Storm Shield vs Storm Radar
Storm Shield, despite recent price increases and some reliability issues, is generally preferred for its accurate and timely severe weather alerts, while Storm Radar suffers from significant recent negative updates that have impacted its usability and accuracy.
Storm Shield and Storm Radar both offer weather tracking, but recent updates have significantly impacted user satisfaction. Storm Shield users praise its alert accuracy and effectiveness, though many are frustrated by steep price hikes and occasional alert glitches. Storm Radar, on the other hand, has seen a decline in usability and accuracy following recent updates, leading many long-time users to cancel subscriptions.
Head to head
You prioritize reliable and timely severe weather alerts, especially spoken notifications, and are willing to tolerate recent price increases and occasional alert glitches R2R11.
You are looking for an app with detailed weather information, including future radar forecasts (though some report this feature is now missing), and are hoping for a return to its previous, highly-rated functionality .
Evidence note: Both apps have a significant number of recent negative reviews, particularly concerning price increases and a decline in quality after updates or changes in ownership. This skews recent sentiment lower than their lifetime ratings. The free-vs-paid asymmetry is less pronounced as both offer free tiers with IAP, and much of the negativity stems from paying users dissatisfied with changes to their subscriptions.

- [R2] Storm Shield Accurate and Effective Weather App: I’ve been a subscriber of this app for several years and keep being more impressed over the years. I was in Canada visiting my BFF and was able to track the weather while I was there. This is in another country and still, of course, captures the accuracy of the weather of where I live in the USA - very impressive!
- [R6] Storm Shield Pins Other Areas: I like the radar and temperature features as well as storm warnings. But other places show up as pinned I don't care about. I don't know how they got pinned or how to get rid of them. I'm sure every time I delete it and start over I'm charged for it.
- [R11] Storm Shield Good notifications: I can’t believe Storm Shield has text to speech when a notification pops up. I’m really loving it. Thank you.
- [R14] Storm Shield Go to!: This is the weather answer; I have all our children’s towns in there. I open up this app and know what it happening all over! The best!
- [R26] Storm Shield Great radar: I love your radar and weather warnings. I live in a remote location and your website is invaluable. In
- [R35] Storm Shield Nice to consult: We get a lot of weather information in this very stormphobic area. It’s nice to be able to get a quick visual update without details from multiple states.
- [R1] Storm Shield Terrible: The app never lets you know when severe weather events are coming or other severe weather events will happen.
- [R4] Storm Shield Not as good: This app used to be really good, but I’m getting alerts and when I click nothing is there. It’s also not updating while I’m traveling, even though I refresh.
- [R8] Storm Shield Used to be better: I have used Storm Shield for many, many years. Lately its quality has gone downhill. I get other notices about severe weather in my saved areas, but when I open up my saved locations on StormShield, it is not showing the NWS alerts, even though my saved setting is well within the "polygon" that Storm Shield is supposed to be covering for me. Today, I tried to send a Support requ
- [R7] Storm Shield Do Not Download - Money Hungry Developers: I have been a loyal customer since the app launched. It was my favorite and the best for future radar watches. It helped with Tornado tracking in my area and having the ability to warn my local family. This App has increased its fees from yearly to monthly to weekly at ridiculous levels, especially in a time where everything else is ridiculously expens
- [R15] Storm Shield Not the same: The local weather forecast for the tv channel I chose used to be part of this app. The streaming forecast has not been available in this app for months. The cost of the app is much too high to not have all the features promised. Why not fix this? Not inclined to keep paying for a broken app.
- [R22] Storm Shield Price Increase is too much,: Latest price increase to over $11 a month is too much. It adds uo to more than $120 year. After almost a decade, I am cancelling my subscription. I will miss you but this is too much.
- [R27] Storm Shield Slow to alert and major price jump: I am finding the app is slow to alert compared to other weather apps but more than 2 to 5 minutes. Canceled the subscription due to major price jump of the service since the delay of the alerts. Per email received the before price increase was to make the app better but that has not been the case.
- [R37] Storm Shield Can't Restore Subscription: A family member has a subscription for the app and even though family sharing is enabled on both their devices and mine, Storm Shield errors out and doesn't allow me to restore the subscription.
- [R63] Storm Radar Apple Watch Ultra 2 issues: This was a fantastic app for current conditions as well as local radar. In the past week or so I’ve been unable to see current condition conditions on my Apple Watch Ultra 2. It seems that the radar function itself still works if you tap on the appropriate complication field. I’m hoping that notifications of impending rain are still functioning. Support has been notifi
- [R112] Storm Radar Something changed: The app stopped providing 2 hour before and 6 hour after radar. I can also not report the problem due to page freezing when I click on”report problem” This is the pay version
- [R34] Storm Shield Price increase: This app is not worth $11.49 a month. What are you doing?
- [R50] Storm Shield $12 is Insane: I’ve used this app for years even back when it was $.99. I cringed at $6 but you’ve lost your mind thinking I’m paying that much for an app that has no significant updates.
- [R62] Storm Radar The best weather app: This is the best weather app! It’s accurate, gives warnings, temperatures in our area and shows the radar. We appreciate the app!
- [R64] Storm Radar Works half the time: How can you ask someone to pay money for an app that only works half the time. Most of the time I open the app is shows rain even when there is no rain.
- [R68] Storm Radar Works great for traveling.: I have used this app since 2019 and find the paid version is amazing in accuracy in predicting what weather is coming, not only from where but to where it going and how fast. It is my favorite weather app, and I used to be a “live on-air storm chaser.
- [R82] Storm Radar Inaccurate at Best: Whatever it tells you in terms of radar and predictions seems to be right about 5-10% of the time. Not worth the money, this app panders to useful idiots. Apple Weather is just as accurate and they just make things up entirely. Best advice these days; look at the sky and if you smell rain its going to rain.
- [R61] Storm Radar Old Lady: I enjoyed the simplicity of the old version. Maybe you guys can add a tutorial video somewhere on here, to help navigate the “busy-ness”
- [R66] Storm Radar Lots of potential: This app has potential to be one of the best iOS weather apps but it’s held back by severe performance issues. On an M4 iPad Pro and on an iPhone 17 Pro the app is a stuttering mess.
- [R72] Storm Radar New format is terrible: I’ve had the paid version of this app for years. I liked it because of how user friendly it was. This new update is hard to navigate and glitches often. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my subscription. I don’t want to pay for something I can’t reliably use.
- [R76] Storm Radar Used to work well: This app used to be great. With the update a few months ago it is now very slow to load the actual radar image, sometimes not loading at all.
