart Links not so smart: For the second year now Smart Links is not working. How can a fix take this long?
